The Right Choice

from A TripAdvisor Member
Presented with a myriad of hotel choice for a last minute holiday, we elected to stay largely because of the "brand quality" associated with the Crowne Plaza. It proved the right choice. A modern, airy, light hotel with much open space in the general areas, appealing minimalist decor and spacious, clean and well appointed rooms. The outdoor pools are splendid (but forget the indoor pool, I fear!) and the sunbathing area well kept and vast, with a supply of fresh towels and attendant on duty during the day. However, its real appeal lies in its location; a truly lovely position facing the sea. All rooms are afforded an ocean view, most of them a great one. It was a pleasure to take the armchair outside and sit comfortably on the balcony in warm, early November sunshine, reading a good book, watching passing yachts and ships or just allowing the sight of the ocean and the sound of the waves to relax me. Add to that easy accessability to Funchal and its promenade, shops, restaurants and cablecars(a ten minute, 75p return, bus ride away, with a good service and bus-stops less than 100 yards from the front door; and minimal research makes travel to most places just as easy and cheap from Funchal on the cross island buses) and a wide choice of restaurants locally (in fact, a good, reasonably priced meal right next door and another with peppered steak to die for 5 minutes walk away up the hill)and, in my opinion, you could not go far wrong here. Breakfast was first class and plentiful. Staff were helpful and unobtrusive and the hotel "Thank You" cocktail party was just that: no attempts at pushing time share or trips, which can't be said of some other places we saw. I am not suggesting categorically that this is the best hotel in the area but, having taken the opportunity to scout around some of the others we considered, I am definitely saying that you will go a long way to better it; and if you do, it will probably cost you rather more - consider booking independently and true value for money is to be had. I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.

Second visit and not the last

from BBosworth
We visited Madaeira in 2004 and decided to return in 2005. On both visits we stayed at the Crowne Plaza. Yes it lacks any rustic charm but it makes up for it in many other ways. My priorities in any hotel are - clean, quiet and a comfortable bed - and this scores on all three as it's spotlessly clean, tranquil and a good place to sleep. All the ample sized rooms face the sea and have a pleasant view.Cleaning staff and turn down service were excellent. The breakfasts were very good, as were the snacks served out by the swimming pool. The centre of town is a 20 min walk but it's a very steep walk back - however the buses run every 10 minutes and a taxi is only around 5 euros. This is a great 5 star hotel at a reasonable price. And yes we are going back again.

Fab breakfast

from Louise109
Just returned from a week's holiday at this ultra modern hotel in the hotel zone of Funchal. Delighted with the size of the room and the generous bed proportions in particular. The air conditioning makes the temperature very comfortable and we were particularly impressed by the safe facility, using our own password, the ironing board and iron (handy but not used over-much!). complimentary teas/coffees/water etc. However, the piece de resistance is the high quality and variety of the breakfast! A vast choice of cold meat, cheeses, smoked salmon, tomatoes, fresh fruit, any number of cooked breakfasts including the omelette griddle, cereals, yogurt, a selection of breads and rolls, and even delicious cakes! I have not had better anywhere! The only little criticism would be that it is a little impersonal as the waitresses differ everyday and you don't see the same staff more than once anywhere. The hotel is light and airy, the pools well maintained with towels provided, and plenty of umbrellas to hand. I would recommend this hotel to anyone though not to anyone seeking an old traditional madeiran hotel.

excellent value winter sun

from A TripAdvisor Member
We booked an incredibly cheap rate over internet and we were therefore pleased and suprised to be allocated a spacious full ocean view room. Large balcony with seating etc. Decor very fresh and pleasant but in a modern style could have been anywhere,. Great pool area, stunning view from deckchair and with a good lunchtime restaurant beside it [unlike previous commentator we did not find this overpriced given venue etc]. We did not eat in hotel at night as looked a bit 'institutional' for us but lots of good places within a couple of minutes walk many with menus that we had not seen since being taken out for birthday treats in the 1970's [crepe suzette, chicken cordon bleu etc]. Hired a car and toured the island. Some fantastic scenary and our ten year old partiuclarly liked going underground down into some caves made from lava flows over the other side of the island. All in all really great and dead easy place to find cheap winter sun.

Excellent Highly Modern Hotel

from Gags
Stayed at the Crowne Plaza Madeira during the first week of May 2005, with my girlfriend. I took a chance and booked the free 'honeymoon package' which was available until the end of April. We got a room on one of the executive floors (floors 8-10)and we were both highly impressed! (Although reading the other reviews here I would possibly imagine that ants do come in on some of the lower floors as they are built into the rock face and join onto the garden).
I would definately recommend this hotel as it is spotlessly clean and an excellent (although slighly strange twin and I mean everything!) modern design and all rooms have a fantastic sea view.
Breakfast is excellent - 12.5 euros each, inc sparkling wine! We were even shown into the executive dining area!
It has two outdoor pools and one indoor/outdoor pool - all great and clean. The sea was a bit rough when we were there and unfortunately could not swim in the sea, but the private Lido area is fantastic - probably better than the public Lido.
One slight moan about the check-in staff - they can be a bit abrupt in their attitude - they could do with a bit of training in this area, but overall very good.
I would have to agree with the advertising and say that it is probably in the best location in Funchal - walkable to both the town and Lido areas! Some people may worry about the hills, but we found the main road was relatively flat - the big hills are in the main town above the centre.
Restaurants in the Lido area are plenty and cheap-probably a third off British prices. The Irish bar attached to the hotel is expensive for Madeiran prices, but cheaper than rip-off Dublin!, but does allow smoking - so not fully genuine!!
Beware of the timeshare touts - they say it is not timeshare, but it is! But then if you do attend a 1-2 hour breifing you may be lucky to get a free gift - we got a Nun's Valley tour worth 20Euros each!!So not too bad for a cloudy days work!
Overall Excellent hotel and resort!

Funchal good winter sun destination

from A TripAdvisor Member
We spent a very enjoyable 5 days in Funchal in January. Temperature was about 18, so felt warm compared to the UK. Unfortunately it rained on the Saturday and then became very windy so we were not able to go on a boat trip to see dolphins as we had planned. However we went up to Monte on the cable car - it's quite a long way and it was a bit windy, but we arrived safely and it was very sunny on the terrace at the top. We walked down - passed by people having the sledge experience! We also did one of the standard morning mini-bus trips. The flowers everywhere were fantastic. We didn't visit any actual gardens. It was amazing to see bougainvillea pouring over walls round houses, hibiscus hedges, poinsettias of all sizes from little pot plants to trees and lots of other lovely things that we didn't recognise. We also saw lots of bananas - sometimes in little plots in front of houses.
The Crowne Plaza was very comfortable. Our room was lovely with a balcony and fantastic sea view and the staff were very friendly and helpful. I was disappointed not to be able to use the infinity pools by the sea because of the change in the weather.
We would recommend Funchal as a destination and we are looking forward to going again ourselves and visiting more of the island. We have obtained bus itineraries and plan to use these to get about and do some walks starting at different points.

it is a good hotel but not the one that I expected

from A TripAdvisor Member
After a research of Madeira Hotels I choose this one due to the SPA area and I must say that it is a good hotel but not the one that I expected.

It is a five star hotel with a very simple and modern decoration but the rooms were spacious enough and the view was breathtaking, the only thing that I missed was the usual basket of fresh fruit that these hotels normally have.
We used a lot the interior swimming pool with hot water and with a part in the exterior what give us a possibility to swim outside. Very important since it is January and we couldn?????????t use the two great exterior swimming pools. I think that in the summer this Hotel must be the must, since we can have some scuba diving lessons and we can swim directly in sea.
The SPA area wasn?????????t five stars but it was ok and the people were very courteous, actually I must say that apart of some receptionist the all staff is really nice.
We didn?????????t use the restaurants but the breakfast and the room service is very good.

We liked the hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
Having seen one adverse review but many 5 star reviews we decided to book here but with some caution.
We found the staff, without exception, to be helpful and courteous, without being intrusive. The bedroom was very spacious and comfortable with a good size lounge area with comfortable seating and a balcony overlooking the sea.
As we were out of season there were only 2 restaurants plus coffee area open. That was sufficient. Food was good and in the brasserie (buffet) varied.

The only ants we saw were after a day of heavy rain, in the coffee area. We remarked on this and were told that the rain drives them in. They never appeared again.

Criticisms: The entrance foyer is vast, but virtually bare, the tables in the Brasserie were laid out in neat rows and looked institutional, the internet access was very expensive - there is a cheap internet cafe a few yards down the road.

All in all an enjoyable hloiday

Not that impressed actually

from Londonprofessionals
We are quite surprised at all the high ratings and praise for this hotel.

We booked a 7 night holiday staying at the Crowne Plaza in September 2004. We wanted to stay at this particular hotel as its' contemporary and airy look appealed to us. A couple of days after reserving a room we were told by the operator that the hotel was overbooked and we had to stay in the Tivoli hotel for the first night. Although inconvenient, we agreed to do this. We had paid very cheap rates.

The Tivoli was great. Although it was slightly chintzy for our taste it was immaculate, the service was great, the breakfast was definitely 5 star and the pool was lovely and uncrowded. The restaurants near the sea by the Tivoli are fantastic. Very modern, good food and great service and good prices. After a swim on the morning after our first night in Madeira we packed up and walked the short distance to the Crowne Plaza for the rest of our holiday.

We did not expect to be allocated a great room at the Crowne Plaza as we had booked last minute and paid a very low rate but we were still somewhat disappointed at the shabby fixtures and fittings of the room. After all it is meant to be a five star.

On the first morning we awoke to find our room teeming with ants. It was disgusting. To add insult to injury the lady on the front desk was extremely flippant and rude and only after complaining several times did she allow us to change rooms. At frist she tried to persuade us that the housekeeper would put insect repellant down but there was no way we were going to share a room with 100s of the little blighters - dead or alive - for the rest of our holiday. Unfortunately the new room we were allocated was on the same floor as the ant infestation so we decided to pay a bit extra and got a room on the top floor - the 10th floor. The view was amazing but the furnishings and fittings were NOT 5 star. Just because there is a Philippe Starck designed balcony chair does not make up for the other areas of the room that were lacking and a bit grubby. To summarise - our experience of the rooms was very negative and the staff were not exactly helpful.

In terms of the common parts of the hotel, they were not air conditioned and should have been and there was a distinct pong of sewage on the ground floor around the cocktail bar and breakfast area. Grim.

Now to the breakfast. Having sampled a splendid breakfast on our first morning in Madeira in the Tivoli we had high expectations for the Crowne Plaza. We were disappointed. The fruit was slopped in bowls. The serving spoons were dirty. The cooked breakfast was low quality and not very fresh. The pastries and breads were nice though. The staff were surly. The coffee was cold. If you watch carefully you can see that the staff simply move coffee pots off vacated tables to give to people who arrive for breakfast. It was NOT five star. I do not expect to have tinned fruit put out at breakfast on holiday in Madeira trying to be passed off as fresh fruit. The champagne at breakfast was the cheapest most acidic fizzy white wine you have ever tasted.

Now the pool area is very very nice. The umbrellas are mostly broken though. The loungers are fairly comfortbale and the pool attendants were charming. The pool area was very clean. The pool restaurant is massively overpriced and the staff are the same ones as at breakfast so don't expect a smile.

Now to the gym. It is awful. It smells. It is small. The machines are very old.

Despite all of the above we did enjoy our holiday in Madeira but we would not recommend staying at the Crowne Plaza. Far better to stay at the Tivoli. Interestingly our taxi driver who took us back to the airport at the end of our stay told us that the Crowne Plaza is struggling and agreed with us that the Tivoli is much nicer.

Superlative except...

from hughTutburyStaffs
Wife and I aged 58 and 39ish + vat spent 10 nights at Crowne Plaza 28/09/04-8/10/04. All we could wish for in a hotel. Service, facilities, staff, food all very very good. Downside is that we found it rather sterile and lacking in atmosphere. That said, the hotel cannot be faulted.
Suggestion to anybody visiting Madeira, find a good taxi driver. We did and it made our holiday.
I have a number for an excellent English speaking driver should anyone need one. (I am not on comission)
Great island, great people, great hotel and great holiday.

Top Local Tips for Funchal

go up to MONTE in a taxi and look around the gardens Come back on the cable car.Taxi up to Monte should be no more than 15 euros

may may be better than april lovely weather but seem to think from may it gets significantly better

BravaCars Be aware that the above car rental firm will not assist you if you have a puncture. There is a clause in their contract, which says you must return the car in the same condition. We had a puncture, we changed the wheel but then found that we were expected to take the tyre to the garage, pay for the repair and the firm would not even suggest a garage let alone give us the location - quite daunting in a strange place!
