Top Local Tips for Madrid

Museums Thyssen vs Prado These two great museums are across the street from each other. The Thyssen is probably 1/4 the size which is its strength and weakness - and the same is true for the Prado. The Thyssen has a more accessible collection of paintings in that there are fewer per period. In addition it has a large concentration on my favorite period 1860 to 1930. I believe this is the only time since the 16th and 17th century when so many great artists flourished. This is a strong point of the Thyssen. You can do the museum in an afternoon or so. It is accesible in both English and Spanish. The Prado is big not Louvre big but big. It is a full day and you get work out. It has a massive collection of religious paintings from early to the 18th century. It has a tremendous concentration of El Greco, Goya, Velasquez, etc. It has one Rembrandt so the collection is very selective. If you love the Met and the Louvre then this is your museum. Both about the same price

Watch out for your stuff in Silken Puerta de Castilla!Do not forget anything ! Wach out in Silken Puerta de Castilla! At first see it looks like a regular 4* hotel-the location is kind of far away from everything but somehow with the transportation in madrid you can relatively easy get to the center.The problem of this hotel is the personal!Don't forget anything there because there is now way to get it back-watches, telefons or some kind of jewell the personal doesn't care that you may want it back.The reason that you are forigner gives them the sensation that you probably won't be able to return asking for your stuff.If you dear to call more than 2 times there won't be anybody answering you even at receotion because they see that you are calling from abroad. So your stay there may cost you much more that you have planned!!!
