Top Local Tips for Madrid

Use AeroCity We booked shuttle service through AeroCity. They have an English website and they were very professional, punctual, clear and reasonable. While they can't promise you will be the only party on the shuttle (you can secure a private one for an additional fee), there are no more than 2 other passengers (going to different hotels). We were 4 adults with 2 medium, 2 large , 1 roll-on and 4 small bags. We wound up being the only passengers and arrived at our hotel in less than 20 minutes for 23 euros total (less than 1 taxi ride and we would have needed 2). When you arrive outside customs, you use a public pay phone (no charge) and call the toll-free number they provide. They tell you where to meet your driver who was there in 5 minutes. They even answer their phone in Madrid (from the U.S.) and answer questions in English. I booked less than 24 hors before we arrived. I highly recomment this service.

vegeterian dining there's a great organic food store and it has a buffet on calle de las Huertas, open from 11am to midnight, just across from the Jazzart bar, right around calle San Jose. Really good and inexpensive food for vegetarians. Best meal we had in Madrid. Eating vegetarian is not easy in this city. There's also a place called Maoz on calle Alcala which had great falafel, also a great value and good food. Also BioTika on calle amor de dios. We didn't try it but it has good reviews. Another place further down calle de las Huertas has vegetarian food, near plaza matute, a little Italian place. Most tapas bars have vegetarian too, but you need to know what you're asking for.

Taking the train Atocha, the main train station in Madrid is just a couple blocks down the street from the Hotel Gran Canarias, Prado & La Reina Sofia museums. Perfect location to stay in. If you take a trip to Segovia, which we highly recommend, the Cercanias train (daily, local commuter train) takes you there, 2 hours. You buy tickets on the day you need to depart. Cannot buy them in advance. The train is a great way to see the area. Beautiful journey out through and past the mountains into Segovia. Stay in the old town. Charming
