You know when you look at the pictures on the website and they look great but when you get there its never as good - well choupana Hills was better - i have never had such a wonderfully pleasing holiday - the staff were great - the room was amazing - the service faultless! - great with our baby - great surroundings too! food not quite as good as i expected - but the rest made up for it!

The Choupana Hills Resort & Spa surpassed our already high expectations. It is in an incredibly lovely setting looking down from its hillside over funchal and the bay. The hotel has a wonderfully calm and tranquil ambience and is the ideal place to enjoy a break recharging the batteries or sharing special time with a loved one.

We enjoyed a meal in the restaurant which was superb and a real gastronomic experience.

The staff in the resort could not do enough for us, yet were never intrusive.

We fell in love with Choupana Hills and will definately be back!!

Top Local Tips for Funchal

Rip-off central Most restaurants in Funchal are very expensive with bland uninteresting food. There is no variety - just expensive fish (it really shouldn't be considering you are surrounded by sea!) and meat on skewers. We found one good regional cuisine restaurant in Funchal (The Beerhouse - which make their own beer) and one good slightly different restaurant with the best view ever called 'Riso'. These were the only places worth going to out of 10 that we went to.

Palheiro Gardens Even if you're not a garden freak, do not miss the beautiful Palheiro Gardens, 15 minutes from Funchal, open from monday to friday from 9 am till 4.30 pm. You should count an hour an a half at least to visit at ease. If coming by car, there are 2 parking spots : one in front of the outside walls and one inside, after the ticket booth. If with elderly people our young children, try to park inside, as this will save you some walking before accessing the gardens. There is also a bus stop outside, with buses 37 and 36A taking you there from Funchal and back -> check the timetable !

Villa Cipriani You won't find a better view from a restaurant! Be sure to ask for outside, and on the 'edge'.
