Superb location, friendly staff and value for money

I have stayed twice a year for the past 3 years in the Peninsula and cannot recommend it more highly. The convenience to all amenities is second to none at a very competitive accommodation rate. I will continue to use this excellent value for money hotel for all future visits to Gerona.

Stayed in Peninsular on 2 occasions - winter short breaks. The hotel has been refurbished and the rooms are really nice. Hotel is 1 star and you get a good price. I would say that air conditioning would probably be required in summer. This is the only thing I can see that may be lacking.
On the other hand you will not get a city hotel close to shops and sites for the excellent rates offered here. The staff are very friendly and helpful with excellent English. Would certainly book again. My 25 year old daughter could not find any faults - which is amazing as she's a discerning guest normally.

Would recommend.

Nice place, reasonable price

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I stayed here for 2 nights earlier this month and found it to be a nice place. Although lacking the quirky features to be found at other hotels the room was a good size and bathroom more than adequate. We paid 52Euros per night for the room which I thought was excellent value. It's location across the river from many of the eateries was ideal for building up an appetite in the short walk. Overall a great place to stay if you want cleanliness and comfort at reasonable rates.

Nice place, but a little loud

from goreliky
For the 62eur we paid, it was very nice. The room was nice, it is centrally located, all the amenities were equal to other hotels I paid twice as much for in other cities in Spain. My only complaint is that it was a little loud, the noise from the cars woke us up pretty early and the shutters did not help, and the street noise from people in cafes went well into the night and we were there on a wed & thurs, I can only imagine how much louder it would be like on a weekend. Good value for the money, but I doubt I would ever bother visiting Girona again, 1/2 a day was about enoug to see the old city and there is nothing to do in the new part of town. We spend the 2nd day going to Figueroas to the Dali museum and to Rosas for the beautiful and quiet beaches.

excellant location.

Have just returned from Gerona, and stayed four nights ar the Peninsular. Its in the centre of town, great for the old town and restaurants. the hotel is clean, excellent value for money, with a good buffet breakfast and english speaking staff. best location of any hotel I saw there.

We have just booked out of this great hotel right in the centre of Girona. We were very impressed, not just with the value, but the cleanliness and excellent service. It´s location is excellent, being just by the bridge over the River Onyar. The cold continental breakfast is reasonably priced and more than adequate and the Reception staff are professional and helpful. The cleaning staff are very friendly too. I would also like to say that, as a person with a chronic back problem that the beds were comfortable too! If you are planning a break in Girona, this is where you must stay. Tip: check out Expedia as you can often get better rates than by booking direct.

Went in december 2004 for a few days to Girona, and this hotel was just great (rooms, location, price). On paper it has no stars, but in reality it offers at least 3 stars quality. In fact, the rooms were comparable with a 4 star hotel I later booked In Barcelona. The only minor detail is the slow and small elevator.
It is a bargain too (less than 50 EURO for a 2 -person room), but I am afraid this will go up in the future... I will certainly go back here if I ever visit Girona again.

Brilliant location!

My sister and I flew into Girona on the 6th of January, but couldn't pick up our rental until the next day, so we opted for the Peninsular. We couldn't have chosen better.

First of all, the hotel is in an IDEAL area... right near the river, the cathedral and an amazing group of restaurants. The tapas and sangria we had just 5 minutes walk from our hotel were the best of our entire trip in Spain.

The hotel is also lovely - such a relief after the Girona airport! Very quiet, fantastic and helpful staff, clean smoke-free rooms and gorgeous bathrooms. And breakfast was as excellent! It's served by a wonderful old man who told us all sorts of stories about the area and gave us advice for our driving trip (in Spanish, of course).

I would definitely stay there again, and this time for more than one night. Don't listen to the 1-star rating... we LOVED it!

Absolute Gem

My husband and I stayed here after an exhaustive week in Barcelona. This hotel was a huge delight ...and an exceptional value. The staff was friendly, even to us Americans (not so in our Barcelona Hotel). We needed this nice treatment then.

The breakfast was excellent...rooms were minimalist but very very clean. Bathroom was good. Sound proofing of our room was excellent. The maid came in on the second day to "laver" our bedspreads. She was most gracious. I would definitly stay here on my return trip to beautiful Girona.

Excellent value hotel

Four of us visited Girona at the end of November 2004 and I must say I was a bit "worried" when I found out that the Hotel was rated as 1 star.
I shouldn't have worried!
We were all very happy with the Hotel. The rooms were modern and scrupulously clean. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the continental breakfasts were excellent.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this Hotel to my friends and I intend to revisit Girona and the Peninsular very soon.
The only downside was the lack of a car park attached to the Hotel, as we had 4 sets of golf clubs to unload each evening - however there is ample parking within 500 yds.
Plenty of good value restaurants within easy walking distance of the Hotel make this a very good location for enjoying Girona.

great location

perfectly located for the old and new town, the room was very spacious and spotlessly clean. The staff were very helpful and friendly and recommended a couple of restaurants which were superb. Would definitely stay there again.

Directions, staff and bathroom noises.

from dahlia-girl
Based on the reviews we read here and in Frommers, my Mother and I booked a room for 2 nights in October 2004. After we made the reservation, I contacted the hotel and asked for driving directions from Barcelona. Their response was to "Go to the city centre and there will be signs directing you to our hotel." Getting to Girona was easy, FINDING the hotel requires one to have the patience of Job. There was one sign pointing to the hotel but it was still miles from where we needed to be. We never saw any other sign.

No where does any literature indicate that the address is on a WALKING street. We drove through the city center (and on many, many one-way streets, around and around) and couldn't find the street. Then, in desperation, we stopped 2 different people to ask where the address was. Since we aren't fluent in Spanish, we finally figured out through finger gestures that the address was on a walking street, not a driving street!!! And, I remember passing a walking street on one of the many circles I made through the town center. So I turned the car around (again!) and headed to that street. Of course, I couldn't drive to the hotel so I parked the car and "hiked" in leaving my Mother to stay in the car in case I couldn't locate it. As it turns out, after we got our room, the front desk told us there was a street on the OTHER side of the walking street that I could drive up and unload our luggage. Why this info wasn't given to us by the internet or when I asked for driving directions baffles me. We wasted a lot of time and pointless aggravation to find this place.

And, as other reviewers stated, there wasn't any air conditioning. We stayed here in mid-October on a balmy night and had to leave the windows open. But, our window overlooked the driving street so our choices were to 1) sweat all night with the windows closed, or 2) listen to street noise and people talking. Neither was a workable option so unless you stay at this hotel when it's cool, DON'T accept the room that has a view of the street!!!

Front desk help was odd. We asked for a map and got a very incomplete map when we checked in and was told to go to the tourist center to get more info and maps about the places to visit. We did and got a better map. That evening, I asked the front desk for dinner recommendations and the other hotel clerk pulled out the same map I got at the tourist center listing not only ALL the streets but all the places to visit. Why wasn't this map given to us on our first inquiry? And, the woman who ran the "day" shift had an attitude. In no way were we rude but her attitude indicated that she had no time for customer questions.

Another "benefit" the hotel tauts is free internet hook-up. When we arrived, their interent access was down and never worked the three days we were there. I told the front desk of this and of course it was met with "Are you sure you know what you're doing?" I build Web sites.

We signed up for the buffet breakfast and it was fairly pricey but what we expected. Cold meats, cheese and bread. There was yogurt and cold cereal. Some canned fruit but the juices weren't fresh. Coffee was decent.

Finally, the bathrooms. My Mother is a senior and needs some type of mat or strips in the tub to ensure her balance while showering. Usually American tubs have some type of handhold for the eldery. There wasn't any in this bathroom. And, there is no privacy between the rooms. When I went into the bathroom, I heard other people's conversations, showers and even neighbors bowel noises!

I'd recommend another place to stay unless they change directions, personnel and acoustic insulations.

Top Local Tips for Girona

Parking there is no parking but if you drive up the road which the hotel is on and take a left you will find a car aprk on the left hand side which the hotel has a discount rate for.

Walled City Walk Get a map from the tourist office, very central and walk round the walls... wonderful views

Jewish Museum Excellent that post-Franco Spain now fully acknowledges the expulsion and worse of the Jews in 1492.
