Comfortable not glitzy luxury

from LovelyDevon
It was because of other high rated reviews here that we decided to go to Cliff Bay last week - we were not disappointed. The hotel has an excellent location and lovely staff - they don't fawn over you - just friendly help if needed.

My husband is vegetarian and had been expecting the worst as usual in Med countries - however Cliff Bay had a nightly buffet which always included lots of veggie stuff but particularly a dish of the day which was always interesting, tasty and (more importantly) contained protein which a lot of veggie chefs dont do. It was so good that we ate there 4 nights out of 7.

If I had a (very slight) criticism it is that the hotel is now somewhat showing its age. It is comfortable luxury (which I prefer) rather than glittery luxury but it has been going 10 years and probably now needs a few extra touches to buff it up.

I was told that at Xmas and New Year more than half the occupants were returnees. I was about to say that the hotel is biased towards the older age group. Indeed they form the majority but there were also quite a few young couples with (very young) children (i.e. less than 2 years old). We had a babychild next door but could not hear it at all through the walls even though we could hear it crying in the hallway.

A good recommendation

I was recommended to stay at this hotel by a friend of a collegue. I have never been to Madeira before so decided to take their advice when I went on the 7th November for a short break holiday for 1 week. What a pleasant surprise. This was certainly one of the best hotels I have stayed at. Room was huge with two large double beds. Breakfasts were exceptional and I would be very surprised if anybody needed to eat again before the evening. Staff were courteous and efficient. Meals in the Hotel were good but I would recommend visitors to try other restaurants on the island as well. I hired a car and found most roads easy to navigate once outside Funchal. The island seems to be honeycombed with tunnels but you do need to find some of the old roads if you really want to see more of the island.

Critical view

We booked a late deal and were meant to be staying at the Eden Marr hotel. Cost of cab to hotel 33 Euros plus tip (35 E)When we arrived we were told they were full and we were being moved and upgraded to another hotel, they paid the cab for the 200m journey and we arrived at the Cliff Bay. WOW...
The good points....
Staff are friendly, its very clean, the mini bar is well stocked, the rooms are HUGE!!! we had not one but two 6 feet (2m) wide beds..The bathroom had 2 sinks, wc, bidet, bath, shower, electric hair dryer.
Room opened out onto a sea view, we didnt pay extra but would have done so if asked it was that good. The bedroom was a smoking room but you couldnt tell. Bathrobe, slippers, beds turned down every evening with a chocolate on the pillow. Had a birthday whilst there and found a cake with card in room, great touch.
There is free broadband internet in reception but theres only 1 computer and your limited to 30 mins use.
The gym is fantastic, good steam room, sauna, indoor pool that goes through an opening into the outdoors. There is a lift to the huge pool by the sea...no beach and its all black rock anyway. Good spa and massage services.
Without doubt one of the best items was breakfast, everything you could desire including champagne!! freshly squeezed fruit juice, cerials, bacon, eggs etc etc etc..
Points to remember....its a very nice 5 star hotel, as such drinks, meals and snacks are not cheap, some of the restaurants require a jacket, others just require a shirt and tie, price of meal for 2 about 120 Euros inc wine.
Annoying bits....well not a lot to be honest apart from price of meals/drinks...we had some building work going on whilst we were there (1st week Nov 05), so a mid day rest was impossible.
At the end of the hotel drive is a nice restaurant, a trip into town 5 Euros has all the Pizza Hut type places, or by the port there are nice pavement restaurants.
The Botanical gardens are worth a visit, cost to get there is 25 Euros round trip and the cab driver will wait about 1 and a half hours for you which was about right...entry is 3 Euros each..DONT bother with the Orchid centre just down the road, 5 Euros each to get in and it only lasts about 15 mins if that.
Try the market in the town for fresh fruit and plants.
Just remember one thing about Madeira its a great place to rest and unwind, but not much more..

Best Hotel in Madeira

from Moriarity
My girlfriend and I have stayed at the Cliff Bay two years' running - and we shall be returning every year that we can. We are not the type of people who settle to one location year in year out, but after our first visit to the Cliff Bay in 2004 we have decided that, wherever else we go in the world, we will always have a week here.

Everything about this hotel is top class; the location is superb, overlooking Funchal Bay and 20 minutes walk into town; the public rooms are large and airy and absolutely spotless; the grounds are beautifully maintained and a pleasure to view; the pools are excellent, the saltwater one being ideally situated and there is a jetty for sea swimming. The inside/outside pool has a small cafe and is the ideal place to relax without fear of sunburn. The spa is simply magnificent and, in terms of hygiene, could probably put many hospitals to shame. Try one of the treatments - you will not be disappointed.

The rooms are large and beautifully appointed and, whether a garden view or sea view, have a pleasant aspect. Both the Blue Lagoon restaurant and the Rose Garden buffet restaurant are excellent, although we found the Italian restaurant, whilst pleasant enough, to be lacking in atmosphere. (Try the Red Lion in Funchal, a fun, relaxed restaurant with an interesting menu and entertainment at the weekend). The staff are truly excellent and nothing is too much trouble. In fact I was informed in an unsolicited comment by a staff member that Porto Bay Hotel Group is a very good company to work for and looks after its staff, another good reason to stay there. (It does concern me that hotel staff are not being polite merely out of fear of instant dismissal). The bar is also very pleasant, with live entertainment most nights.

The Cliff Bay is ideal for couples seeking complete relaxation. In fact, one could spend a whole week in the hotel without feeling the need to venture outside. (A warning to those seeking beaches, children's entertainment and a wild nightlife - you will not get them in Madeira). The scenery is beautiful, the climate temperate and the people friendly. The new museum is excellent and incorporates the latest techniques in museum displays, it is well worth a visit. A few points need to be made e.g. Madeira is volcanic and the walk to the road from the Cliff Bay is steep, especially so for the elderly. However, there is always a taxi rank immediately outside the hotel and a journey to Funchal is 5 Euros including the tip, so don't be put off. The town centre is flat and contains many restaurants and the cable car to Monte, as well as a couple of museums, so it is worth visiting. Madeira is lovely for a low key, relaxing holiday and the Cliff Bay is the best place to enjoy it.

fantastic - ultimate luxury

from Justine4
What a hotel. We stayed for a week in may. Ultimate luxury from start to finish. A quiet hotel, where you can keep yourself to yourself, place to get away from everything and have a complete break. we booked late and got a garden facing room, which we were disappointed with at first, although with the fantastic spa and lush gardens and several pool areas we really only went to our room to sleep . It may be nice to have a balcony that faces the sea, in my opinion, save the money of the upgrade and use it to treat yourselves in the spa when you get there. The spa is fantastic and not too expensive, if you go on the guided tour you get an introductory voucher with money off a treatment, well worth it to get you relaxed at the beginning of the holiday. bath robes are provided and you can access the spa from all levels without walking through the main hotel- it feels very much like a health spa in that respect .Despite the size of the hotel, there never seemed to be anyone around, no getting up at 6 am to save the sun loungers!, there is plenty of room for everyone which gives it that exclusive feeling. The dining is fantastic, although a little pricey, if you don’t want to eat in the hotel every night there are plenty of cheap but nice restaurants around and its only a 20min walk into town. The breakfasts -are fantastic more food than you can eat! The bar is just the place to enjoy and early evening drink and with a happy hour the cocktails are very reasonable. The service is out of this world, nothing was too much trouble. I will return. I don’t have a bad word to say about the hotel and would definitely recommend it.

Honeymoon delight

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I spent our honeymoon there with our infant daughter. The hotel is in a beautiful location and the rooms are immaculate with plenty of room. The food is excellent, in particular the breakfast choice is exceptional. The dinner menu's are high quality but like every restaurant in Madeira, they focus on fish but do no cater for vegetarians. The staff are very helpful and bend over backwards to make sure you don't expend to much energy on anything other than relaxing. The hotel is quiet, like much of Madeira and there aren't many children, but the facilities are present for kids. The diving centre was very professional. Most people we met had been there before or were regular visitors and we will certainly be going back.

One of the best

from NeilofMarlow2
Overall this is one of the finest hotels we have stayed at. It is fanatically clean and the rooms are excellent many with terrific views over Funchal. All rooms seem to have a balcony. The staff are very very polite and helpful.

The food is is of a high standard but we would recommend going out to one of the many excellent restaurants in Funchal for a bit of variety - Quintas Primera is very good. If you don't like "being involved" in the entertainment, miss out "Portugese night" in the restaraunt.

Breakfast is not to be missed. Fantastic choice and quality.

The hotel has two pools - both are exceptionally clean and well maintained.

We were put off Madeira a bit by every one telling us that their parents had been there - we expected to be the youngest people on the island. Not the case though....we were there in July/August 2005 and there were plenty of younger couples and families.

Madeira has a lot going for it and it is easy to get about. Driving is hassle free and other drivers even acknowledge polite driving.

Second time around

from A TripAdvisor Member
We have just returned from yet another marvellous week at the Cliff Bay Hotel - service as excellent as ever, high quality surroundings and standards to match - nothing is too much trouble. The Hotel is such a peaceful oasis with wonderful views, facilities and food. It is a place to unwind and be spoilt. The welcome we received on our return to the Hotel together with the special treatment/facilities shown to returning guests was second to none - well done to all who manage and work in the Hotel - you certainly know how to treat your guests - thank you.

Our vote for best hotel in Funchal

from abingdon
A really excellent hotel from the first moment of arrival, the rooms were in first class condition, the staff were helpful and friendly, and the outside area was beautiful and well maintained. Even though this isn't a "suite hotel" the rooms were large enough to (nearly) qualify. All rooms have a balcony, I believe, and even the ones facing the back are very pleasant.

We had thought of saving our pennies to stay at Reids. After visiting there for cocktails (it's a five minute wallk away) we were immensely happy we had chosen this better hotel.

Because we did so much diligence to research the hotel (as we had never been to Madeira before) we dropped in to other hotels to compare - there was no comparison. Savoy, Royal Savoy, whatever ... the clear winner is this one.

We have stayed in this hotel every year since it opened and have never yet found another to come up to its standards. The staff are so helpful and go out of their way to make you feel special. The facilities and ambience are second to none and any fault is dealt with immediately. We are returning again in September and feel that we are going home to the Cliff Bay.
