Top Local Tips for Alicante
Great food Underneath the Melia hotel is a restuarant called SPERANTTO. It has a fantastic location overlooking the sea, and we went there for an evening meal. For 25 euros each, we had a meal consisting of 3 different starters each (fabulous mushroom salad - and I don't eat salads!), followed by a choice of main course (husband had fish, I had steak, both delicious) and rounded off by 2 different desserts to share. The price also included a drink each (beer for him, wine for me) plus live music and a guy going around the tables doing amusing card tricks. It was a lovely evening; the restuarant was frequented mostly by locals (including a birthday party for the daughter of the chef), and when we left at 2am people were still arriving for drinks.

The hotel itself is clean and tidy, bathrooms are in marble and very spacious with an easy to use, powerful shower/bath combo. The room includes a fair sized TV (only offering one English speaking channel, CNN), mini-bar (of good size with room enough to store your own drinks) and air-conditioning (very effective). The gym is very basic (a cheap exercise bike, step machine, multi-gym and sit-up bench) and the sauna is small (no more than 2 people at a time!) but does it's job. My room didnt have a balcony but there is a terrace on the 6th floor with stunning views over the square. I didnt eat at the hotel during my stay but the bar/restaurant area looked clean. There are more than enough restaurants throughout Alicante to eat in so even if the hotel food was bad there is no need for alarm. I would recommend this hotel and location to a couple who want nothing more than good food, a beach and relaxing holiday. If you are looking for rowdy nightlife then maybe a trip to Benidorm would suit you better.
