Being pleasantly satisfied during my prior four-night visit, 2004 marked my second stay at the Catalonia Princesa Hotel in Barcelona, Spain. Centrally located near Barcelona's Arc de Triomf, the Catalonia Princesa is an easy walk to such Barcelona highlights as the Parc de la Ciutadella, Sagrada Familia, La Rambla, the Catedral Barri Gotic, and the waterfront/port. In addition, several subway stations are in close proximity to the property. Despite its proximity to the hustle and bustle of Barcelona's heart, the Catalonia Princesa Hotel is located on a quiet, one-way street. Although housed in an historic-era structure, the Catalonia Princesa is a thoroughly modern, updated property which opened in the early 2000s. What it lacks in old world charm and elegance it more than compensates for in its modern simplicity. The guest rooms are adequately sized, but the bathrooms are super-sized, an uncommon perk for any European hotel. While a modicum of rooms front the street, most guest rooms face a rather non-descript courtyard. However mundane and "viewless" the courtyard may be, it nonetheless assures guests the comfort of an undisturbed sleep. Guest rooms are outfitted with air conditioning, private baths, Internet access, cable television, telephones, and a clock. The Catalonia Princesa has an on-site restaurant which serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner as well as a small bar/lounge. The front desk is staffed 24/7 with multilingual (including English), friendly and helpful clerks. The staff is incredible! Although subject to availability, I was pleasantly surprised to find my room ready upon my 8:00 a.m. arrival. On the evening preceding my early departure, I accidentally left the guest room phone off the hook, rendering my requested early wake-up call undeliverable. Realizing the problem, the front desk sent a staffer to knock on my door at the requested time. In addition, upon checking out, the taxi I had requested the evening before was outside waiting for me. It is rare to find such a conscientious staff in a mid-priced hotel property. The Catalonia Princesa will be my first choice property during my next visit to Barcelona.

The hotel combines a good mix of contemporary modern style along with character. Its clean and fresh with helpful staff. The rooms may be a little stark for some but executed in a clean and uncluttered style. It is ideally situated in the older part of the city not far from the cathedral and the Ramblas but with good access to the metro system for venturing further afield.

The hotel is a very good choice for a leisure traveller. The room had all that was needed, the breakfast was good and the location is quiet. It is an asset that you can walk to and from Ramblas. What I missed was to be located in an area with cafes and local restaurants. It is not always convenient to eat at the hotel, and as a Norwegian I am not used to big dinners late at night. So either a cafe at the hotel or some alternatives near the hotel would have been appreciated. But all in all the stay was successful, and I would like to come back.

I read some contradictions about this hotel. Since it is close to the gotic area some people might have felt insecure at night. The contrary - it is a nice and bright hotel with a good price/quality relation. Close to the metro of the Arc the Triomph - it is central.
