This hotel seemed perfect at first. It is less than a minute away from Las Rambla. And about a 15 minute walk to the beach. I was impressed by the history and the architecture of the building. The rooms were very basic, but we only planned for using them to sleep. The cleaning staff were quite inconsiderate - even when you had the 'Do not disturb' sign on the door. They would still come in. One morning we woke to find that the door had been opened and left opened! What was far worse was that my purse was also stolen from my hotel room! I had been pre-warned about the muggings and thefts that take place in Las Rambla, so I took precaution by leaving my purse in my room and only carrying my bank card and money with me. I've emailed the hotel. They might as well have been politicians as they avoided answering the question. I emailed them back trying to get an answer and I have heard nothing. It has now been over a month. If you go there, take your belongings with you, as it seems to be safer outside rather than inside.

After reading several bad reviews about this hotel we feel we must put other travellers minds at ease about the Espana. Situated approximately 2 minutes off the Ramblas the hotel is very nice and clean with fresh towels and bedding every day. The breakfast was continental buffet style which was very good. The staff were very friendly and helpful and we would not hestiate to stay at the Espana again when we next visit the beautiful city of Barcelona.

I don't know why this hotel has such a low rating! Its location is great, a stones throw off Los Ramblos. The hotel is having an external face-lift so don't be put off by the scaffolding on the outside. If you want a glossy, glitzy hotel then don't choose this one. It is full of character and charm. The room we had was QUIET, clean and perfectly adequate for a three-night stay. For the price you pay it represents great value for money. Our room had a TV, air conditioning (essential) and a safe. (A deposit of 25 euro's and 2.50 euro's a day. This includes loss insurance!) The hotel was full when we stayed and we didn't experience any noise. We came in late most nights and the hotel was quiet. The staff were friendly and helpful. They have a room to leave your baggage in after check out if you have a late flight home. The breakfast was continental (of course!) Buffet style, as much as you can eat. I would definitely recommend this hotel and would stay there again myself. Don't be put off by other bad reviews. Remember that some people only leave reviews when they have negative things to say!!!!!

I had my laptop PC and Passport stolen from my room in the Espana Hotel. The door was locked and the key left at reception while I was out for the evening. My room door had not been forced and two other guests had items stolen from their rooms on the same night (3rd October 06) in similar circumstances. Looked like it was an "inside job". Be warned, if you stay here do not leave any valuables in your room or leave your key at reception.

Stayed here with my boyfriend in a mixed group of 10. We were on the 3rd floor, I believe the rooms get worse the higher you are but ours was fine.. Nice size, clean and nice bathroom. Only problem was our 'double bed' was two singles pushed together, none of our friends had this. If it happens to you I would ask to swtich rooms.
Great location just beware of the prostitutes and groups of dodgy men if walking back past La Ramblas after about midnight when the restaurants on there are closed. Quite scary at times, I wouldn't attempt it in a couple or group of only girls. The males in our group didn't stop us being shouted to and grabbed at but they certainly helped.
Overall I would rate this hotel highly. The price was reasonable. I didn't try the food though. My only complaint is that the hotel tried to charge us for a breakfast each which we had not eaten. 10 people is a large number to make a mistake over and I think they were trying to scam us. Only after much argument did they back down. Apart from that a problem free stay.

We visited Barcelona in March 05 for 4 days. The hotel had been selected basically because it has been offered by EasyJet in combination with the flight that we had booked. I guess it was a mistake to follow the EasyJet recommendation, because a lot of people whos trying to squeeze the max out of his budget will probably end up there. It turned out that the hotel was full of drunken Enghlish teens, who sang and slammed doors all night; well Easyjet is an U.K. based carrier
The hotel itself was once a nice upper class hotel but it has come down to a level that is in my opinion fair below two stars. It seems there are some good rooms but the major part is really in bad shape. Without exaggerations: Our room looked like a youth hostel, that had not seen renovation in the last 30 years. The bedding looked the same age. Good about the hotel is only the very central location and in our case that the beer vending machine was out-of-order at least for two nights.
