Historical Traveller Reviews of Riu Monica Hotel

Great relaxing holiday

from Hawklord
Nerja is a the most scenic resort in the Costa del Sol great for a relaxing holiday. Good beaches , pleasant centre , and varied nightlife to cater for most adult tastes. However not for those who want party atmosphere shopping and Brits abroad culture. Also good location for those who want to drive as roads not to busy and near to Sierra Nevada mountains.
A hotel in great location next to good beach and ten minutes walk from Balcon de Europa. The staff in the hotel are very frindly and maid service is excellent. Only criticism is the food although in general to a good standard was rather plain .
Most of guest 50+ so if younger need to find entertainment elsewhere as catered mainly for the above .
Overall the package deal I got from Thomsons was value for money and the hotel met with my expectations based on the reviews I had read .

A Bit disappointed after reading earlier reviews

from Katieb01
My husband & I have just returned from 2 weels in the Monica. The food was disappointing - dry steak/ ckicken & virtually the same for the whole 2 weeks. As previously stated the entertainment is not good & so no surprises there. The staff were lovely & rooms cleaned daily. We originally were given a room overlooking the kitchen roof but were able to change the next day, which meant that we were living out of a suitcase for the first day. Other guests also had the same experience. Pool was small & freezing whatever the time of day - although the sea was even colder!!
We were surprised at the ages categories at the hotel- we are young 47 year olds & it felt more like a saga holiday!!

Nerja a bit of a let down too - full of restaurants / bars but not many decent trinket shops to look around

Overall a nice break but we wouldn't go back.

Excellent Hotel, Friendly Staff

from MagsRoma
Excellent friendly staff. Everything requested was done immediately, even to asking for BBC to be tuned in on TV, done immediately.
Gardens and pool excellent. Beds not allowed to be reserved before 9am, unfortunately no one takes any notice, but not hotels fault. Gardens are quiet, pool noiser.
Buffet food of the highest quality, and we have visited many hotels before.
The entertainment is it's let down, very mediocre, but as the hotel is in such a good position this does not matter much. You can take a walk to the 'Balcony of Europe' where there is so much to see all the evening. Livings statues, artists, dancers, music etc etc. Shops galore, plenty to see and do. Many resturants.
But then you can go back to the hotel and find peace again. An oasis within a manic town.

The Riu Monica IS an excellent hotel

from sunsetskies
We had the pleasure of staying in the Riu Monica for the last 2 weeks in July and cant praise it enough.

It was our second trip to the Monica in 3 years and we have to admit that on our earlier trip the hotel bedrooms were looking very 'tired' and in need of updating. At that time it was the only thing we could fault about the hotel.
Since then the Monica has undergone a refurbishment program and the rooms are now very nice, bright, well equipped rooms. There is also the added bonus of a new indoor swimming pool and gym.
As said in previous posts, the staff at the Monica are superb. They are extremely friendly, efficient and eager to please at all times.
We booked the Monica as a last minute deal this time around and because of this we knew the rooms we were getting only had a limited sea view. We commented on the view to the reception staff who immediately gave us a choice of another room with a better view, but they then went further by telling us that if we could wait 2 days we would have even more to chose from as it was a main change over day. This resulted in us being handed numerous keys for rooms on different floors so we could decide which one we preferred!
I've noticed in the previous posts that someone said the air-conditioning system was poor and controlled by reception. I cant speak for all rooms but in our case all the rooms we were in (4 in total, including the changeover to a new room) had individually controlled air-conditioning systems. These units worked excellently, we actually found that it was a bit chilly leaving it on all night and found the ceiling fan more than adequate, we both cant stand being hot - and we're talking night time temperatures that were around 28c. The units meant we never had to have the balcony doors open so no worries of mossies. The only time the unit went off automatically was if we opened the balcony door but it came on again immediately they were shut. One other point, if you were in a room that had a centrally operated unit and you were suffering that much with the heat and were offered a change of room I would've thought that the 'hassle' of changing rooms would be worth it. In our case reception offered to move all our stuff for us any way as in their words 'you are on holiday'.

The other comments I cant quite believe are about the food. Both choice and presentation are excellent. I'm a plain eater but my husband likes to try different foods every night and never found the food repetitive, it most certainly is not average. You could chose to eat either healthily or be a bit indulgent as there was something to suit everyone. This was true for both
breakfast and dinner.

Its true that the Monica doesnt allow inflatables in the pool although you are allowed to play ball games. They just try to keep a lid on anything getting too rowdy or noisy. I know this rule isnt to everyones taste, but for us personally, we go on holiday to relax and this helps us acheive that. If you want to use inflatables then a 'superfamily' hotel would probably be a better choice. There were plenty of kids there though that were having a great time. In any case you only have to walk beyond the pool area and the beach is literally on the other side of the wall to it.

Entertainment is the only slight downside to the Monica but this tends to be true of a lot of hotels. The bar/entertainment area is certainly not like a social club. There were good evenings while we were there, the Flamenco shows are very good, a quiz night was also a laugh and the best night was a Stevie Wonder tribute, he was superb. There were nights where the 'singers' left a lot to be desired but it did give us a laugh - wonder what Simon would say on the X Factor! Another point is that the Monica now operates a non-smoking policy, you dont get that in many social clubs!

Most people chose to go out to Nerja for the evening anyway though as it is alive with atmosphere at night. There are no clubs but lots of restaurants, bars, stalls and entertainment.
Its only a few minutes walk into the main area of Nerja and this is a blessing in disguise as you can return to the peace and quiet of your hotel after spending your evening among the hustle and bustle of Nerja. The area around the Balcon is really busy and I wouldnt want to stay at the Balcon De Europa for this reason.

Nerja itself is still very Spanish and a lot of the guests in the Monica were Spanish families. Again I think this is a good recommendation for the Monica if the locals chose to go there.

In conclusion, maybe the Monica hasnt got the facilities of some of the newer hotels but it has wonderful staff who ensure that everything runs like clockwork and that guests are made to feel special. Many guests there are repeat visitors and people who have travelled a lot and experienced many different hotels, but they all say the same that its the personal touch that makes the Monica stand out from bigger, more modern hotels. We cant wait to go again and many 'new' visitors we spoke to felt the same.

Not all as perfect as the reviews lead us to believe

from twoadultsoneteen
Having just returned from spending a week at the Monica,I think there area few things you ought to take into account before staying here.
Yes the staff are excellent--some of the friendliest and most efficient I have ever known in Spain. Yes the hotel is clean and in good condition and whilst our room was a very good size and well equipped, the air conditioning was virtually non existent which led to 7 very uncomfortable days/nights. they sent the engineer to fix it, he tinkered for a day and kept waving his arms around, but it didn't make any difference, it was still hot hot hot!!!
Reception told us that they had no other complaints about our room -131- but agreed it was not as good as in other rooms and blamed it on ours being a larger 3 bedded room, (excellent size). they offered us a change of room on the 4th day, but it was too much hassle as we were only there for 7 days. YOU SHOULD NOTE THAT THE MANAGEMENT CONTROL THE A/C AND TURN IT OFF AT MIDNIGHT SUGGESTING YOU USE YOUR CEILING FAN, THIS MAKES SLEEPING VERY DIFFICULT AND IS NOT WHAT A 4 STAR HOTEL SHOULD BE DOING.

The pool area is pleasant and reserving of sunbeds before 9am isn't permiited, However there's always the families of 'Brits' who insist on giving us all a bad name, and breaking the rules by putting towels out early. One family of 3 had put towels on beds plus a chair and 2 parasols and didn't use them until 4pm!! They did this every day. This is bad practise. Also inflatables are not allowed in the pool.

The proximity to the beach is very good and the beach has a lifeguard service and is clean. The pool bar is very good for lunch and again the staff here are excellent and very friendly.

The hotel lacks a decent place to sit out in the evening and all the entertainment is indoors. This wasn't our scene, it was more like a social club in my opinion.

We had booked half board but only ate there on 1st night as it's the usual buffet style, serve yourself food, which was average, it depends what you want.

There are some good restaurants in Nerja which you really should try. El Puglillia-not sure if thats the correct spelling, is one. From the front it looks like a hot, smokey, locals Tapas bar. Be brave, go in and go through to the enormous terrace at the back which serves the most fantastic FRESH fish. The staff, mainly young girls, are amusing with their really bad attitude and poor service skills, it's fun rather than annoying- a good experience. Visit Le Redondas on Calle Gloria which is a good basic Tapas Bar, plus you get a free Sangria Jug when you leave.

All in all we had a most enjoyable stay and really liked Nerja. The most impressive thing about the hotel is the efficiency and friendliness of it's staff.

Excellent Hotel

from Galdana
Stayed at the hotel in June for 11 nights. Having stayed at other Riu hotels this one keeps up the standard. Helpful and friendly staff, good food- lots of choice.

Very high standards, management highly visible-very open to suggestions.

My only complaint was the room- no view and at the side of the hotel. As soon as I entered the room I was unhappy and went back to reception to complain. The following day I was offered a choice of rooms with a sea view. However, several other people we talked to had also complained and been offered alternatives.

Its a short walk to the town with a good range of shops, bars etc. Hotel is also in great location for the Tuesday market.

Hotel has its own car park outside with a larger one at the side- costs 4 euros a day- only problem was that some people parked across the entrance !!

Enjoyed our stay at the hotel but we prefer the Islands- where the building is much less; too many developments going on.

Excellent hotel, will definitely return

from The_Vincents
Myself, my 3 year old daughter and my husband, have just returned from a week's stay at the Riu Monica hotel. It proved to be a great choice, with very friendly and helpful staff, good food, clean well managed pool areas etc.

Breakfast and dinner are buffet service, but offer a great choice of different dishes - there is something for everyone. The hotel take their standards very seriously and the manager even came round to our table one night to ask whether everything to do with our stay was ok. He mentioned that if we ever required anything different for dinner, for us or our daughter, then we only had to ask - a great touch I think. We didn't have to ask for anything though as the Riu had thought of everything. The hotel is spotlessly clean and well run. It's location is superb - only a short walk from the main Balcon in the town along with it's shops, restuarants etc.

There is also a pool side snack bar offering light meals - plus you have direct accress to the little promendae outsdie the back of the hotel, where there are more restuarants, plus Torrecilla beach to stroll along.

The whole experience at the Riu Monica was excellent - this was our first stay at a Riu hotel, and we shall defnitely be trying more of them in the future, as well as visiting this hotel again.

Wonderful Hotel and Resort

from A TripAdvisor Member
I recently stayed for 1 week in the Riu Monica Hotel in mid May, and would have no hesitation in thoroughly recommending it to anyone. It is classed as a 4 star hotel but the service is more like a 5 star, but at the same time being such a friendly and relaxed place.
All the staff throughout the hotel were extremely helpful, friendly and efficient. The restaurant food was faultless, and the bar prices very reasonable. All in all a very enjoyable experience which I will be repeating, hopefully for two weeks next time.
This was my first visit to Nerja, and I was very impressed indeed. Still mainly a traditional Spanish town with little lanes and alleyways at every turn, almost all containing an array of wonderful small bars, shops and restaurants, with the Balco De Europa the focal point - the place to be on a weekend early evening. A lovely place to enjoy a cappuccino ( £1.10 ) and soak up the atmosphere before seeking out on of the many bars. I will certainly be back, probably spending part of the holiday self catering as there are so many wonderful looking restaurants which seem too good not to give them a try.

Loved the Riu Monica!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Me and my mum visited the Riu Monica in May-June 2005
When we first got there we were amazed with the grand entrance and the marble staircases, we were so glad we were staying there and couldn't wait to spend our week there. Unfotunately the manager said they had over booked and that we would have to stay in a neighboring hotel 'The Balcon' We were distraught as the Riu Monioca looked so good.We would not recommend the Balcon if you are looking for a lying by the pool kind of holiday, as the pool was tiny and our room was so hot we had to permenantly have the door open. The next day we decided to go back to the Riu Monica to see if we could get a room, the staff there were very nice and managed to get us a room there. This experience did not put us off hte Riu Monica because the staff were EXCELLENT the pool was warm and the sunloungers beside them got alot of sun, so it was perfect for tanning. There were activities on in the day for adults and children like ping pong and darts which were very entertining. The hotel was very luxurious and had a very good feel about it, with all the marble. The restaraunt was great with a wide selections of food. The staff in the restaraunt were as good as the reception staff, they were very helpful and the waiters were friendly. As you walked into the restaraunt, the chefs would all be standing there in a row welcoming you which waas lovely. The beach opposite the hotel was great and we went there most days.We would definately recommend this hotel, don't be put off witht he over booking because i am sure this doesn't happen too often. We would definately return to this fabulous hotel and i give it 10/10 for everything.
thanks xx

Great stay in 2005

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed for 10 nights July/August 2005, booked direct with hotel which was easy and saved money. Actually had a great stay and staff were friendly and helpful.Tried to do same again in January 2006 (for August 2006) after seeing rates advertised on internet for 79.30 euros per night per person half board. Riu Monica replied to say that the rates on the net did not apply to UK residents!!!!! The rate would therefore be 110.00 euros per night. Did we book? Dont think so. How can they justify this massive difference in price to UK residents. Beware and check the rates.

Top Local Tips for Nerja

Driving from Malaga airport to Nerja It's an easy motorway drive from Malaga airport to Nerja. But just make sure you anticipate the A-7 E-15 slip-road in the middle of Malaga where it separates from the A-45. Traffic can be queued back onto the main carriageway.

taxi travel Make use of local taxis if less mobile

Weather Not quite as warm as we expected/hoped but better than February in UK. A bit chageable but when the sun was out it was nicely warm
