Learn some Portuguese and get your bearings! Taxi drivers in Rio are not like the ones in London. They don't know the names of the streets - not by a long shot! We found we often had to direct them to our destination - especially returning home - and it really pays to learn (at least) a few phrases in Portuguese for directions. Learn how to direct them from the local bar area back home and you'll be fine: that way you can ask them to take you to the area and then deal with the finer points when you get there. If you're really rubbish at languages, ask your hotel/guesthouse owner to write down the directions for you and you can just show it to the taxi driver. Also, be sure they turn the meter on and remember that it should be tariff 1 until 8pm - after 8pm they switch it to tariff 2 and the price goes up.
