Great for families, excellent facilities and locationfrom KiwinycLondon_UK
All the rooms also have balcony’s and sea views and the hotel is in a large resort complex called Porto Bay which is attached to and shares facilities with a newer hotel called Porto Mare. We didn’t feel like poor cousins though, as all the facilities for both hotels were available to us, including a well-stocked indoor playroom with all new toys which also had 4 bouncy chairs to borrow if you have a baby and a outdoor playground, although the latter would only be suitable for older toddlers.
There are also two large indoor swimming pools (and two outdoor, including two outdoor childrens pools, heated) We used the indoor ones everyday, the large free-form one was heated to 28 degrees and was fabulous to swim in, the only hassle was that it was 1.5m deep and I am only 1.55cm tall so my husband had to swim with our daughter as I couldn’t put my feet on the bottom without drowning!
The weather was ok – it averages about 19-20 degrees there at that time of year. It was sunny/cloudy while we were there, when the sun shone it felt very warm indeed, hot enough to sunbathe but it just wasn’t reliable enough to do all day. As I said the hotel facilities were great, and the staff were absolutely lovely, always helpful and gave our daughter lots of attention. On her birthday while there they sent up a bottle of champagne and chocolates to our room, and at dinner with no notice at all they rustled up a delicious beautifully decorated chocolate mousse cake with candles all completely free.
It is about a 25 min walk from the hotel into town where the shopping is (there’s a distinct ‘hotel zone’ where most of the hotels are situated to the west of the town center) and theres a nice park with a very good childrens playground half-way there which we tried once. The walk is mostly downhill but is not that pleasant because of the large number of cars and buses on the roads so we took the hotel shuttle bus the rest of the time. The shuttle also takes you to the terminus of the cable car which whizzes you up to an area above the city called Monte, we walked around some nice gardens up there, during the summer it would probably be lovely and cool and peaceful. We also visited the aquarium (quite small and contains a museum displaying large number of stuffed fish and birds), the botanical gardens (theres a large bird sanctuary there containing mostly parrots), and the Electricity Museum (Our daughter liked it as they have an interactive bit that she could throw switches and twiddle knobs in)
The rest of the time we hung around the hotel partaking of the playroom and playground, mini golf and swimming pool and found other amusements (i.e. a small pet tortoise in a quiet lawn area that G. discovered). I used the very nice spa and had a Decleor facial and v. nice pedicure at half the price it would cost here. Taxi’s and restaurants were also v. reasonably priced, and portion sizes generally huge. Half-priced Children-sized portions were readily available also, and our daughter was also free on every attraction we went on, the most expensive was the cable car at 14 euro’s roundtrip for the 15 min journey up and down. We ate at one of the Hotel restaurants on 3 nights, which had a all-you-can buffet every night at 22 euros a head, again our daughter was free. There is also a supermarket in the shopping complex next to the hotel where we bought bottled water, snacks, etc.
There are various tours outside of the city you can do, including Madeira tasting, mountain walks, dolphin and whale watching but we didn’t do any of these. It would be nice to hire a car and get out to see some of the countryside though, its very green and lush and full of flowers in the spring.
All in all we thought it was a great alternative for some winter sun to the Canaries – the Portuguese are great at hospitality, we thought we got great value for money for our holiday considering the standard of accommodation, facilities and service, and there was plenty to do outside of the resort. Oh and the place wasn’t completely full of disapproving blue rinses, there was a good mix of Brits, Germans, French and other Europeans and other families with children as well.
Fantastic location and facilitiesfrom redeye_uk
We had a small suite with kitchenette and lounge. Big fridge for all our food (which we bought at the supermarket under the hotel), and basic hobs were all you needed - with plates, pots etc all included. Bed was large with satellite TV in lounge and bedroom. Views were right over the sea, and you were not overlooking other buildings.
Breakfasts were just fantastic. Champagne, variety of fresh juices, plenty of fruit, cerials, meat / cheeses and of course cooked English. Plenty to keep you going if you are on your feet all day.
A selection of pools, indoor and out, some of which were ideal for children. They were all very clean. Plenty of sunbeds and nice green gardens to hide away in. Jaccuzi and saunas were free, with other on site facilities such as gym and kids golf.
We ate in the beautiful Restaurant Med in the hotel, and went back a on the last night it was so good. There are also plenty of great restaurnts close by, the best of which was the Italian on the street outside - you could get great food and beer for less that £10 each!
The staff were very knowledgeable and helpful.
when booking, we were considering cheaper hotels but decided to pay a little more to get this place. we are SO GLAD we did, because we had so much more space and peace compared to many of the other hotels in this area which overlook main roads, or are high rise blocks with no garden space.
Madeira is NOT EXPENSIVE, despite what many people say. If you eat in the hotels every night it'll cost, but there are so many good local places to eat for less than a tenner, and beer in the supermarket works out about £2.50 for six bottles of the lovely local Coral beer.
Relaxing breakfrom Cath999
Spacious, clean room with comfortable bed.
Only minor grouch - I chose the hotel because of the promised "kitchenette" - it would have been nice to have a microwave - or even a toaster - as well as the two rings.
But overall very good.
Absolutely Brilliant!from JT22
The Eden Mar is part of 3 adjoining hotels which means that there are a lot of facilities available. There are 4 restaurants in the hotel although we only tried the buffet restaurant which is great (especially for breakfast). The outdoor pools are truly beautiful with lots of quiet areas and a pool side bar which is relatively cheap.
All of the staff are very helpful and speak a variety of languages. The hotel is about a 25 minute walk from the centre of madeira but there is a courtesy bus service and taxis are quite cheap (max 4euros).
This was the first time that I visited Madeira and I enjoyed it. I was looking for a relaxing holiday with nice weather and good food and this is what I found. We didn't do many of the organised trips as we were only there for a week. We did do the cable car ride up to Monte which is highly recommended.
We recommend O Regional restaurant down in the old town and Solar do Ajuda near the hotel (try the steak on the stone!) Blandys wine lodge is also worth a visit if it is your first time in Madeira.
One of the best hotels I have stayed infrom Neez
Breakfast was great - loads of choice and never a problem getting a table or getting served with coffee which we have found is where a lot of hotels let themselves down. If the weather is good they set up the tables outside as well.
The hotel never seemed full either at breakfast or around the pool. Loads of sunbeds - never a problem getting one. Only slight niggle that there was no shade and umbrellas had to be paid for but only 1 euro per day. Great facilities as you can use the pools in the Vila Mare as well so there are 2 indoor and 2 outdoor to choose from and you can eat breakfast in either the Eden Mar or the Vila Mare.
We had a fabulous view from our room and spent many evenings drinking a glass of wine on our balcony watching the sunset. Bedding and towels regularly changed and pool towels provided. The hotel is in a quiet location away from the main road.
We loved Madeira and Funchal and thought this was one of the best hotels in the Hotel Zone. We walked into Funchal lots of times even though my husband has breathing difficulties his breathing was much better here even after climbing all the hills. The hotel runs a courtesy bus several times a day although not after 5pm but there are plenty of public buses which are very cheap.
You can eat out cheaply or expensively - lots of choice and some of the 3 course menus are very good value. Our favourite restaurant was Londres, Rua da Carreira, Funchal - Madeiran specialities that change daily. The staff are very helpful and will explain the dishes to you.
Even though the weather was unsettled at times it was comfortably warm day and night - we sat outside to eat for nearly every meal.
If you want to know which cruise ships are due to arrive each day go to the Cliff Bay Hotel as they post this info on a board in their reception each day.
You are likely to get stopped by people selling timeshare and they will tell you they are doing a survey for the one of the hotels or the tourist office but if you just say you're not interested and walk on they are not too pushy.
There is a small shopping centre next to the hotel which is good and the wine shop next to the hotel sells drinks at similar prices to the supermarket at the back of the shopping centre. There is also a new shopping centre called the Madeira Forum at the end of the Hotel Zone - turn left on the Estrada Monumental - about 20 -30 minutes walk or take a bus.
We travelled with First Choice and went on their trips to the West and East of the island and found these to be very good value and the guides excellent - very knowledgeable and proud of their country.
We would definitely go back to the Eden Mar.
Wonderful Vacation.from A TripAdvisor Member
Very spacious rooms, everything is kept clean, lots of pools of all sizes indoor and outdoor. Room includes a small kitchenette; perfect for small lunches on the balcony. The breakfast is generous and satisfies both the British and German tastes, to top it off it even includes the local champagne!
Very close to a lot of shops and restaurants. The new Forum Madeira is only a 15 minute walk. For those who want to go into the sea, the LIDO complex is next to the hotel. I preferred the less crowded Ponta Gorda complex.
Extra friendly staff who want to make sure you enjoy your stay. Also a children club with daily activities.
Most guests come from the UK and Germany add to the mix a few from Belgium and France.
One small negative, the wireless Internet offered by the hotel is of poor quality. The speed could be compared to a dial-up line. The PC offered by the hotel seemed to operate at a more reasonable speed.
We love you Eden Mar!from TKDJ
The hotel far far surpassed our expectations. friendly staff, massive clean and tasteful rooms, lovely views and great food. Madeira was wonderful too - We went as a group of 4 girls for a quiet relaxing holiday. Bars and restaurants were very good especially if you like seafood and nightlife (which you do have to look for and ask locals about) gets going on a Friday and saturday night: good places are Copacabana, Bar Theatro, Vespas, Jems Bar - we didn't stagger in til seven am on one day!! Shocking!!
Make sure you go on some walks up in the levadas. We went with a company called madeira explorers and enjoyed it so much we booked another day. The scenery is stunning and you get to swim under waterfalls and discover some amazing nature and wildlife.
It is also worth taking the ferry over to Porto Santo (even just for the day) The beach is sandy, and safe for swimming and with the atlantic breakers a really exhilarating experience - pack plenty of suncream - we all got scorched!

The staff were very helpfull and friendly.
The gardens in the hotel grounds were stunning.
The entertainment was excellent.
This hotel is one of the best placed hotels on the island and is very close to
There is a choice of 3 restaurants in the hotel, all equally good.
This place is best suited to couples although they have good child care facilitys in the hotel.
All in all just wonderful!
eden mar just one reason to visit Madeirafrom eyeman
The Eden Mar is brilliant infact the whole Vila Porto mare is a superb complex, it is not that big and as such is able to respond to very whim!
But just think, if it were fully booked, I don't think Madeira would disappoint,
they are such wonderful people, yes We are an industry to them, but they know how to treat us, we should respect that and enjoy what they offer. We've have some bad deals usually in the "big" hotels but we,ve had many more brilliant times and I thank Madeira for that.
There are many great places to stay!
Top Local Tips for Funchal
Timeshare Touts You will recognise them soon and can take avoiding action after a day or so. They can tell a new arrival at 25 paces and the best way is to keep going. Do not be taken in by the "hail fellow, well met, we are all UK citizens in a foreign land" type bonhomie. You will be offered a cheap trip or vouchers for a 90 min hard sell. Fine if you are really tight on funds I guess...
getting around Use local buses, regular, reliable and good value for money. Buy tickets at local shops or pay on bus.
Weather We went in March and the weather was apparently not normal for this time of year. The weather was blustery some days, and was cooler than the average temperatures for this time of year. Be prepared and take a mixture of clothing, especially for night time. Also do take some comfortable walking shoes!
