The Lauria was mostly a comfortable and pleasant place to stay for several days while we enjoyed exploring and just being in Tarragona. The hotel is old but kept clean and in good order by a friendly staff. The rooms were spacious. Many of the staff spoke enough English to make communication easy. The location was especially pleasant and convenient, on the quiet end of the main street near the balcony overlooking the sea, and near the gothic quarter of the city. There are a number of good restaurants, food shops (e.g., ice cream), and groceries nearby. On the negative side, the beds were well used and could have been more comfortable. If you plan on renting a car (which you won't really need in Tarragona), keep in mind that there is only on-street parking near the Lauria. Overall, we would stay at the Lauria again on a future trip to Tarragona.

Top Local Tips for Tarragona
Cathedral and Roman architecture Cathedral is a bit of an uphill walk from town centre, but well worth it - impressive audio tour is included in entrance price. The local toursit office will provide a list of the roman sites with opening hours, many of these, such as the amphitheatre are well worth a visit!
Amazing food Try out the restaurant / wine bar De Vins. Amazing food! We stumbled across it on our first night and loved it. Méndez Nüñez, 10 43004 Tarragona. www.devins.es

However, the Lauria is in a state of slow decline, its facilities not at all varied, the corridors somewhat dim, the rooms a bit shabby and dark (on one or two days, a small number of large bugs of some sort emerged in the bathroom, but were no great threat to one's health or sanity), and the hotel's concept of breakfast a largely fixed, over-sugared and -starched menu that varied in no way from day to day. Not a good start to even the best of days. Unlike one of the even shabbier, slightly cheaper and considerably less comfortable establishments in town, the Lauria had no evening restaurant facilities of its own.
On the other hand, the Lauria staff were cheerful and efficient enough, the price pretty reasonable (roughly 45-47 Euros per night, I think), and -- as said -- for a non-holiday, it could have been a lot worse. But unless it gets a proper make-over pretty fast, it will indeed continue to decay slowly from year to year. Next year (in May 2006) when I travel to Tarragona again for a similar teaching visit, I'll almost certainly attempt to book into somewhere with a room with a view and probably better-maintained facilities, even if at a noticeably higher price.
