I just came back from Madrid yesterday. It was my first trip to Spain and I stayed in "Hotel Europa" (Calle del Carmen, 4 I think the address is) for the last two nights out of a 3 nights journey. I was looking for a hotel and I walked in and asked for the room rates and we paid Euro 80 for a double room.

The hotel had a perfect location in Puerto Del Sol , literally 2 mins walk from the station. The bathroom was excellent , marble floor and shiny. At night we had the window/door open as we were on 2nd floor and we could see down the road full of shops and they played lovely music in the streets...very charming area.

I liked the room as well as the area a lot - okay it was 80 for a double room so not a budget hotel but not expensive either.
I will rate my overall experience 5, not because it was a Five Star Hotel, but because I got all what I expected + a lot more for 80 euros a night for the double room. The hotel was nicely decorated and to me it looked like a four star hotel. Breakfast was not included though but they have a nice cafe as well as chairs outside in the road where many people enjoyed themselves.

Top Local Tips for Madrid

Extra metro charge I was hot. There is a charge of 1 euro to get OUT of the metro at the airport. That's right. You pay to get in and ride and then pay to be allowed out of the metro at the airport. Something about that just isn't right. I even wrote to the metro people who naturally laid the blame on someone else. The euro won't send me to the poor house, but I warn others to have an extra coin or you may be in there forever.

Photos of Hotel Eurpoa and Restaurante Botin When we visited the Hotel Eurpoa last July, they were still doing major construction. It's nice to hear that their own restaurant is now open. It was closed last summer. One of the best locations in the city, close by the Puerta del Sol and the Plaza Major. A future contributor should let us know when the street work in the Puerta del Sol is finished. By all means, when in Madrid, visit the Restaurante Botin. It has tremendous character as well it should, being the oldest restaurant in the world. Visit for lunch and avoid the crowds. The steak I had was one of the top five steaks I've ever had, anywhere.

metros Use the Metro, its cheap, but remember always use common sense security for your passports, cameras, etc. Have a good trip!
