Historical Traveller Reviews of Porto Santa Maria Hotel (Porto Bay)

Location,location,location!!

from AdrianK
The Porto Santa Maria appears to be the only hotel actually in the old town; close to cable car and bus terminus; & in walking distance for the Cathedral/Shops/Market/Churches etc of Funchal.
We went B&B - the right decision - approx 10 restaurants within 100 yards of the hotel, we recommend the O Regional.
Hotel was modern (2000), right on the promenade, rooms clean & spacious, excellent views overlooking the sea & harbour, buffet breakfast very good (English or Continental or Both), very quiet - no road either front or back.
An excellent hotel, in a wonderful location if you like to be in the centre of things.

Best location in Funchal

from lucem
We chose this hotel for its location and were not disappointed. Quiet but close to plenty of restaurants, art gallery, the Monte cable car and buses. Views over the port of the comings and goings added interest. I have had hotel rooms that claim to include kitchen facilities but this was the best, so well equipped we could have cooked a full meal. We did not because the restaurants were so close and so reasonably priced. Best was A Muralha, just outside the hotel gate.

Porto Santa Maria hotel

Just spent 2 weeks at this lovely hotel. Weather was disappointing first week, much to the surprise of the Madeirans. However, the excellent accommodation and facilities more than made up for it. Very relaxed atmosphere. B&B basis is recommended (buffet breakfast was plentiful with loads of choice) and there is a huge variety of restaurants right on the doorstep, although the hotel offers some great themed evenings in their restaurant. Ideally situated if mobility is a problem. Will definitely be back. Actually picked the hotel because of the great reviews it was getting on Trip Advisor. Was not disappointed.

Excellent hotel

We have just spent a week in Maderia at the Porto Santa Maria Hotel. The weather was not as warm as expected for the time of year but the Hotel made up for everything. Within Walking distance of Funchal (on the level) Close to cable car and buses. The food(half board) was excellent with a varied menu incorporating Portugese Night, Italian Night etc with music and dance group on some nights.
Bedroom spacious and comfortable with kitchenette. Well recommended.

Superb!

A very well run hotel, staff very helpful, efficient and unobtrusive. Excellent location in the old town within easy reach of many good restaurants. The best situated hotel in town! Rooms of a high standard with good views. When we return to Madeira it will be to this hotel.

Thanks to Trip Advisor for sending us here!

We liked this hotel very much -- great location, next to a number of good restaurants and the interesting downtown. We had a lovely view of the sea and a very nice room. The staff were unusually helpful and pleasant, even redirecting callers to our new location after we had moved to stay with friends. We also recommend Barbara, the excellent and caring masseuse at the spa. We would definitely return to Porto Santa Maria again.

Just returned from our first trip to Madeira, and will certainly return to the Porto Santa Maria. Good facilities, friendly helpful staff, great breakfasts, and a perfect location within the old town.
Some great restaraunts on the doorstep- try the Regional, the chinese, and go to see Isabel at the Taraguna- all good meals, friendly staff and reasonable prices.
Book a sea view if possible for the best views.

A good Hotel

from RogerSwindon_UK
A good hotel in an excellent location (in the Old Town), which is only short walk to shops and even shorter to some good restaurants. I recommend the Chinese just around the corner with its excellent fresh produce and service!

Porto Santa Maria Hotel is modern, unpretentious and represents good value for money. The rooms are large enough, and above all exceptionally clean! Do not book a room with out a sea view as the hotel is situated right next to the sea and the outlook is just great!

The indoor and outdoor pools are clean, well maintained but are very shallow with no deep ends. The buffet breakfast is very good and you will be spoilt for choice (mind you, there is always some idiot who wants something not provided).

The drinks and food served are not at rip off prices and I believe that the staff could be on the friendlier side. All in all a very good hotel to stay at which caters for adults who want a quiet place to unwind and soak up the sun.

Exceeded all expectations !

My wife and I have just returned after our first trip to Madeira. Based on Tripadvisor reviews, we decided to give this hotel a try and were not disappointed in any way - well perhaps we could have booked earlier and had one of the premier sea view rooms, looking out over the harbour. However, reception staff did their best and managed to allocate a room with a partial sea view - thank you Delia.

The facilities are outstanding, the hotel sparkling clean from top to bottom and the staff cannot do enough for you - from the friendly reception and excellent room maids to Orlando who manages the outdoor areas so professionally. The location of this hotel is unique and perfect, right on the seafront, a few minutes from town centre, and with a great choice of restaurants on the doorstep. We only had breakfast in the hotel - fine, but more fresh fruit and a faster toaster please ! Superb entertainment nightly, and dont miss the Happy Hour cocktails !

My job actually involves measuring and improving Customer Service in all sorts of organisations - now with Porto Santa Maria Hotel, I have a new case study where Customer Service Excellence is part and parcel of this hotel operation in every respect. Congratulations to PSM Management and Staff. Yes, we will be back!

We have just came home on Wednesday from our holiday in Madeira. It was our first trip to the Island and the highlight I must say was this hotel. We felt totally at-home and welcome the minute our feet stepped over the door into reception. We were fortunate to get a sea view room which had a magnificent view over Funchal harbour and we seen 2 cruise ships stopping during our stay. The breakfasts were beautiful and the rooms absolutely spotless with clean towels and pool towels whenever we needed them. Even sweets left on our pillows by the maids when they made our bed - a nice touch!

We booked flights and hotel separately - therefore didn't have a rep - which we did not miss at all - Cecilia at Reception made up for this and gave us more than enough information for us to see all the sights around Funchal.

We both like a high standard while on holidays and are hard to impress but this hotel got full marks on our scale! If you have booked to stay here - enjoy!
