Excellent Room, Friendly Staff.

Tube station 5 yards from front door, very handy. Staff were all friendly and helpful, breakfasts had just about everything. Double bed was huge, packed fridge, big room, looked new, few minutes walk from La Rambla, 10 minutes (easy walk) from the Marina and associated restaurants. Would use this hotel again.

This is a modern hotel, that is located close to the Las Ramblas and the harbor area. Our room was spacious and nicely furnished. The staff was helpful, however we encountered a problem at checkout. We had booked the rooms to include breakfast through hotels.com, but the hotel charged us for breakfast. The desk clerk said they did not have a record that indicated breakfast was included and said they had experienced the same problems with guests who had made their reservations with hotel.com. The clerk asked for a printout of the email confirmation, but unfortunately, we did not have it. We paid the charges and are trying to resolve this problem with hotels.com.

Excellent Service

We stayed here for 3 nights with a 16 month old baby and were a bit apprehensive about having a baby in a hotel room for 3 nights. The staff however could not have been more helpful with heating baby food etc. Apart from this the hotel is well situated close but not on Las Ramblas and is well within walking distance of most attractions. The roof top pool is a must to coll down in the evenings or to get the last bit of the sun.

Great short break hotel

Just returned from 5 day break staying at the Barcelona Universal Hotel with 4 friends (all over 40!) Our rooms were spotlessly clean and staff were very friendly and helpful. We loved the substantial breakfast - chocolate cheesecake for breakfast was a first!
On the roof there is a VERY small pool and a few loungers for relaxing after a long day sightseeing, with fabulous views of the city.
Only 10 mins walk from Ramblas though the walk there seemed to pass the edge of the red light district but a metro station outside the front door made travel easy.
We got 2 day tickets for the tourist bus which covers all the main attractions and gives you a book of tickets for discounted entrance to most museums and galleries. We had a brilliant time and would definately use this hotel again. We booked through octopus travel.com and got a good deal.

This is a great hotel, modern rooms, huge beds, our room was larger than average, with a walk-in area and great views.Nice bars and restaurants near the hotel which serve til 3am, a metro right outside, or if you prefer to walk, it's only 10 mins to the Ramblas.Rooftop pool area was nice with great views.Staff were very helpful and courteous.Pricewise, we felt guilty about paying so little - 100 Euro per room per night - that's how good this place is.Will definitely return.

Stayed at the Universal at the beginning of May for 3 nights and loved it! The location is ideal - you literally walk out of the front door of the hotel and the metro station is at your feet. My only advice is to mind the hours of the metro, as the system in Barcelona seems to close earlier than other cities across Europe. The room was very nice - no view to speak of, but again, the location is unbeatable!! FYI - cab fare from the airport should run you about 15 euros - plus any extras for baggage and passengers (which the cab drivers in Barcelona are more than happy to tack onto your fare!!).

We stayed at this hotel after booking out of the absolutely disgraceful "Millenium" Best Western hotel just around the corner. It was as if we'd moved to a different planet in comparison. Clean, modern rooms, Aircon, pleasant, friendly staff.

I highly recommend it, as for the Millenium - sleep in the street first!

7 min to the ramblas and modern!

Very modern and highly comfortable hotel. Only around 5 or 6 min walk to the Ramblas, and in case you feel lazy, it's literally 30 seconds from a convenient metro station called Parallel. The room was very modern and very clean. The front desk staff were incredibly helpful and multilingual!

The only minor negative was that they wouldn't provide an iron to the room! They refused on 'safety' grounds, and asked us to use the rather expensive hotel ironing service. So - take a travel iron with you!!!

I stayed in this hotel after reading the reviews. I have just come back from three nights taking my mum and sister. They are very critical, so this is an honest review.

Hotel - location: excellent, you can take a 10 minute walk to Las Ramblas, or the hotel is right outside the green line tube which can take you all over the city. Taxis are cheap anyway. Convenient to get to main train station to get to the airport too.

standard: good, clean rooms - we wanted three single beds but had to share one double though but got a sofa bed made up. The beds were very comfortable. Great big bathroom with two showers!

Staff: very friendly indeed, especailly bar staff

Food: didn't want to eat at the hotel as breakfast was way over the top (i.e. expensive) - we walked two minutes to the left of the hotel to Cafe International and had some great, big breakfasts for only 5 euros. Much better value! Try and speak some some spanish with he waited though - they work very hard.

The main road outside is very, very busy at night with traffic so you can't sleep with the window open but they have very good air-co anyway.

I would stay again - but as I took my mum, I wanted a hotel that was slightly more expensive than I might usually choose..

Modern, clean, rooms are more than reasonable in size and equipment, stuff always willing to help. Breakfast is very good and rich, though service in dining room needs more help. Two internet stations on the 9'th floor are usually free. Subway station right at the hotel saves time and money.Dinner is great for a very reasonable price if you look for a quiet romantic one, that leads you straight to your room for further activities...We stayed for 6 nights and loved every minute.

Statyed here in September 2003. Great location...less than 10 minute walk to Las Ramblas. Metro right outside the door for anything further afield. Pool on roof is small but nice and the view is great. A little on the expensive side but worth it. Will stay again. Only problem was the UK Stag party that was there for the night of our stay. Not the hotels fault but it's obviously a popular spot.

Top Local Tips for Barcelona

Be Aware of Scam artists Beware of scam artists. Keep your bag/wallet close with you at all times and do not engage with people you don't know unless you are positive that they are fellow tourists. There appers to several pickpockets throughout barcelona or individual looking to scam you. Keep your witts about you and there you should have no problems. The area around El Rival is a little seedy and be wiery of what streets you walk in this district and myself & my friend found ourselves walking in some of these streets and this was the only time we felt uneasy in Barcelona - there was mainly only men and not of a savory nature - These areas should definately be avoided at night

watch your pockets dont play any games,like the one where they hide a ball under match boxes,or buy flowers from people walking around on la ramblas as they are gypsies and will pick your pockets in seconds

Barcelona subway #1 place in Europe for pickpockets. Couldn't happen to me, right? Wrong. Just felt some shoving pressure from a crowd boarding the car & gone. Thank goodness I was using my "decoy" wallet with only a modest amount of cash & some expired cards to make it look real.
