Despite the taxi driver not knowing how to find the hotel from its adress, the hotel itself is lovely. It's in a rather secluded plaza across from the Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales and easy walking distance to a variety of attractions. The rooms are nicely appointed and the bathrooms are spacious.

Top Local Tips for Madrid

Places we had excellent food... 1-Restaurante los Galayos, one block off Plaza Mayor; 2-La Plateria Bar Museo, few blocks from the Prado museum; 3-La Casa del Abuelo, south of Puerta del Sol - excellent gambas al ajillo, shrimp cooked in oil and garlic! Lastly, 4-Bar Majaderitos, 2 blocks south of Tio Pepe end of Puerta del Sol for deep fried long doughnuts called churros & dip them in thick hot chocolate, delicioso!

Museum food Anyone even remotely interested in art shoud go to the Museo Thyssen Bornemisza, which also has a great restaurant with a fixed lunch for €11

Visit to Teatro Real Make sure when you book tickets for the Teatro real that your seats are to the front of the box or in the stalls. the rear box seats, although quirky, have a very limited view and you can end up with a sore neck! Interval drinks in the restaurant is a must do experience!
