A poor five star

from TravelSweden
This hotel may look impressive from the outside but it does not live up to their five stars. I visited Madeira for business and I am usually less picky with work than when I travel with my family. However, the check in was extremely slow and I experienced many situations during my two nights stay when I was completely ignored at the lobby. The room was very nice with a beautiful view of the Atlantic Ocean, completely refurbished and very clean, but the hotel itself is dark, apart from the restaurant area. There is no Internet access in the rooms even though they advertise it. I called the reception twice in the matter and they told me both times that they would return my call with answers which they never did. There is limited WiFi in the lobby area, rather slow at times. There is no room service menu in the rooms, you have to order it. It took me three phonecalls (1 hour) before somebody delivered the menu to my room and I spoke to three different people before somebody took my order. When the food finally arrived, it had the wrong toppings but I was too hungry to complain. I had to order breakfast in my room for the last morning as I had an early flight and I ordered a fresh fruit salad... I got two bananas. There were just too many disruptions to what should be normal hotel service thus even though I would like to visit Madeira again, I will never stay at this hotel.

Convenient position. Lovely hotel.

We have recently returned from the Pestana Casino Park and would certainly recommend this lovely hotel. It has been recently refurbished.

The room we stayed in looked towards Reid's Hotel, and had a nice view of the ocean. It was spacious and spotless. There was a fridge in the room, which was a bonus. There is a very small supermarket in a building close to the hotel, and we stocked the fridge for picnics etc. (There is a large supermarket at the Lido) There was also a kettle and cups ( an adaptor is required, we brought one with us but apparently they are available in the hotel) which is rare for Madeiran hotels. There was a small supply of tea, coffee etc, and then you could buy further supplies from the hotel or get your own. Fluffy bathrobes were provided for using the pool. The indoor pool is lovely, the water was nice and warm and it was not too busy. We didn't try the outdoor pool so I can't comment on that.

We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis, and the buffet breakfast was excellent. The panoramic dining room overlooks the infinity pool and the ocean.

This hotel is in an excellent position. It is only about five minutes walk from the town, and very close to Santa Catarina park which has a small cafe overlooking the duck pond.

There are lots of places to eat locally.

This was the fifth time that we have visited Madeira, and this was the nicest hotel that we have stayed at to date. Because we have been before we didn't take advantage of any of the organised tours this time, but I would recommend a tour of the West and also the East (my favourite). The cable car to Monte is very good, and the Monte Palace tropical gardens are lovely - very inventive use of water, lovely Japanese garden, and the koi carp are huge! The botanical gardens are also lovely and house a bird park, it is inexpensive to visit as entry is only 3 euros per person. Take a bus from Funchal, again 3 euros each from the kiosk - return ticket. Total cost 12 euros for two people. I would suggest taking a picnic, or at least a drink as the cafe in the gardens was not open on the day we visited.

The pedestrian promenade which starts at the Lido and goes towards Priaia Formosa is a nice walk. It goes through a man made tunnel and seems to come to an end at a cafe. Turn right at the cafe, skirt the industrial area, turn left and then you can continue on across the black sand and then back onto a walkway towards Camara de Lobos. A longish walk there and back, but very nice.

Madeira as a resort is quiet and refined . I suppose this is why it appeals to the more mature traveller. The flowers and gardens are gorgeous, banana plantations abound, the levadas offer opportunities to get into inaccessible areas, and it is relatively crime free.

In my opinion it is not an ideal resort for holidaymakers with small children. There are no beaches to speak of, other than the small beach at Praia Formosa, and there are lots of sheer drops to terrify the parents of adventurous tots. There were very young children staying at the hotel whilst we were there though, and they were very good, they seemed to be having a good time enjoying the pool, and a couple of older children knocking a ball back and to on the tennis courts

The Madeiran people are wonderful, very helpful and kind, and their drivers are fantastic!

We will return to Madeira, and we will probably return to this hotel. It has everything required for a comfortable stay, and we had a lovely break.

What a beautiful hotel ...opened last week and is excellent

from Jude-7
What can I say! The Casino Park in Funchal has been completely refurbed..........see pictures posted and has been transformed into an elegant and beautiful place to stay in Funchal. We stayed the week it reopened and watched it change into something very special.
Rooms are spacious with new enormous beds, we stayed in a junior suite which had two balconies with sea view. The new indoor pool and spa is excellent as is the new jacuzzi and gym by the outdoor pool.
Well done Pestana we will certainly be returning!

Stay Somewhere Else!

The hotel is in need of renovation! It has old furniture and decorations. The staff is arrogant and rude! The view from the ocean side is nice, but from the pool it looks over a dirty harbor. Other htoels seem to have nicer access and more pristine view of the ocean. Overall, I would not recommend staying there.

s not been updated in the way it deserves

from A TripAdvisor Member
I have stayed at the Casino Park about 4 or 5 times over the past 10 years. It still represents good value for money, but it has been sorely neglected as far as updating goes. It desperately needs an indoor swimming pool which would give a much needed lift to its appeal. It's position, overlooking the harbour, is great, the buffet breakfasts are excellent (like all Funchal hotels I've stayed at), the public rooms are bright and modern, the staff are fine – BUT...it's not really moved on from when I first visited 10 years ago; consequently I've looked at, and stayed at, other hotels during the interim. All in all, though, it's still good value.

We're a couple in our late 20s/early 30s and we stayed at the Pestana Casino Park for a week. We're very outdoorsy and don't care that much about the hotels we stay in, we don't go on holiday to stay in a hotel but to experience things outside the hotel.

However, the architecture is very nice and the rooms are nice but a bit old fashioned. The breakfasts were wonderful and the restaurant staff was very professional.

We were the youngest couple staying in the hotel, most guests seemed to be over 50. I guess that some younger people would find this boring, but since we hadn't planned to spend time in the hotel anyway, we didn't mind. We didn't spend any of our evenings in the casino either since it's just not our thing.

You can rent a car in the hotel and your car is just outside the hotel, and that's also where you park it. Very convenient.

The location is perfect, much closer to town than all those hotels around Lido and you get a nice five-minute-walk through the park when you go into town. On sea-level below the hill where the hotel is, there's a harbour with containers etc. The harbour was noisy at times, but as far as I know a new harbour is being built outside Funchal, so the noisyness will stop.

Average stay at the Pestana Casino Park

We stayed at this hotel in July this year and found the place clean and comfortable- if a little old fashioned.
The facilities were good and the staff were very helpful.
The casino was a tad bit tacky and can get a bit noisy at weekends.
Excellent breakfast buffet and well priced alcohol drinks can be purchased there.
Hotel has entertainment every night but it was geered towards older people.
If you are young there is not much to do in the evenings except walk into the old town or go to club Chameleon which is part of Taj Mahal indian resturant which is about 5 minutes from the hotel or vespas( nightclub).
Although many tour reps recommend you visit the old part of Funchal for good traditional food we found that the best places to eat were about 5 minutes from the hotel.
The island is easy to get around we covered it by car in less than two days.
Santana, Ribeira Brava, and Machico are worth visiting.
The farmers market, Monte Garden Place and cable cars are also worth looking at when in Funchal.
If you like shopping I would recommend you visit the Mall which is in the Hotel quarter near Crown Plaza etc as there are lots of really well priced clothes there.
As we are in out late twenties, we found Maderia a it a bit too relaxing and thought that 4 nights would of been sufficient.

try another

from inlisbon
Beautifull arquitecture...and that's it! The hotel is in desperate need of renovation. Staff is grumpy, arrogant and aged. Room service breakfast is a joke.Go if you find a good deal but expect a 3 star hotel with bad service.
Nice pool

Most Luxurious Hotel Ever Stayed in

The room was the most amazing room I have ever stayed in.

The buffet breakfast was great. The a la carte restaurant was fabulous. The lunch buffet was also fab ( but just too tempting to overload).

Very helpful reception who helped us with everything - recommended an excellent local fish restaurant ' il barquiero' the otehr side of the hotel stirp which were teh best restaurants appeared to be - we went there twice.

The only downside was the ents which I went expecting - very much geared to an older crowd and finish very early - for example the latin night. I was expectign to be able to get up an dance but no such luck. The casino evning also wasn't to my taste - I've seen better at Blackpool

The town of Funchal was also very disappointing - the food on teh harbour could have been Blackpool or any English seaside resort and the prices were very high.

Recommend takign a car and going inland - the scenery is amazing.

Best evening was when nelly furtado played on teh harbour - couldn't really see her but the atmosphere was electric.

a great hotel to holiday

We stayed in the pestane carlton in september and we thought it was a good hotel, good location, and good value for money. We will be returning this next summer.

Top Local Tips for Funchal

Don't bank on party party nightlife Make the most of a leisurely evening dinner, with a few drinks afterwards.

Nightlife? Evening cocktails is about it! If your looking for nightlife, there is none. This is a great place to go and gettaway from it all. Take lots of magazines and a good book.

Giro It is worth using local buses around town - 2 euros for the first trip then "top up" the ticket at the Giro stations or tabacs with any number of journeys which then cost only 85 cents each. We found it great to walk DOWN into town and Marinaa and take the bus back UP!!
