Top Local Tips for Porto

River Douro by boat and train There is a boat trip up the River Douro lasting most of the day, including breakfast and lunch on the boat, returning by train. If you can't get on the boat, go by train to Pinhao. This is unspectacular for the first hour, but then follows the river. At Pinhao, there is a first class hotel and restaurant, the Vintage House Hotel, or you can eat in one of the typical cafe restaurants. NOTE - when travelling by train, ALWAYS GO FIRST CLASS. This is not expensive, but you will not enjoy the hard second class seats!

Great Hotel in a great location with a great price I wish WIFI were free, but it is not.

Extra charges Be careful when you go to a restaurant especially near the river. Some of the bars charge a lot for what you get. I had a mixed tapas that was omly a few pieces of cheese and ham, similar to what I had for breakfast. Also the restaurants put bread, butter and something else like cheese or ham on the table. You might be tempted to think this is a free offering, but is isn't. Everything is charged for separately.
