Top Local Tips for Barcelona
Visit the Gaudi House - Casa Batllo One of Gaudi's most famous houses - Cata Battlo, (www.casabattlo.es) is now open for visitors. This house is on Passieg de Gracia and for 16 Euros, you get nearly 2 hours of architectural heaven, visiting the ground, first and second floors, the stairwells and the attics and roof. IT's not yet in many of the guidebooks - so the queues are half that of La Pedrera - on the opposite side up the road. But it will absolutely make your day, if not your holiday for the incredible design, architecture and inspiration it displays. The audio tour really helps you make the most of your visit and it ends on the roof, behind the dragon-tiled roof, with views over the rooftops of Barcelona. Our kids - 9. 10 and 12, loved it too.
Jardim del Laberint d'Horta This is must-see park just north of Park Guell heading up the mountain. I walked up, which was a long hike, but definitely worth it. The gardens are well kept, maintaining what one can only imagine was the original integrity of the landscape. The labyrinth is fun, and deceptively complicated. During my visit, there were very few visitors, and many seemed to be locals. There is a metro station just at the base of the complex, a short walk through the football pitches, and is well worth the journey.
Barcelona Card and Metro The 1, 2, or 3 day option only refers to the Metro portion of it. You will get a book of coupons and a separate metro card. Once you use the metro card, it marks that as your first Metro day. For example I bought a 3 day card, and the Metro runs until 2am on "Saturday nights" (which is technically Sunday). I first used the card at 1am on Sunday, which is actually a "Saturday" in the metro system. So, I wasted the entire first day of Metro use because it thought the first day of use was a Metro Saturday. Anyway, my suggestion is.. buy a 1 day Barcelona card (because you will get a book of tickets that do not expire) and then use the metro for a day. Then, purchase a 10 ride metro pass if you want to continue using the metro. Oh, and the Metro card does NOT apply on Night Buses. They didn't tell me that at the tourist info center.
