Historical Traveller Reviews of San Diego Hotel

food not very good

from n1ck2604
The hotel its self was spotless the mades cleaned the room every day.
I booked this hotel because i had read good reviews of the hotel food, wich i thought was very poor you could not even get a nice piece of fruit. Stayed at this hotel for seven days and lived of chips i then went to the salou park for an extra two nights wich i found to be an excellant hotel so i would look in to going to that hotel before you book the san diego.

pikey as hell

from bettybrown25
My boyfriend and i booked a holiday to salou last june purely to go to Porta ventura...the Holiday was quite cheap about £250 each for 10 nights including flight meals insurance etc,so all in all really good value. We also booked a 14 day pass through our rep at home for Porta Ventura which was good value and a must...mind you, we only went three times, it was too hot to cue (cues massive) and the place was full of extremely loud spanish teens which i found intolerable.
The hotel i must say was basic but lovely and modern and reasonably clean..we were quite impressed by the hotel all in all and the air con was great....the only problem was the noise coming from the entertainment tent which was right underneath our balcony...a really anoying woman doing the entertainment and "i am the music man" playing over and over again..i think my boyfriend and i had it playing in our heads for weeks after. In the end, i just gave up and bought some ear plugs from the pharmacy.
Now to get to the nagative bit...this holiday felt more like costa del Newcastle than costa del sol...there were beer monsters everywhere..(probably due to the fact that it was during the world cup)...and hardened looking women wearing the world on their face and more gold than fort knocks giving you a look that could kill...basically it was like the show Shameless but a holiday special...i felt frightened to look people in the eye in case i got my lights punched out. It didnt feel friendly at all...and there were unrully kids running wild everywhere...basically you had no chance of getting in the pool unless you wanted to get injured by the kids pushing each other etc.
Same for the buffet in the evening...it felt really teratorial like " eh this is my place now get lost, i was here first" and the cue was really badly organised people pushing everywhere. I felt really unwelcomed for the first few days..not by the hotel staff but by the britts ...shame on you britts and i am a british northern girl...but this let the side down.
I really didn't enjoy much at all from this holiday my boyfriend and i felt stressed the whole time we were there and couldn't wait to get back to England...think it almost put our relationship on the rocks because it was so stressfull.
If you like a bit of pike and feel right at home with your footy kit on then this is the holiday for you ..BUT NOT ME! enjoy.

Great Value

from Jan409
We have just returned from a short break in Hotel San Diego.
We found the rooms very clean and well equipped. The food was very good with plenty choice every day.
Yes -the Hotel was mostly populated by Spanish, but after all - it is Spain you are in.
The hotel was further away from the main streets than we expected and was a good 15 minute walk (uphill )
away from the hub of Salou or the beach for that matter.
Because it was January , most of Salou was shut down so we really had to go into the old town to get shops... etc
Would we return to this hotel, probably not , but only because of its far out location.
It was value for money though !.

Happy Family Holiday

from ClanJohnstone
The Hotel San Diego was immaculate the maid service was excellent. The kids club rep was very good only thing was not enough children to for all the activities. The pool was very clean and cold but it was October. The bar staff very good except the female bar person could have smiled. The food in the restaurant was very good different meal every night and the children had a kids corner with different food for them pasta, chips, chicken nuggets, hamburgers, hotdogs etc and the grill on the opposite side of restaurant had something fresh cooked every night, i.e. steak, chicken, burgers, hotdogs, sausages etc and the dessert stand was very good excellent variety could not fault the food and the staff very friendly and helpful and good with the children. Only down side was the pensioners were there for free week holiday and they took over but if you had patience then everyone got served. Reception were very helpful. The entertainment at night was not good. The only downside was the season was ending and a lot of the bars and cafes were closing but it was worth while for the Halloween theme at the Theme Park was not to be missed especially the Parade on 30th October. The hotel was in a good position for all the amenities of Salou. would go back to Salou with the children as it had plenty for them to do.

New Year

from humey
Travel dates 30/12/06 - 06/01/07
Went to Hotel San Diego to celebrate New Year.
Not recommended for British.
Hotel only catrered for Spanish.
Entertainment programmes all for Spanish pensioners.
Food was way below average, fish, boned chicken, rabbit, pork and veal. If you did not eat it at lunch you got it in a sauce at dinner.
Trying to get the food was an experience. I have never seen so many pensioners barge there way in to get to the food. No chance of them joining a queue.
Restaurant staff were ok, but tended to the Spanish more than the British.
Reception staff were pleasant enough.
Male bar staff were pleasant enough, but everything was a bother to the female bar waitress. She made it clear that she did not want to serve you. I don't know why as we seemed to be the only people buying drinks. (she done herself out of a few tips)
On a positive side the hotel is spotlessly clean and sits in a prime location, and I have been assured by local bar people that the Hotel is completely different during the summer season.
I do not recommend Salou for this time of year as 98% of shops, bars and restaurants were closed.

Brenda from Paisley lots of Scots.

I was a bit apprehensive after booking this hotel for four slightly mature adults!!!! 45ish. What a pleasant surprise, as we can be a bit fussy, as you are at oor age. The hotel was spotless, maid service if you want it every day. It was one of the few places i have felt safe and the beach is just around the corner. You have everything at hand although the main buzz is a five minute walk away. For all you people who dont like the food, I dont know what you expect, none of us could fault it. One of the nights was a seafood night and although it is not my forte the spread was first class. Every night I was spoiled for choice and although we stayed in five star last year I would say this hotel gave them a run for their money.
Some of the guests said the noise from the front (poolside) was a bit noisy at night however, we did not experience any as our room was situated at the other end.
The downside was entertainment did not exist however, there are plenty of places to go including Victorias which is across the road from the hotel.
The bottom line is a holiday is what you make of it yourself and believe me I have had many and this was fun.
Cheap, Cheerful and Clean. The weather was perfect and its one of the few places I would return to. Enjoy.

OK hotel nice but ? Titanic bar Great for Families

from Southwalecoupple
Hi i have just come back yesterday from staying at the Hotel San Diego good things first

1. hotel reception were really helpful.
2. the hotel was really clean and rooms cleaned everyday.
3. food was nice and pleanty of i think i have put on a stone lol.

Bad things

1. Walls are really thin in rooms could hear people next door snooring, and talking,
2. food was much the same everyday, and burgers were sometimes raw.

With regards to the bars in salou i would say if your a family go to the Titanic bar as it is really good the food is great and they are very welcoming the bar manager Kerry was lovely and also the two young girls working there bent over backwards to help you.

We did go to other bars Tropical really expensive and not polite at all you got house of illusion with a free bar worth watching as some good magic.

We did find Salou to be quite smelly and boring as all the same shops and bars, streets were stinking and loads of bins arround if you are thinking of going for a week i would suggest you don't as a week would be enough, but you must go to port aventura haunted house was great if you need to ask anything else feel free to email me at jones931@hotmail.com

Great for a cheap getaway.

After seeing mixed reviews about the hotel we were a bit concerned about staying there, however, I’m happy to say the hotel was excellent, very clean and tidy. The staff were helpful and friendly, the facilities were very good. We can thoroughly recommend the kids club, it had a wide variety of morning and afternoon activities and the 2 girls that run it were brilliant. The entertainment in the evening was a bit naff but that didn’t bother us too much. I would recommend you ask for a high floor as there are some rooms over the bar and entertainment area which can be quite noisy until midnight (when the bar closes). The food was good, plenty of choice, with a grill bar that does burgers, sausages, fish etc. My only gripe is there were no free drinks with the evening meal, however 2 beers and bottle of water came to about 4.00 euros.
The hotel has 2 pools and a Jacuzzi; there are plenty of sun loungers so getting a place wasn’t an issue, even when we left it until late morning we still found a suitable place to sunbathe.
The hotel is very well situated and is within walking distance of the main beach and shopping areas.

The only thing which really annoyed me was how the staff were treated by a small minority of guests which really made me ashamed to be British, is it any wonder why the British are so disliked.

Had to get that one in, but all in all really enjoyed our stay in the San Diego.

no problems

from cheshirelad01
Just returned from a 7 night stay at the San Diego, having read all the reviews on this website we were a bit unsure what we would find as the reviews went from awful to good but we needn`t have worried, we could not find any real complaints, the San Diego did all we asked for in a resort hotel.
As other reviewers have said the rooms are a bit on the small side but we had 4 beds in ours and it still was comfortable, after all you dont go on holiday to sit in your room all day, the bathroom was fine , plenty of hot water all, day good shower and nice and clean. As for the rest of the room, it had a decent balcony, plenty of wardrobe/cupboard space, the whole room was well presented and clean with good maid service , the room was cleaned every day, fresh towels etc.
The rest of the hotel was very clean as well ,with a nice reception ,good dining area, the games room was good enough to keep the kids happy, the pool area was well kept, 2 pools one large pool with jacuzzi set above it, and small pool for toddlers, we had 4 children with us from 15 -4 yrs and they all loved it, plenty of sun beds , seating etc , never struggled to get a bed.
The food was very good, plenty of variety, themed food nights, mexican etc, as I have said we had 4 children with us inc a couple of fussy eaters and they all loved it, no problems, as other reviewers have said there is a grill chef every morning & night cooking pancakes , eggs etc for breakfast, and a selection of meats & fish in the evening SUPERB ! !, he also does burgers ,hot dogs etc for the kids and has roast peppers, onions etc, the rest of the food was great as well , some very good indeed!, salad, fresh veg, curry, cold meats & cheeses, etc .etc.
We found the staff to be friendly & helpful, check in & out was a breeze.
Some good points about the san diego.
good location, handy for nightlife, buses, shops etc.
very good & free air con in rooms.
you cant fault the cleanliness of the place.
good pool with outdoor bar.
good food.
entertainment every night , and its not bad.

if you really want to pick faults ,here are some minor niggles,
only two lifts, for a large hotel another might help & the odd
time only one worked
no drinks whatsoever with evening meal, milk, water ,juice &
hot drinks with breakfast, but you have to order & pay for any
drinks with evening meal, even water, the 1st night we had
soft drinks, beer etc and it was about 15 euros , times 7 or 14
nights it could mount up ! , after 1st night we had 2 or 3 large
bottles of water only 1.50 each..
All in all if you want a good clean 3 star hotel in Salou I can recommend the San Diego, we would go back.

Loved it

Top Local Tips for Salou

porta ventura go as early as you can to get on the best rides because it get busy very quickly

Take a Bus to Port Aventura We went to Port Aventura every other day. From our location in Salou at the Hotel San Diego a one way ticket on the Plana Buses 1.55 euros each. There was buses every 5 mins and at the weekends the last one does not leave the theme park until 12.30 after the fireworks

Portaventura Theme Park Try to go late in the day and stay until late as the queues for the rides are aound 2 hours long during the peak part of the day.
