Outstanding and very cool hotel

I would highly recommend the Grand Hotel Domine in Bilbao. Great location to the Gugenheim Musuem as well as to Bilbao City Center. Rooms are great, comfortable and ecclectic.

In an otherwise unattractive city in transformation, this hotel stands out like a sore thumb.
Our room (318) overlooked the Guggenheim, and having already seen the Aztec exhibition in the Guggenheim's NYC branch late last year, we didn't mind the extra time spent in our superb room, and when not in our room we were drawn to GHDB's trendy 'Splash&Crash' bar to sup on more-ish Cuba Libres and Kir Royales.
The weather in Bilbao may have been drizzly, but inside we were cheered up by the quirky design skills of 'Mariscal', the team behind the whole image of the hotel. The bathroom was the highlight with its Starck standalone bath and wet-room shower, and an incredibly cheap minibar meant we could quaff Cava a la P Diddy as we relaxed under atmospheric lighting while gazing out on the Guggenheim. And as for the bed turn-down service with it's little squeezy toys and chocolates, well I could go on and on and on ...

The Best Bilbao Hotel

We have stayed at the Gran Hotel Domine Bilbao (ghDB) for a few nights at the end of May 2005. On our holiday we opted to use the Trip Advisor as the last minute accommodation option, and took into account other reviews to see how hotels were rated, etc. We booked the first night via tripadvisor and got an excellent deal on Hotels[-].com, it was an executive room at half price. The hotel then offered us even a better special price for our second night after we asked at reception after our first night, with brekky for 2 thrown in.
If you are looking up this hotel you probably already know about its amazing design, it's internal courtyard with the 7-story high sculpture and you probably already heard about the hotel's best feature - the roof terrace overlooking Bilbao's famous Gherry landmark (where they also happen to serve great breakfast). This in addition to the fact that many of ghDB's rooms also overlook the museum.
The Hotel is truly of 4-star quality, the service is superb, you never see anything or hear anything, things just magically appear and are done, beds are prepared for the night with a special touch of little animals holding chocolates on your pillow. Any demand or request for information was handled with outmost courtesy and expeditiously met. Such a nice change from other 4-star establishments that are that just in name, have noisy gossiping staff who move tables at 7am dragging them across wooden floors, but don't get me started on that one! Enjoy the best of Bilbao from this great hotel, including sunset shots of the Gug Museum from the rooftop, free apples at the gym that also overlooks the museum and great bath & shower design of executive rooms, to name just a few!

We choose a room with a view of the gugenheim. (Highly recommended) The rooms are spacious and comfortable. Lovely design to complement the gugenheim. Staff very friendly and helpful. Great breakfast on the terrace with view of the gugenheim.
Unbeatable

A truly magnificent hotel......from the moment you set foot in it you can only marvel at the surroundings. Having said that its not stuffy or smug - it genuinely is a good place to be with a warm atmosphere. We had the breakfast on the terrace which was awesome if a little pricey...also ate in the cafe which was great and had cocktails in the lounge - which has just the coolest decor...The staff could not be more helpful and the location is second to none - we walked everywhere in this compact, fascinating and family-friendly city.

Hotel was great. bathtub in the center of the room was a huge plus. staff very helpful with excellent restauarant res. but the crowning part was the hip breakfast room with an incredible view of the hotel. Buffet breakfast, not included was well worth the money for the view.

My partner and I stayed here after finding an excellent deal at activehotels. After a lifetime of budget travel I thought we might as well try the five star, and was expecting something fairly up-market: however, this hotel was far beyond any of my expectations.
The atrium is stunning, with a glass elevator rising up past a blue sculpted centrepiece: the staff are friendly and professional: the restaurant serves great food. We had a room looking onto the Guggenheim, which was absolutely wonderful: just perfectly made - wonderful attention to detail - deep, luxurious bath, soft bath towels, CD player, individual aircon, etc etc. The staff also personalise each visit: we would return in the evening to find chocolates, and little keepsakes on the freshly made bed. The breakfasts were delicious too: fresh fruit, yoghurt, local meats and you eat on the roof overlooking Frank Gehry's unbelievable building, with views of the hills that rise up aorund Bilbao.

We stayed here in May 2004 and had a great time. We had dinner at the hotel restaurant (Beltz the Black) and it was fantastic, try one of the tasting menus - we did and had a truly delicious meal.
When you reserve try to get a room overlooking the Guggenheim - the cheaper rooms have an interior view but if you don't mind that you will still be very happy. Our room (and I'm sure all the other rooms are equally as good if not better) was perfect - spacious, beautifully decorated and had a lovely bathroom with a fabulous free-standing bath and decked shower area. Big fluffy robes and slippers and good toiletries were provided.
The beds were superb, comfortable and with the nicest Egyptian cotton sheets I've ever slept in.
You will not be disappointed with this hotel - it's chic, stylish, modern, comfortable, perfectly located for the Guggenheim and has a lovely rooftop terrace, a very pleasant cafe and a very good restaurant. The bar is nice too, good music but it could have been fractionally quieter!!! Great drinks, and excellent service.

Whilst in Bilbao make sure that you head into the town centre too, it's really pleasant in the evening and the old town across the river is quite nice to explore. Also a day trip to San Sebastian is worthwhile - it's a lovely old seaside town with a great beach, about an hour and a half on the bus from the main bus station in Bilbao.

This hotel simply knocks your socks off (english vernacular for saying it's mindblowingly good!). Located next to the Guggenheim museum so slightly out of the way from all the town action, but for contemporary style and good unobtrusive service I can't fault it. As a base for a weekend jaunt to Bilbao (for which the Guggenheim has to be the principal reason) it's unbeatable. Not cheap, but we got a great weekend deal through Expedia.

Movies All local cinemas show all movies in Spanish or Bask only, no original language showing. Also VERY disturbing trying to go to TRIPADVISOR and being redirected in spanish, no explanation.Difficult if you do not speak Spanish
Breakfast in the Gran Domaine It's not cheap but it represents great value considering what you get
Flights One of the attractions of this break was that we managed to get cheap flights to Santander which is about an hours drive from Bilbao, but hiring a car still worked out to be cheaper than flying direct to Bilbao, plus it gave us the opportunity to see more of this part of Northern Spain which was great.
