Historical Traveller Reviews of Albergaria Dias Hotel
The hotel reception was friendly, gave us a welcome drink and advised us on the best local restaurants. Room 306 was clean, comfortable, little balcony with chairs and a table with a splendid sea view. The slightly cheaper rooms were not so high, so no sea view but a view over the pool and lush garden.
Breakfast was very good, choice of hot and or cold - hot was typically an veggie omelette with bacon or susage for the carnivores, and often pancakes as well. Cold was a great typical continental spread, fresh breads, croissants, ham, cheese and lots of fruit salad.
The hotel is in a quiet (little traffic noise) area of the old town, a short walk from the seafront and harbour areas, and within literally five minutes walk were about ten restaurants. We tried about five, and can honestly say that we did not have a bad meal in any of them. Some parts of the meals were better in some than others - a particularly good steak in one, eg, was let down by indifferent veg, but we didn't go wrong, and we are fussy about our food and service. The Portugese wines available were good and not pricy, and typically you would be given a free Madeira wine as a "pousse-cafe"
We are walkers, and found the Levada walks excellent, but public transport a little daunting for first timers. The town's main Information Bureau was not very helpful.
Weather was mixed - stormy and rainy, followed by good sunshiny days like early UK summer.
Would we go again? Yes.
Would we recommend the hotel? Definitely. One of the best all-round value hotels we have stayed in, and excellent food, reception and service staff could not have been more helpful. Plus, although it is a modern hotel, it is family run, and much nearer "real" (literally and metaphorically ) Funchal than the concrete wasteland of the "hotel district".
Would we recommend trip advisor? On the basis of this trip, reading previous visitors reviews and comments, definitely.
Oldtown secretfrom EastofEngland
The owner, who was very visable every day, and all of the staff were very helpful and any request is dealt with in a efficient manner.
The hotel is very clean and the Breakfasts are vast, Eggs,Bacon, Pancakes, Sausages, Meats, Cheeses, Fruits, Yoghurts, etc. etc.
We had a sea view room with a balcony overlooking the sea and Harbour. It was nice to find a refrigirator in the room and to be told by the staff to use it for storing drinks and food.
One slight drawback at the moment is that buiding work is being carried out on an adjacent property and ther is a slight amount of noise, however it did not spoil our enjoyment.
Return to our favourite hotelfrom Scottie070
On previous occasions we booked through a tour company but this year contacted the hotel directly: no problems. We have always paid extra for a harbour view room and feel it is well worth it. There is lots to see from the balcony and it is a sun trap especially in the afternoons. The rooms, apart from the penthouse floor, are all identical and comfortable if not huge. We were glad of the air-conditioning this year!
Breakfasts are wonderful: especially the huge bowl of fruit salad containing every fruit you can imagine. Lots of different rolls, bread etc and home made jam. Other guests spoke highly of the cooked breakfasts but we prefer the "continental" one.
The bar serves excellent salads and sandwiches at lunchtime. In the evenings, the choice of restaurants just outside the back door is incredible! Our discovery this year (not quite as near as the Old Town restaurants) was the Cafe do Museu, part of the Sacred Art Museum in the main square. Fish and pasta, reasonably priced and a little different.
We always make use of the local buses: very cheap and convenient. The new Giro pass on the local buses is very simple. Buy a pass at the beginning of your stay and then top up at the machines - instructions in English! Much cheaper than buying tickets on the bus. We ave always found the drivers very helpful about telling us what stops to get off at for the levada or whatever else we've asked for.
All in all, we'll be back next year.
Fab winter break, great hotelfrom bright-star
The staff and owners are very friendly & welcoming, and could not have been more helpful suggesting restaurants, trips and local information.
We were fortunate to have booked the suite, room 401 which had a large balcony with great views over Funchal & the harbour, & which was a real suntrap particularly in the afternoons.
There was some building work going on nearby but we had been warned this may be the case & were prepared for it so it was not too much of a problem.
The location of the hotel just a short walk into the old town & lots of restaurants was a real bonus, not far to walk mostly on the flat into Funchal itself. Also within an easy stroll of the bus depot and cable car so lots of access to the rest of the Island if you want it.
We had a wonderfully relaxing stay and enjoyed the carnival on our day of arrival.
Also worthy of mention, we wanted to get a therapy treatment during our hol & were given info from the hotel about a therapist in Funchal, Germano Rodrigues, Rua De Seminario no 7. Tel 969856663.
I had an excellent Shiatsu treatment and my friend had a massage which was also very good, very professional don't be put off by the address & appearance of the building the therapy rooms are very good and his english speaking on reception wife was very pleasant & helpful.
We would highly recommend this hotel and would definitely return ( lots of people staying there were regulars).
Really enjoyed it.from essdee321
The hotel was very clean and tidy. I enjoyed the buffet breakfast which had various hot dishes as well as the usual range of cereals, cold meats / cheeses and fruit.
The pool was not large but perfect for a bathe and a paddle.
No problem getting a sunbed, and clean towels were provided daily by the pool.
There was a sauna room for those who fancy it - though I never used it.
A favourite for me and my girlfriend was some tea and home made cakes (carrot, banana, chocolate ) by the pool in the afternoon. I believe Mrs. Dias made them.
The other snacks were tasty and good value.
The hotel wasn't set up for evening meals, but a short walk down what we called lizard alley - (don't be afraid, they are only tiny and scurry away when they hear footsteps ) through the rear gate and you are in the old town of Funchal. Lots of choice of restaurant. I really liked Arsenios which is just off the main road for wonderful barbecued fish.
I would recommend staying at this hotel for a peaceful, pleasant holiday.
lovely, friendly hotel, great locationfrom JandARJ
21 restaurants (we counted!) close by - our favourite was La Regional (fish was superior) on the front not far from the cable car but all we tried were more than OK. We loved the old town and its local eccentrics and sooo pleased not up in the concrete jungle. If you need a taxi from the airport (25 euros) ask them to contact -Virgilio - honest guy and will do day tours for 100 euros.
Delightful hotelfrom IMATripper
My wife and I ignored a warning from the travel company about building work next door, and didn't regret it. The work was more interesting than intrusive, and it didn't bother us at all on the days we stayed by the pool.
The hotel is situated in the "old town", at the other end of the bay from the modern developments, and there are many restaurants within 200 yards or so. This is the place for us! Two minutes to the long promenade, and an enjoyable walk to the centre of Funchal. There are amazing bargains to be had if you shop where the locals shop, and eat where they eat. But take care in the fruit and flower market. Some of the stall holders are experts at ripping off tourists! Check the price before you buy, but don't miss the experience.
We saw much of the island during our two weeks stay, so we may not return. If we do, we will definitely stay at the Albergaria dias!
loved the hotelfrom holiday54
The only draw back we found was although we wanted a relaxing holiday and we had one we found that the hotel bar closed its shutters at 11 o'clock every night and lights around the pool and surrounding areas in the hotel were switched off as if telling you it was time for bed. It wouild have been nice to have had a drink with other guests (to which we did up until 11pm) - i think if it perhaps closed at midnight would have been a more acceptable time - we were on holiday! Also just a minor point there was no music played whilst at breakfast or having a drink in the bar- low classical music would have been nice as it was very quiet during breakfast. All in all saying that i would still go back as it is a beautiful hotel with lovely views over the sea and marina. Excellant
Highly recommended!from mmeads1
Although there was building work, we were pre-warned well in advance and the work itself was never instrusive. We were really glad we decided still to go to the hotel.
Superb location, within minutes of the Old Town. Large choice of restuarants in the Old Town.
The room was spotless. The staff were always polite, welcoming and helpful. The owner and manager was always in evidence around the hotel.
The breakfasts were excellent and the snacks available from the bar were very tasty.
Overall - highly recommended.

Top Local Tips for Funchal
TAKE A TAXI Unless you want to be scared rigid don't rent a self drive car. Taxis are easily available. efficient and fairly priced.
the ride of your life if you want a nail biting ride to the botanic gardens take the number 29 bus otherwise the number 29 is more civilised do not bother getting tickets from the kiosks pay when you board
Restaurants Don't be too intimidated by the waiters trying to get people on seats. They stand out the front of their restaurant promising the best food you will eat. They aren't shy, so don't be afraid to say no and walk on.
