Top Local Tips for Madrid

Airport hotels If staying at one of the hotels near the airport dont eat in, there are plenty of tavernas and restaurants in the town that are much better value (dont be afraid to leave the hotel!)

All I saw was the airport and hotel Beware Iberia airlines. They lost some of the luggage of fifteen of our group and the customer service desk did not seem to know what to do about it. Only the persistance of our leader got the backs located quickly and brought to the airport, but he had to hire a truck and go out to the airport to get the luggage when it came in at midnight. Still, mine alone was lost and it took me a couple of hours of searching to finally find that I had to report it to Iberia lost and found which is in the basement of the airport. Those people did a good job and found the bag (it never had been put on an Iberia plane) through their computer system. Fortunately, I had my baggage check and the baggage tag of the one bag that did arrive. Without those, I would have been in trouble. Keep all those tags and receipts!

Hotel Lope De Vega This was a gem of a hotel. It was small, but very comfortable. Staff were all very friendly. It was across the street from the Prado and convenient to the Regina Sophia and Thyssen. It was also close to the train station and not too far from a metro stop. Taxis were also convenient. The hotel also provided easy free internet access. The breakfast buffet was excellent. Beds were exceedingly comfortable - a welcome relief after a full day of sightseeing. Rooms with two single beds (together) were slightly larger. It was close to a VIPS - a welcome treat for more familiar food for US citizens. The only drawback was that the walls were thin, which could be a problem for those with sensitive ears. However, a room on one of the upper floors and at the rear of the property would help with any noise problems.
