Top Local Tips for Madrid
Travel passes Get a 3 day travel pass (or for as many days as you are there). We hopped on and off loads of buses etc and saved loads of money.
Collier 886 Take the Metro from the airport to Madrid centre. I would recommend that you choose a Hotel near a Metro Station (which is not very hard in Madrid). It cost 6 euros 70 for 10 individual uses (July 2008) which covered both of us for the return trip too. We were quoted 35 euros from a taxi driver one way !!!!! It saved us a lot of money and don't be put off with the station changes. Its really really easy to use.

Small European elevator. Hallway lights are motion activated. They go on when you enter.
Small bathroom. No hair dryer. Standard small motel type soap. Room size is about 8 x 12. It's pretty small. Floor is tiled. No carpeting. Our rear facing room was quiet.
Television was all Spanish stations. No CNN, FOX or BBC.
Beds were comfortable. This room was more for basic sleeping. No hanging out. Breakfast buffet was 5 Euros per person or $6.20 at the current rate of $1.20.
Walk a block or so right out of the hotel. There's a bakery. Next block had a good old fashioned New York type of a coffee shop. Breakfast completo 3 Euros for coffee, pan (bread-several choices) and fresh squeezed orange juice.
Think of this hotel as a small NYC room meets Motel 6. It's acceptable if you're 25. If you're used to a major hotel chain, I'd stay elsewhere.
