We stayed for a week. Found the hotel good value for money. Clean, well maintained, extremely helpful staff. Internet access was free despite published charges. Only slight moan was that the piano bar opened late and closed too early - 11. pm. Not 5* but not 5* prices. Certainly a very good 3+/4*. The location was very good - walked into town quite a lot but a free bus was available. Good food at good prices close by. Not ripped off by anyone. Would definately return in the future.

This hotel is very comfortable and has the best staff in the city. It is not expensive and is like being at home. The people treat you like you are part of their family.

Clean and friendly. Steep hill to reception - only suitable for fit people. Food - nothing special. Good base to tour from.

Top Local Tips for Funchal

Great Restaurant Try the Terrace D'Ajuda, on Travessa do Valente; it's the one with three parrots on perches outside the door. Not the cheapest but definitely the best in walking distance.

Walking venues Avoid the higher parts and north of the island over the winter months as you might well be shrouded in mist/cloud. There are many levada walks on lower ground (and probably in sun) for winter months

Must Visit trips - Cable Car Gardens & the West side. The gardens at the top of the cable-car look nothing from outside but are well worth a visit, even if you are not a 'garden person'. They contain lots of lovely walkways, a lake, fountains, statues, a collection of historic typical poirtuguese tiled panels, a museum of African carvings, a museum of archaeological crystal specimens, fish ponds and much more all included in the entrance fee. In my opinion these gardens are far better than the Botanical gardens that can be reached via another cable car close by. Don't use the 2nd cable car to the botanical gardens on a windy day. Its a bit of a hair-raising ride as you cross the deep valley. Take a coach trip to the west or far side of the island. Its stunning but be prepared for mountain passes where the road is very close to the edge. This is a beautiful but very very hilly island that requires lots of energy and leaves you tired but satisfied at the end of every day.Oh and the locals are wonderful!
