Top Local Tips for Gijon

Pleasantly suprised by Gijon We included Gijon on our recent Spain itinerary, solely because my husband's relatives live there. Since very little about Gijon is mentioned is most guidebooks, I wasn't expecting much. However, I found myself charmed by Gijon. It is a small city on the sea, with a beautiful esplanade, parks, Roman ruins, and a medieval quarter. It caters to a local tourist trade in the summer, so there are still lots of interesting restaurants and shops. Nonetheless, after our visits to Madrid, Barcelona, and Bilbao, Gijon felt the most "authentic" to me, and we FELT like the only overseas tourists in town! We also enjoyed certain aspects of the local cuisine. Asturians are very proud of their cider, we had excellent seafood, and we were definitely better fed for our money in Gijon than anywhere else on our trip.

Call a Cab You must call a taxi...they will not just stop for you...they will just wave back. Ask your hotel for the dispatch # before you go out...
