Top Local Tips for Porto

Where are the bars in Porto? I would like to correct someone's review about Rua Santa Cateruina being the place to bar hop in Porto. Unless you have very long legs, there is only one bar on Rua Santa Caterina and on a Saturdya night it is a deserted street! Much better to head down to Ribeira, by the river where there are lots of cosy bars. If you are a smoker, there are some bars that despite the smoking ban, have indoor smoking areas! Another riview I read on here mentionned the Ribeira de Canastra restaurant, I don't know why as it was overpriced, slow service and not very good food. They bring you little 'tapas', olives, bread, some cheeses and pates. Beware, you will have to pay for everything you eat of the tapas, they are not free! Apart from this, Porto is a gorgeous city and seeing the river and all the Port signs lit up over the bridge at night is a must!

Port Houses, Cathedral, Boat Cruise and Ribeiro District Do not miss out on a trip to the port houses in the Gaia area, and I would suggest visiting the Spanish or Portuguese houses, and avoid the English ones such as Offley and Croft. If you like architecture, it is definitely worth tracking down some of the Azuelos (the blue tiles that Portugal is known for), one specific example is the station at Sao Bento - incredibly interesting - and the cloisters at Se Cathedral. A boat trip up the Duoro river is a must - we prebooked an all day excursion which included breakfast, lunch and a few port tastings along the way. A day well spent. Also if time, use the funicular from the bridge to the main part of town to avoid climbing all those stairs and cobbled streets. A lovely view from car. When dining out, ask for the Portuguese menu as the English menu does not have a lot of things that are on the local menu, and you will be surprised by the dishes you will experience.

Using the metro The journey to and from the airport is easy using the metro. The station is right next to the exit from the airport, English-speaking staff are on hand to help you to get the ticket from the machine (although you can get a display in English) and the cost of 1.95 Euros is cheap. Just beware of trying to use a 20 Euro note first thing in the morning as the machines are emptied of change. The Porto vintage bus service offers three tours on a 10 Euro ticket. This allows as many journeys as you please in 24 hours and is a great way of getting your bearings in this complex city. A day's cruise down the Douro is highy recommended, especially for the 35 metre lock to bypass one of the dams. We used the Via Douro company and the cost of 53 Euros was great value for money for a ten hour excursion. Note that the charges go up at weekends to 75 to 80+ Euros so try going on a weekday.
