Top Local Tips for Madrid

Walk a bit further If you stay in the older section of Madrid you will be confronted with tourist prices at every restaurant. Walk a bit further out, say down to the Rastro(?) market area. So much cheaper.

El Rastro street fair On sunday morning, enjoy a nice stroll down to nearby La Latina and check out the weekly flea market on El Rastro. It's more like a NYC street fair than a flea market, and you can shop alongside locals bargaining for things like leather bags, clothing, crafts, souvenirs, jewelry, etc. When we were done shopping, we settled down to a nice early lunch at an outdoor cafe. Great way to spend a mellow sunday morning. (Note: We were advised by all to watch out for pickpockets around El Rastro)

Tablo flamenco bar opposite Hostal Macarena Don't bother with their 20 euros for a table plus one glass of vino tinto deal, especially in low-tourist season. There are no crowds, so you can sit anywhere you like, and the vino was quite acrid anyway.
