Top location
from esw1976Relaxed and Inconspicuous 5Star Hotel
from sodie69Great location in a 4-star charging 5-star prices
from NW_RavenIndeed, location is this hotel's prime virtue: on the broad, multi-lane boulevard that runs directly into the heart of the old city. A 15-minute walk takes you to the Rua Augusta pedestrian mall with its large number of patios, bars, restaurants, and shops. Near the hotel are old neighbourhoods, local restaurants, and good transit. The airport is not far, taxis are always around, and a big souvenir shop stands on the same block. The hotel's lovely breakfast buffet room overlooks the boulevard and the facade is easy for a footsore tourist to spot in the evening.
Inside, the lobby is grand and old-fashioned, with lots of room for big groups to arrive, then mingle over a drink later on. The staff are of the experienced, professional type often found in such downtown 5-stars. The feel is old, high-class, but a bit musty.
Unfortunately, the same can be said for my room. While the décor and fittings were all high-quality, they seemed to be from another decade. The drapes and linen had a musty odour and the bathroom a few cracks and shoddy upgrades. The room was small, but with a nice ante-room attached. For the 5-star price, I expected more. Especially since I had just left a better appointed suburban hotel that cost half as much.
My disappointment was compounded by the extremely high cost of any meal or service other than the complimentary buffet breakfast. Fortunately, good eateries frequented by locals are all around the area.
Overall, a decent place but definitely 4-star at 5-star prices paid mainly for the location and prestige.
The best thing for our group was the hidden outdoor pool.
from ohmiroseOur room was not large and I didn't care for the heavy draperies and fussy patterned wallpaper, all in green.
VEry good but not 5*
from JchmIt scores highly for location and service. The staff were excellent in all regards. Our flight out from Manchester was cancelled, so we had to move our booking back by 24 hours - the hotel obliged without fuss or charge.
The lobby and restaurants/bars are very nice, and the breakfast buffet excellent. As noted by others, the rooms are a little jaded and a refurb is overdue. We were on floor 8 (non-smoking floor) and the room was smallish and dated but clean. There was one issue in that you could clearly hear footsteps and chairs moving in the Terrace Restaurant directly above, but as this closes at 11pm, it wasn't a major annoyance.
I would say this hotel is fine for a short stay, but has more potential if it was thoughtfully updated.
Nice hotel in good location
from mairebethPerfect!...Without fault.
from metz36On our first night there wasn't a non-smoking room available, so we were put into a smoking room for one night. But, we couldn't smell the difference. Everything was clean and tidy. The bathroom had all the essentials with plenty of towels and hot water. The staff were friendly and attentive...we felt spoilt by the end of our long weekend. Highly recommended, especially if you can get a good rate as part of a package deal.
Good location but a bit old, needs renovating
from cla114For the rest, good service (I had left a book in the room and they found it and gave it to me afterwards). Great thing is the location at walking distance from the central squares, which few other hotels can offer.
Good Hotel
from Scientist-MadLocation wise this hotel is very well placed compared to Marriott/Sheraton or Ritz but I dont think I will be returning here given the choice.
A Pleasant Surprise
from TerriRHWhile the hotel itself derserves a 3-4 stars for appearance, as everything needs a little updating, it more than makes up for in service. The staff was absolutely fabulous regarding every request we made. First of all, I had booked a junior suite, but upon arrival they upgraded us to a 3 room suite with a living room, bedroom, huge marble bathroom and a large foyer. The bathroom had a separate tub and glass enclosed shower, and top quality toiletries. Maid service was twice daily, and every afternoon around 5 pm, china plates with linen napkins were left in our room along with a large platter of wonderful flaky pastries.
The main restaurant off the lobby, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner is quite beautiful and has floor to ceiling glass windows overlooking the Avenue da Liberdad. The food was just so-so. We found many great little restaurants within a 10 minute walk of the hotel.
After seeing the Sheraton and the Ritz I would still choose this hotel again for the location and service.
Top Local Tips for Lisbon
Tourist Card Buy a travel card from one of the metro stations. Our five day card covered all journeys on metro/ bus/ tram/ elevador and at 14 euros each was a bargain. If we had these travel prices in the UK then more of us would use public transport. Do check your metro map before you go as one small section of the metro is still not complete but is shown on most maps as either scheduled for completion in 2004 or for example on our 2007 edition Michelin Map as being complete.
Prelim work Take an open top bus tour asap on your arrival to get your bearings & work from there
Good public transport Check out the public transport web sites before you travel as there and excellent all in one travel card that can be purchased. Lisbon is hilly so going back up to the hotel this may help.
