Madrid is the pickpocket capital of Europe Don't treat this city like Paris, Naples or any place you may have thought had master pickpockets. Whatever precautions you have taken, think again. There isn't any place like Madrid when it comes to master thieves, and gangs of organized, highly motivated con artists. Don't put your purse on the floor in a restaurant, or anywhere for that matter. Don't walk with a back pack on your back, or a back pack purse - always have these hanging in front of you or just leave them in hotels. Don'tr have your wallet in any coat or pants pocket. Have it in some sort of compartment under your clothing. Don't ever respond to someone on a cell phone asking you about ANYTHING no matter how innocent they look. While you answer, or try to decipher the question, something else will be happening around you, rapidly. Do not turn to look when fights break out. Do not turn to look when people start screaming on the subway, or on the street. Be attentive everywhere - museums, fine restaurants
