Never Againfrom dontgothereUk
Dont do it! Far from a 4 star!from LondonSmiths
The food was the same every day with long queues and really targeted towards the mainly german clientele - you get the feeling the staff are not interested in having any English speaking guests at the resort.
Another big problem was the lack of soundproofing in the rooms which was so bad that we could hear the couple and their child whispering in the next suite. We regret not spending a little more and going to a proper hotel .
There was often no hot water in the evenings for a shower. So my wife frequently had to wash her hair with cold water and was not too happy!
There is only one English channel on tv which is a news channel - the others are mostly in German and if you are looking for a double bed forget it! All the rooms have two single beds without fitted sheets.
So basically if you want to feel alienated and unwelcome in a resort with overcooked oily food which you may have to queue for 30 minutes each evening and where the staff are very unhelpfull go for this resort ! Otherwise spend a little more money and stay in one of the many nicer hotels nearer the beach.
terrible foodfrom hdmorgan13
grounds well maintained
queueing for a fried egg which were being cooked in 8 little frying pans. queueing for a piece of pork while you wait for a slow chef to carve.
watered down drinks.
by the 2nd week mainly ate and drank outside hotel.
No change here thenfrom androcles
This is a great place if you are a family with young kids. They will have a great time make no mistake. The all inclusive option is worth every penny if you are a family. However I do not think the all inclusive option is worth it if you are a couple. It tends to tie you to the hotel and I am afraid the quality of food and drinks is poor. I mean how watered down can you make a gin and tonic?
Rooms are comfortable. Grounds are well kept. Its a short walk to the beach. The Dunas Suites is most definitely NOT four star. Three is being generous.
The worst aspect of the Dunas Suites is the restaurant. Its a case of find a table and then join the mayhem to get some food. You have to queue up to get hot food and the queues can get quite long. The food in hot trays is luke warm and so by the time you get it back to your table it has gone cold.
The food is low quality and tasteless. Its mass catering for an all inclusive market and they are not going to give you quality. Its ok for families but as a mature couple we want better food and service, not this free for all. Sorry but dispite what other say its poor. On a number of occasions I did not eat because i could not face queueing up for something cold and unappealing.
Entertainment in the evening at the Dunas Suites is simply boring beyond belief. If I see one more Parrott show.........!
In summary go to the Dunas Suites if you are a family with kids but if you are a couple who seek peace and quiet away from screaming children and a reasonable standard of accomodation, food and entertainment then think again......
Fabulous Relaxing Family Holidayfrom spaghettiScotland
Great childrens entertainment team, really genuine and making kids very comfortable. Mini disco every night at 830 pleased our kids no end with regular outside entertainers including ballet/flamenco dancers and magician.
We were half board and upgraded on our second day to all inclusive, due to the consumption of fluids we were all needing. For 2 adults and 3 kids was only 45 Euro a day which was great value.
Very clean surrounding with pleasant staff eager to please. Only downside was food got a bit boring into our second week but that was probably just as well due to our expanding waistlines.
We will definately book for next year in one of their other hotels in the canary islands. We would highly recommend this for a family destination.
Superbly laid out Complexfrom CarlossWarwick
We, family of three, have just returned (4th June 07) from the Dunas Suites having been there for a week and what we can only describe as very relaxing and pleasant.
The complex is of a low rise composition, all accommadation being that of a bungalow arrangement, set in superb gardens and divided into two sections compromising of the Dunas Suites - 4 star and the Dunas Villas - 3 star superior, the latter having the facilty for self catering and an on site supermarket
The majority of clientele were German and Dutch to which we found to be friendly and pleasant
We stayed in the Dunas Suites (senior suite) on an all inclusive basis. Our Bungalow, as with all, was well within reach of the facilties the hotel had to offer. The Dunas Suites offer either a senior or junior suite, the senior - accommadates up to 6 people - 5 comfortably, compromising of two bedrooms sleeping two per room, bathroom and living area with pull out settee bed if required ample wardrobe space, all rooms are spacious
The junior suite accommadates up to four people and only has one bedroom sleeping two, having spoken with other guest we would recommend the senior suite for the extra room and space it has to offer
Rooms are meticulously cleaned daily and the bath towels are replaced every day. Rooms are well maintained, however we thought for a 4 star rating the Dunas Suites would serve its rating better if the accommadation including a coffee / tea facilty in the rooms
The complex has five pools, one large, two medium and two small, again cleaned daily and kept to a high standard. The two main pools - one in each complex (Dunas Suites and Dunas Villas) have pool side bars where snacks / lunch is served. There is an abundance of sun beds and there is no need to be awake at the crack of dawn to reserve your beds. Pool side towels are provided for a small deposit and fee. The poolside bar attendants were always friendly and you were not kept waiting. One point worth noting was in four of the pools there is a walk in gradual slope as well as steps into the water which we thought was excellant for very young children, elderly and disabled
There is a small gym - mainly free weights and not too much in the way of apparatus, but enough for the average gym attender
The Dunas Suite restaurant is spacious well lit and offered a good range of breakfast - full english / continental. Waiters we found to be friendly and polite. Lunch and Evening meal was again good but rather repetative. In the evening your table is designated / reserved for your party alone and you could choose to have the early or late sitting, negative side to this was what ever you chose you remained with, on saying that the head waiter was friendly and would accommadate your needs.
Entertainment, good for very young children very poor for adults, however you must note that Maspalopas generally does not cater for lively night life - a short taxi ride (6 Euro) takes you into the heart of Playas del Ingles where there is an abundance of entertainment
Reception area - we found to be friendly, polite, clean and impressive upon arrival
All inclusive - read the terms that offers all inclusive - the bar in reception is not covered by the all inclusive and of the two pool side bars only one offers lunch /snacks on the all inclusive basis - alternative is to use the main restaraunts
Aminities outside the hotel - beach and Maspolmas sand dunes are a pleasant 10 minute walk - the hotel offers a courtesy bus which will take you there and back
In general , the Dunas Suites offer a good standard of accommadation - clean and tidy wherever you go in the complex, however we believe the Dunas Suites are more akin to a rating of a very good 3 star superior.
Would we go back - main holiday no - short chill out break for a week definitely yes
lovely place to stayfrom gillkay
Out and about we went to Faro 2 for an evening but it was really quiet albeit a couple of good english bars with sky sports on, the majority of the time we walked into melonaras and their choice of restaurants and bars is really good. I recommend a night out at the casino near the gran hotel costa melonaras. Its free to go in (you need to take your passports), the drinks are really cheap (encouraging you to bet more money eh!) and we had a good couple of hours in their playing poker and roulette.
Overall I would go back again to this hotel, it does have 4 stars but I would say its a good 3 star hotel. If you want luxury stay in one of the 4 5 star hotels in melonaras near the lighthouse but if you want a good quality, friendly, clean hotel then I recommend staying here.
Great Locationfrom Iona_Maisie
Pools clean but large one was a bit cold for small children.
Downside All inclusive food good but a bit repetitive. Dinning in evening always managed our large party at one table every night.
Nice for a family holiday. Would go back again.
Check your exact site !!from RAYHUM
The site is large but not crowded and about 10 mins walk from an enormous beach with shops, 15mins from a large shopping complex.
The site and rooms are very clean and tidy, staff are confident and polite and most understand English. The clients are mainly German, many of who speak English. My wife and I went all inclusive. The food was extensive and varied and good quality. Steaks, veal, salmon, tuna, English breakfast, cold meats and cheeses etc. There were themed nights, Chineese, Spainish etc.We couldn't fault it. Drinks are available (AI) at lunch and dinner, coffee/tea at breakfast.
There are 5 swimming pools across the site. Four are heated and very warm. there are bars at 2. I never queued for drinks at any of the bars. Overall, an excellent place to stay
s talk about the right hotelfrom teake
I have to admit that we mixed up the names too, when we made our bookings. Even the travel agency wasn't able to tell us in which part of the compound our bungalow was located. But now, after having been there, it is all clear. There are two resorts adjacent to each other (the Maspalomas Esplendido hotel not taken into account). Think of a 4 leaf clover. The top-left leaf is the "Maspalomas Dunas" hotel, the top-right leaf contains the bungalows (villas) - and the bottom right the suites of the "Dunas Suites & Villas Resort" (the bottom left leaf is the Esplendido). The three leafs in question used to be (before November 2006) one single resort named "Dunas Suite Hotel Maspalomas & Dunas Maspalomas Villas" ..... aaaagggghhhhh .. are you still with me?
Google earth will make it all clear if you can find it (I'll be happy to send the coordinates ... firstname.lastname@example.org)
IWe, couple 56 / 54 year, Dutch, living in France, working in Switzerland, stayed for 14 days in one of the Dunas villas (top right leaf) in November, 2006. We rented a car from Orlando for those 14 days, for 360 Euro. That turned out considerably cheaper than the offers that were made at the hotel (500+ Euro). The only catch was that after we arrived at the airport (7:00 pm) we had to be taken to a location some 12 km further on where we got the keys of the car. It wasn't the distance, but the extra time we had to wait (1h) for the employee to bring us to the Orlando office. The car, Toyota Yaris, was new (6000 km) and even large enough for me (1.90m).
We had no problems to find Maspalomas in the dark and the area where the hotel should have been. Of course, we entered the reception of the top left leaf where it was explained to us that we had to check in for that other hotel, at the bottom right leaf.
Anyway, check-in was quick and flexible. I asked for a quiet bungalow, somewhere in the middle of the compound, not alongside one of the pools and not facing the road, and I got what I asked for. We easily found our way in the dark with the map we received. The key card that unlocked the door was also to be used for activating the electricity of the bungalow (something that the receoptionist hadn't told us), so it took a few moments before the lights went on.
The bungalow was clean and was kept clean by the service personnel 5x a week. Mattresses were a bit hard to my taste.
Positive points of the accommodation: spacey bathroom (8 m2), bedroom (12 m2) and living room (16 m2). Cleanliness. Very hot water. The orientation towards the south (sun!).
Despite the smell of sewer, probably due to the absence of U-traps (was easy to solve: we just kept the plugs in the effluents), a coffee machine from the stone age, the chance of getting electrocuted by using the toaster, the mould on one of the walls that was humid (couldn't find the cause for the humidity) we were satisfied with the bungalow and didn't want to change.
On the following morning after our arrival we walked through the complex. Lot's of subtropical plants, flowers etc, well maintained. No flies, no mosquitoes. Three pools with clear water. There were gates in the separation with the top left neighbour (Maspalomas Dunas hotel .. remember?) and we used one of those neighbouring pools when the pool we used to swim in turned cloudy in the second week of our stay. At the pool close to the reception one can have reasonably priced snacks from 12:30 till 15:30. The Cola however tasted diluted with water, probably to the presence of too many AIs
The majority of the guests to our estimation were Germans, followed by the Dutch and the Englishmen. In November when we were there, there were mainly middle-aged couples, and families with small children. Overall, a quiet setting at night
We made two trips, one around the island (took us 5 hours) and one through the middle. We were struck by the desolate vegetation and dry soil. Rather monotonous. We will not do that again. The third trip went to Puerto Rico on a Friday, where we took one of those ferries to Puerto Mogan to visit the local market. There rest of the vacation the car was used to drive to Vecindario that has a Carafour supermarket for buying food (fresh fish) and drinks and to drive most of the evenings to Varadero, a shopping centre at the coastal boulevard of Maspalomas, close to the lighthouse, with lots of restaurants and live music (very decent music for middle aged people).
Some advice: if you have a bungalow with a kitchen and cook yourself, bring along a potato peeler, scissors, a washing-up brush, a small sponge, tea bags, salt, spices, coffee and coffee filters (I can't remember I had a decent cup of coffee in a restaurant there), or buy the stuff at the first occasion you go to the super market.
The beach is about 15 minutes away by foot from the hotel. The sand, which isn't actual sand but pulverized lime from mussels (I was told) has a brown colour (not yellow or white). The dunes are very interesting. One warning though, if you can't stand the sight of nude people, then the Maspalomas beach isn't for you.
Although we have been in many places around the globe mainly for business purposes (Jp, Austr, Sri Lanka, USA), this was the first real holiday without children were we used a plane to reach our destination... and we liked it. Next month we'll continue by spending 14 days on Mauritius, but the flight will last 11 hours compared to 4 hours to Gran Canaria. If Mauritius isn't considerably more attractive, we certainly will visit Gran Canaria again, most likely in the same resort or one that is closer to the beach
