Coffee and pastries exquisite. But generally, food overrated. The tapas bars were numerous and some were very good, but they were very rich and if you're not much of a meat eater it's slim pickings. We also found moderately-priced restaurants ( approx. $20-$50 US per person) only so-so. Fish was the best bet generally and nicely cooked, on the whole, but it was rarely garnished or served with anything. Just fish on a plate and bread. Everything else ( salad, veggies, potatoes etc) had to be ordered separately, which is usually the case in Europe, but difficult for visitors from North America to adjust to ( especially if you come from Toronto, where we have some of the best food in the world, at half the price of European restaurants.)We had two paellas in San Sebastian at different locations. One was poor, the other so-so, even though we paid approximately the equivalent of $30 US per person, without wine. However, the coffee everywhere was exquisite and there were AMAZING pastries. We ate the best chocolate cake EVER in San Sebastian.
