Top Local Tips for Madrid

Transport The double decker tour buses are excellent value to get out and about around town. You can buy a ticket for one day or multiple and with over 20 stops you can get on or off when and where it suits you through the days you have purchased. We used the oportunity to visit the museum, walk in some of Madrids beautiful parks, take lunch away from the area we were stayng in and explore a little further a-field.Cheesy yes, but a cheap alternative to Taxi's! The Metro system in incredibley simple and easy to use, clean and regular.Also there is a flea-market on Sundays, check with your hotel the exact location. It's busy and located in a dodgey part of town (so watch your wallets) but well worth it for a bargain.

Madrid is clean and beautiful! There are so many destinations in Spain that I think Madrid is sometimes overlooked as just another big city. I feel that it has some of the most beautiful architecture in Europe and the City was spotless. We found the people very warm and friendly, the shopping amazing and the food reasonably priced and excellent. There are excellent parks, amazing museums and just about everything anyone could want in an urban vacation!

Madrid bus A useful tip is to take the Madrid open top bus. A two day (consecutive days) ticket is more economical. You can hop on and off at will and you also have a commentary. We took the historic route all round the city to orientate ourselves and then used the facility as a taxi with a difference!! The other route , the 'modern' route is connected at specific points with the historic route and you can spend up until mid-night experiencing the sounds and sights of the wonderful city of Madrid. Whislt we were there we took a birdwatching trip with Spain Birds. I had arranged this prior to our visit. Our guide Santiago Villa was excellent and did not disappoint. We couldn't believe there were so many different species in such close proximity to the city of Madrid. Santi was also commenting that he did not think the people of Madrid appreciated that too. It was the highlight of the trip and really made my husband's birthday so memorable.
