Top Local Tips for Saint Petersburg

Guide experience Because of both language and alphabet gaps (and due to the crime risk), we engaged a guide. We're happy with our guide, Julia Ivanushkina (http://www.spbwondertour.com) She arranged airport transfers, hotel invitation letters (in our case, she just made a phone call for us, but she can also handle the entire lengthy complex process for you), and provided a very comfortable van for our touring. It was particularly interesting to drive to Peterhof, with a narration on both the war/'900 day siege" and modern life in the suburbs. Her English and her knowledge is excellent, and we had a good time. At EUR 35/hour, she's not the cheapest guide (Airport transfers were EUR 30). One recommendation for any guide: Make sure you ask ahead of time how much cash you will need for that day's museum admissions. Some of the museums are surprisingly expensive, and it would have been easy to run out of cash.

Walking, boat trips, opening hours The city centre is relatively small, and most places in the centre are reachble by walking if you are living in a city centre hotel. Boat trips are great for getting an overview of the city, but if you want one with an English guide you will almost definitely have to book it in advance. Most trips with English guides seems to be around 4pm. Going by boat is also recommended if you are going to Peterhof. Going by car can often take long time due to traffic, but by boat the triip only takes about half an hour. Most attractions are clsoe at least one day a week, even in the peak tourist season, so take that into account when planning your activities.

Canal rides, and museums, and bears, oh my. It's true about the cabs - unless it is a metered taxi, I speak Russian and all that meant was that I could argue. Public transit is pretty easy, so give it a try. And do go on a canal boat for orientation and overview of the city, and while walking around look for the Lenin lived here plaques. Cheap dining deals can be found in local restaurants frequented by Russians. Look for them in store fronts on the main drags. Do go into the parks, (you might get to pet a trained Russian bear) walk on the side streets, and try to get to at least one Great Patriotic War Memorial - Leningrad survived a 900 day siege by the German's and a blockade which resulted in the deaths of more than 1 milliion citizens, most of whom starved to death. Composer Dmitri Shostakovich stayed there throughout the Siege, holding concerts, and composing a symphony. The main memorial to the Siege includes a museum with his violin. Soviets used to leave flowers in tribute, young Russians don't seem to care.
