My wife and I had the most wonderful holidays here and the all the staff were friendly the chamber maids worked hard and our rooms were always clean. All linen changed on a daily basis. The hotel is spotless. The bar staff were wonderful as was their choice of cocktails.
Breakfast was wonderful so was the evening meals.
Plenty of musical entertaintment in the evening. The courtesy bus is very handy and the bus driver is very friendly and very helpful. We will recommend this hotel to all our friends and we will be back again.

Went to this hotel in January for the first time. Hotel fine, food excellent, staff could do enough for you, rooms large bathrooms and big beds rooms very big. spa seems fine did not use it much but other guests said it was good. Bathing even in January was fine. Madeira is a fine place for a holiday and I am returning to the cliff bay all going well next week and next January. The Cliff Bay is well worth its five stars. I would say made even five star deluxe.

Grandson John had completed his examinations and Gloriana and I brought him for a break. We were instantly recognised and greeted in the same welcoming fashion as before in all areas of the hotel.
The one to one scuba diving course gave John the break that he needed.
The choice of where and how to eat was up to the same high standard as before.
The drinks with the management enabled real discussion to take place with explanations such as use of the excess heat from the air conditioning.
A previous visit took in my birthday and on return to our room we found a cake and congratulatory note.
We normally never go back to the same place twice but we will going for time number?
Thank you for giving us the kind of time that we need.

great hotel

from pr0t
We spend there a wonderful week in January. This is a modern hotel, but not one of these ugly massive buildings that you often find along the coastline of Portugal or Spain -- only 5 floors, with street level being the top floor. Well deserved 4 stars, the rooms are spacey and very clean, staff is kind and helpful.

Good, quiet location if you don't mind a shuttle (quite frequent, but only until 6pm) or about 45min walk to Funchal. Superb views from the balcony (we were on the 3rd floor, the 1st would be the pool level so not that nice).

Food was mediocre, we liked fresh fruit salads for breakfast, but other than that nothing really fancy. We took a package of 3 dinners and were disappointed, as 2 out of 3 nights we chose happened to be self-service buffet dinners, and the 3rd one wasn't anything to write home about either. You can eat much better in Funchal.

One more thing that we did not mind at start, but then got a little tired with, was that almost all guests were 60+, only 2 or 3 younger couples. Just something you may take into account if you're around 30.

Overall, excellent hotel, certainly worth recommending.

Regency Cliff, well named

from fsmjt
Finding a small quiet hotel in Madeira isn't easy and I suppose a 59 room hotel isn't really that small, but in the context of the giant places now presenting themselves on this once ignored island, it really does come under that category. It is a true 4* hotel. The level of comfort, cleanliness and staff attention could not be faulted. The breakfast was excellent and the evening meals good value, but I would recommend limiting yourself to the special price 3 meal option, then eating out in the local restaurants for more variety the rest of the time, as we did.
The location is on the main coast road about a mile west of The Reids Palace hotel and stands on a vertical cliff. Being built into the cliff face it is an upside down building, street level being reception on floor 6, the rest of the rooms being lower down the cliff. Try to book a room at level 5 for the best views out to sea and Funchal. You will not be disappointed.

A fantastic time

from Sally08
I was only there for a couple of days but it was great!...
The hotel is fantastically located just right at the sea but still shopping and other facilities are not far at all!
I stayed at the second floor and could see the ocean from every corner of the room.Imagine if you take a relaxing bath looking straight to the ocean..
The room was really comfortable and always spottless clean.
I really enjoyed the warm atmosphere in the restaurant and the bar, the service was very friendly. I liked ecpecially the romantic, comfortable and calm atmosphere on the terrace.

I had a great time in this hotel and really cant complain. If I ever go back to Madeira (what I really want to) the Regency Cliff would be my first choice!

not a 4-star hotel

from maolgrammar
Our family (2 adults, one teenager) stayed at this hotel for a week. The place were the hotel was located was good and quiet, but still everything seemed to be very near. The view from the hotel to the ocean was magnificent and the rooms spottless. The only thing that we would complain about the room is that there was an awful smell in the bathroom through the whole week. (btw, our roomnumber was 201). Of course we went to reception to complain about it, but they didin't do anything about it. The reception guy just asked for the roomnumber and said that they will take care of it. We didn't see any change, but for our luck the smell disapeared time to times. The second disappointment was dinner. The restaurant was too small for such many people, and we waited for our turn to eat there almost every evening. We surely didn't like that. The variety of food was too small, considering that this is a 4-star hotel! The pool was great, very quiet and spottless. This was a big plus for us. One night there was a good piano bar. Warning, 60+ seniors are anti-visitors there!
But all in all the staff wasn't so interested about what you are doing. This was our second time in Madeira and the other hotel was 4-stars too and to be honest I can't ever compare them.

Word of advice for anyone with a booking at the Cliff - call them before you go to make sure they have a room for you. We were scheduled to stay there 13-23rd Feb 2007 on a booking confirmed both by e-mail and fax in December 2006. The Cliff had overbooked by 6 or 7 rooms - when I asked howcome, the answer was "We've had a lot of bookings"!!!!!! We were 'upgraded' to their sister hotel the Regency Palace. We had a booking for a premium room at the Cliff but they didn't seem to know this either (and all rooms are seaview) - on querying this we were advised by the Cliff reception not to worry, it would be a superior seaview room at the Palace. This reassurance was either mistaken or an attempt to fob us off, because when we arrived at the Palace they had a standard non-seaview room for us. After severe protestations and moving rooms twice we were finally given a very nice room, but of course it was in a huge hotel further out of town which was not what we wanted - we had specifically booked the Cliff because of its location and small size. I think this is very bad form and certainly not what you want at the start of your holiday. I will never book a Regency hotel again.

Madeira at its best!

from SesameSesame
From the brochure of Finland's largest tour operator, Sun-Tours, part of the national airline, Finnair, the Regency Cliff seemed to offer the best deal in terms of a week's Christmas break and we were very well pleased with our choice!
Our 2nd floor room, with a view directly to the sea, should place the hotel in the 5-star category. It was very spacious, fully equipped and with an equally spacious and well equipped bathroom. The balcony was also very spacious. The maid service saw the room kept in immaculate condition.
The restaurant provided an excellent and very comprehensive buffet breakfast, with a choice of both hot and cold items. The Christmas Eve Gala Dinner was superb and very reasonably priced.
The public areas of the hotel were more than adequate to provide a first rate environment for an establishment with only 59 rooms and were kept in spotless condition. We enjoyed using both the outdoor and indoor pools, the latter in the well-equipped fitness centre.
The staff throughout the hotel were friendly and eager to please - like most of the Madeirans.
The Regency Cliff's location, in the "hotel zone" is no big problem: a taxi to/from Funchal centre costs only about eur 4.50 and the hotel's free courtesy coach provides a more than adequate service.
As regular world-travellers, staying in hotels such as Loews/Grand, Monte Carlo, we can only give the Regency Cliff the highest possible recommendation to those who wish to have the benefits of a small hotel with 5-star facilities and service!

Superb location great staff modern and stylish

from g4ybu
This hotel cares - very courteous staff nothing was too much trouble, modern clean stylish hotel, fantastic views overlooking Funchal bay from terraces and our room on 5th floor. Nice big king size bed. Good selection and quality at breakfast. Courtesy bus to town a bonus. Try to get a top floor room for the views

Great Hotel

from Channon
Chose this hotel following the favourable reviews on Tripadvisor and the fact that it was quite small with 59 rooms
Then booked with Thomson who were offering a package holiday using Exeter Airport with decent flight times.
My wfe and I booked B & B . Breakfast was buffet style with lots of fruit, bread, rolls meats and those containers with cooked scrambled egg, sausages, baked beans, boiled eggs ,very streaky bacon. You make your own toast which takes longer but is at least fresh.
We booked one of the 6 premium rooms (extra £77 each with Thomson) and were very impressed with the views and size of the room. It was on the 4th floor (bit confusing as you go downstairs from reception on the 6th floor!) and had 2 balconies-one overlooking the Atlantic and one overlooking Funchall. Satellite TV in the room .
After our first evening meal ,which we enjoyed we booked for a further 3 meals at a cost of 64 euros each which included an appetiser and coffee. Not a big menu but we found it more than adequate ,well presented in comfortable surroundings with pleasant and courteous staff. Wine was from about 14 euros a bottle.
Lovely outside dining area which is accessed from the dining room and super views .The rooms were spotless and an excellent batroom with a decent shower.
Couple of very minor niggles-charge of 10.5 euros for safe key and the hotel courtesy bus to the centre is too infrequent. We did not use it at all but either walked (at least 45 minutes) or took a cheap taxi.
The evening "entertainment" was not very good-piano or singer but we went for some relaxing peace and quiet anyway
Watch some of the taxi drivers-we got caught out twice with overcharging. However the transfer we booked with Thomson £40 return was excellent but perhaps a bit on the expensive side but at least it was there when we arrived even though our flight was delayed for about 7 hours due to fog.
Lovely area near the pool and a good qusality though small indoor heated pool, sauna and gym
Overall we can heartily recommend this quiet hotel

Quiet Retreat

from Lisa_Jane_89
We went here for a week in August and loved the place.

We wanted a smallish hotel so that the pool area wouldn't be packed - it was perfect. The terrace area for breakfast was lovely and the hotel staff were helpful.

We chose bed and breakfast so that we could eat out in the evenings and there were lots of lovely restaurants in the Lido and Old Town.

I would definitely recomment this place to couples looking for a quiet and relaxing place to stay!

great views, large rooms, polite but unobtrusive staff

from ElsieB
The Hotel was well looked after, very clean and the rooms were spacious, comfortable with both having a balcony. We asked for adjoining rooms to our children and were given them immediately and with the interconnecting door unlocked for us so that we had the use of two huge rooms.

There are two pools (indoor and outdoor) both very well maintained and the hotel is very close to local lido's.

The staff are excellent. Very polite and helpful-nothing seemed to be too much trouble.

The only criticism (and its a small one) is that the hotel food is a bit boring. Only buffet meals available. A proper menu would have been nice but the food was okay. The are a number of good restaurants close to the hotel but it is worth wandering into Funchal which is appoximately 40 mins from the hotel for more choice and cheaper meals.

This is an excellent hotel and we woulde definately stay there again
