Great Holiday but Nice Hotel

I have just returned from a two week stay at this hotel with my Mother. The hotel looked very impressive upon arrival if not a little overwhelming with its size. I read write ups before we went which all sounded so good, however we were disappointed over the two weeks.

Walking into Reception you could see oppulence all over however, that is where it ended internally. The check in time was far too long and there were only 6 of us checking in at the same time and 4 staff on duty. At the time of check in we were asked what time we wanted to dine - 6.30pm or 8.30pm. The former is far too early and the latter is far too late. We opted for 6.30pm though and on our first night in the restaurant we found that people were drifting in at all times so we took their lead on future nights. We were told where our room was and found it ourselves. However, the safe had been left open but in the locked position. Called reception to get someone to sort it out, 30 mins later we were still waiting. Called again, a man came, shrugged his shoulders and told me it was working (I might be a woman but I'm not stupid and I speak the language!) and we waited another 30 minutes. Still no sign of anybody so, in the end, I marched down to reception. A man came to fix it (please note, 'fix' which obviously means it was broken!). Not a good start to the holiday. Anyway, in the Thompson spiel, they say under 'Facilities' that pool towels are provided. Well, they are in your bathroom on day one but if you want them changed, you don't put them in a 'bin' and take a fresh one, you take them to a towel shed and exchange them for one Euro per towel. If I had known that, I would have taken my own. The breakfasts were very good, dinner buffet style was ok but very monotonous after two weeks. The one let down in the restaurant is the fact that if you want to sit out and enjoy a warm evening, you are mixed among smokers. It's disgusting to have smoke wafting in your face when you are eating. We suggested to the 'Customer Relation' team at the hotel that they divide it into smoking and non smoking sections in the terrace parts.

The Atlantico restaurant was nice for dining - the Maitre D and all staff were lovely - always with a ready smile and happy to help, especially at breakfast time. The other restaurant for breakfast/dinner was like dining in a very large Church Hall with its lighting and decor. The outside of both those restaurants was very nice though.

Lunches at the poolside bars was appalling. 4.5 Euros for a toasted sandwich which consisted of two slices of thin bread, one piece of lettuce, one slice of tomato, one slice of cucumber - toasted. Pathetic. We found a lovely bakery on the board walk which did sumptuously filled sandwiches for 2 Euros and cans of drink in the supermarket for 60 cents. The grounds of the hotel were wonderful though. The staff were cleaning all day every day. The staff in general were very helpful, smiled and greeted you warmly (except for Reception), each and every day.

The room was clean and functional. The larger Lopesan hotel opposite was a monstrosity but seeing it was bearable as beyond that there were the mountains. The Boardwalk was lovely for walking/running along. The beach was clean, the choice of shops and shopping was very good. Lovely location. I would return but not to that hotel or a hotel larger than that. It was far too big. Too many Germans/Dutch too although the Brits probably opt for self catering instead. The swimming pools were awesome and the range of activities was very good. However, there should be two pools set aside for adults. Not everyone wants the delights of other people's children screaming in the pools.

Shame you let us down Thomson. You've always been so reliable in the past. We've been to the area many times before so knew our way around however if we were there for the first time, we would have been disappointed by the attendance of the Rep. There was no obvious information available from your company. Nothing was left out other than a note giving the office number in case anyone needed anything. There was no indication what time the rep was around - only by chance did we hear he was there between 9-10am. We had to chase twice to find out our pick up time. Surely there should be a perspex board giving information on trips, pick up times, Rep times, contact details etc at the very least. The other thing is that the size of the hotel was not completely obvious in your description. The grounds were wonderful but the hotel was gigantic - too large and impersonal.

great break away to relax

from A TripAdvisor Member
My partner and I aged 27 & 25 visited this hotel just before Easter, 2003 and ever since we have been comparing every hotel we stay in to it, and we travel a lot. Unfortunatly for us we have not found one that we enjoyed as much as this one.
The reports are right, it is full of Germans / Europeans and is not a great place to go if you want to meet other English people, nor is it good if you have the buffet dinner each night. We were the youngest couple there but if you expect this when you go then its no surprise.
We opted to go out of season and just had B&B, as we enjoy going to local restaurants for dinner. We were very impressed with the food at the local Irish bar and a nice fish restaurant near the beach.
The hotel itself was very impressive. We went here to relax and spend quality time with each other, and thats what we did. The rooms were amazing, simple, very clean and large. The pools were fabulous and we spent hours playing in the water.
We did find that as the week went on closer to Easter the hotel got a lot busier, and we didn't like it as much. Breakfast was a scramble for clean tables.
My advice is go out of season and you will get good quality of service but expect it to be quiet, as you'll only enjoy yourself if you are enjoying the company you are with.

Just perfect!

I have just returned from a week-long stay at the Gran Hotel Costa Meloneras. (10. december - 17. december 2004)
I went with my husband and my 5-year-old daughter as well as my parents. Before we arrived we were a bit worried that the hotel might not be the perfect place to spend a holiday with children. However, it turned out to be just the opposite - my daughter was treated like a princess. The staff was very friendly and professional and everybody seemed to love children. I don't know how anybody can get the impression that the staff is not friendly - we certainly couldn't wish for more. Although it is a big hotel with a lot of guests, all the waiters were able to remember exactly what we wanted - and how we wanted it - next time we met.
The pool area is the most impressive I've ever experienced. We were particularly fond of the "Rio piscina" - (the flood) were we could swim around for hours.
The food, which was served at buffets, was well prepared and delicious. There was always something new everyday, although I have seen more dishes to choose from at other Canarian hotels - however there still was too many different dishes for us to be able to taste them all.
The rooms were a bit dark but otherwise very nice. Our room was spotlessly clean, and the towels were changed almost on a daily basis.

All in all the Gran Hotel Costa Meloneras is a fantastic place, and we will definitely go there again.

Oh, by the way - there is one problem: Once you've left the hotel to go back home, you feel terribly depressed...

Not Entirely Impressed

from scouseguy
I am writing this from The Hotel I still have 3 days left!. I am 26 with my parents the hotel is huge good standard (as expected from German Hotel) the hotel is full of Germans I myself am English have found most of the m arrogant and they do like to stare.
The evening buffets are okay but reptitive, the breakfasts are nice.
There is an annoying lifeguard (yellow t shirt) who goes round moving beds 6 inches and thats no exagerattion!! He is a Jobs Worth!! A few of the waiters are not pleasant done even say thankoyu when you tip them.
It is a nice hotel rooms are average in decor and it can be noisy in early morning. Weather is great and the restaurants alon gthe front are nice and also can travel to Playa de Ingles and variopus shopping centers. Overall not for the young as the hotel of a night is not lively at all!!!

Costa Meloneras, Gran Canaria - Stunning Hotel!

from A TripAdvisor Member
We moved to this hotel from the Caserio Hotel (see other review) which was terrible.
Costa Meloneras was in contrast absolutely superb, so good that we barely left the complex the whole time that we were there. The staff were extremely helpful, pleasant and friendly. The food was excellent. The hotel grounds and interior are stunning - particularly the infinity pool. Amazing spa facilities. Great Location.
I really can't think of one thing that was a dissapointment, it was one of the best hotels that we have ever stayed in. We have vowed to only go to this hotel should we return to Gran Canaria.
Apparently this is rated as a 4* superior hotel but it certainly should be 5* plus!

great pools and spa, but food below average

from Kamante
It is clearly a (German?) package holiday and the hotel is huge, so do not expect a 5 star exclusive atmosphere. Although, the pools are great, the most gorgeous one aptly named "the lake". But the sounds of palm leaves in the wind and of ocean waves were drowned out by musak. And for night entertainment songs like comment ca va were heard, more fitting for the kiddies disco (every night at 7 in the front garden, regrettably you cannot miss it) than for night entertainment. Very eighties!
The spa is a 5 star experience and worth the 40+ euro's. But the food -buffet- is very very average, with little variety or quality. Too much grated carrots, not enough inspirational, good tasting food. The a la carte restaurant did not show very exciting menu's either. Room service was equally dissapointing -some sandwiches with -you guessed- grated carrots, but not even the most common meals such as burgers, pasta's, pizza, fries, let alone more exciting dishes. The rooms are all right, a bit bland, but the bathrooms are very nice.
Be aware there are only few rooms that may have a view over the pool or ocean. Even with a pool/garden view room you risk a view at another wing.
And for the sun bathers: although there is a rule that you cannot reserve a pool chair, the early birds will have claimed the first rows before 9 am! But there seem to be plenty of chairs for all. October 2004. Lovely weather (28-30 C).

Superb Family Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
Just back from a week at this great hotel!, I would recommend this Hotel to couples or parents with children, however, not for young adults (18 - 25) who will find it pretty quiet, the food is great, the staff are friendly & efficient and the rooms are as you would expect them.

The main swimming pool is huge in addition there are various smaller pools, the beach is 1 min walk away, however, be careful there is a nudist beach about 800 metres further up the beach next to the dunes.

Playa de Ingles is a 6 euro taxi fare away, again be warned this is full of young adults enjoying themselfs!.

You will find lots of activities to do, indeed my friend & I did a Scuba diving course with the superb Puerto Rico diving centre (you need to check the internet), approx 20 km's away (they will pick you up for no charge). The staff at the Hotel know all the activities available on the island and will even book them for you.

The weather is great all year round and I for one will be going again.

A superb holiday!

On arrival at the Gran Hotel Costs Meloneras you will be amazed by its size. It is by far the largest hotel I have ever stayed in... But don't let that put you off!

I went for a week with my boyfriend from 2-9 September. The weather was beautiful (around 30 degrees) and you can easily spend your days just relaxing in the fantastic gardens or by one of the four pools. There are hundreds of sun loungers and we didn't have a problem finding two to use but I should imagine it's a lot busier during the summer months. However, everything is maintained to a very high standard so you won't be disappointed from a cleaniness point of view.

Our room was a standard double and was beautiful again with a lovely balcony overlooking the mini golf course and the sea! We paid an extra £5 or so a night to upgrade to half board and this is well worth it. The buffets are magnificent and there is a wide variety of food (local produce and international) on offer. There are two restaurants to choose from if you are on half board, both of which have seating areas outside to make for a very pleasant meal.

Overall, we were hugely impressed with the hotel and would recommend it! The reception staff were extremely helpful as were all of the restaurant and housekeeping staff that we met. The only thing that lets the hotel down is the very slow bar service when you are sitting on the terrace and perhaps the lack of information with regard to any sports activities etc that take part throughout the day. Other than that, if you want a fairly luxurious and relaxing holiday, find yourself a deal to this hotel!

Fantastic !

from A TripAdvisor Member
We had our holidays from 3 to 17 juli 2004 at Gran Hotel Costa Meloneras . In one word : marvellous !The staff and all people were very friendly, the food was very good and we really enjoyed the garden and the fantastic dunes .

Fabulous facility but extreme arrogant staff!

from A.Jan
Just came back from the Easter vacation in Hotel Costa Meloneras. Fabulous architecture and landscape! The tremendous pools and tropical garden made a real paradise on the small island! However, the arrogant attitude of the staff may quite well devastate your holiday mood... From the concierge to restaurant hostesses, the service was either tarrying or lack of enthusiasm. My boyfriend and I both felt we were obviously ignored. Strong question if they have any problem with colored people... Well, only recommend this hotel for those beautiful people who want to book their Senior Suite...

Top Local Tips for Maspalomas

Best restaurants in Meloneras Venture to the othe side of the lighthouse if your staying in Maspalomas. The restaurants are really up-market and have a lovely feel to them. Try the Grand Italia if you want a romantic, beautifully preparded dinner.

Maspalomas Aqauland Enjoy a great family day out at Aqualand the water park is about ten minutes away in a taxi, it really is a good day out

Aqualand Grab a taxi (6 euros) to the park and spend a few hours having fun on the slides. We went in Mar 07 and the park was quiet which meant no queues!
