Stayed there twice while on business. At that time it was well off the beaten track of westerners, trying hard and the staff as helpful as circumstances allowed. Dinner not brilliant, the Romanian wine some compensation. Bed a bit hard. Music quite bizarre- he played really good piano jazz/blues, she seemed to be studying for Grade 1 for the tenth time (British readers may recall 'Singalonga Les Dawson'. She was better, meaning worse). Which gave one something to think about). Galati is probably not first choice for tourists, which is a pity. Not much architecture (bombed flat by the west to facilitate the advance of the Red Army), but a magnificent setting alongside the Danube, looking into Ukraine and across to the Dobruj- don't know why, but Bradbury's 'Martian Chronicles' kept coming into my mind. Try the morning train to Iasi- if you go in spring you may coincide with the migrating storks and cranes.

Do visit Braila as well The two towns are adjacent (16kms) and rivals. Braila is pretty and is being restored using EU funding. Galati has international commercial and academic links and could be great if only there was an international airport rather than a long train ride.
