Top Local Tips for Madrid

Take a bottle of Pepto Bismol with you! Unfortuntely, a couple of days into the trip, my partner and I both suffered from traveler's diarrhea. Symptoms would include pressure, pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhea and nasea. I went to a pharmacy and told them our dilemma. The pharmasist acted as if I told her that I was addicted to crack cocaine and said I needed to see a doctor. Then went to El Corte Ingles and asked if they had anything for stomach pain and pressure (didn't want to get into it). They gave me the equivalent of Rolaids. So, we had to suffer for a few days until it went away on its own. Pepto Bismol would have done wonders.

Hidden Gem If you wish to see a wide range of famous art works without the crowds and queues of the big 3 visit the Real Academia de las Artes on Calle Arenal ( 2 min from Puerta del Sol). This is where Picasso and Dali studied. The morning we went for the first 30 mins we were the only visitors.

Don't be afraid of the Metro! I was hesitant to take the Metro back to the airport and would have happily paid a taxi 30 Euro ($45 US) to take us, but my sister insisted that we could do it. After all...it only costs 2 Euro per person, so its a bargain! So, I begrudgingly hauled my luggage down the Metro station with her (elevators weren't working that day...ugh!) But, after a few moments studying the map...which is color-coded and easy to read, we figured out the way. 45 mins and a quick train change later, we were at the Madrid airport! Voila! It was simple, took exactly the same amount of time as a taxi, and we saved more than 40 bucks. Plus, we felt a great sense of accomplishment. Go us!
