Historical Traveller Reviews of Tivoli Lisboa Hotel

Top location

from esw1976
We spent 3 nights at the Tivoli, an excellent location for site-seeing as well as evening activities (Bar Alto and restaurents). While perhaps a little business focussed, it was ideal for a city break. A lovely pool, but perhaps a little crowded. Would visit again.

Relaxed and Inconspicuous 5Star Hotel

from sodie69
Super Hotel that offers very comfortable rooms in a great central location. The service was very discreet and seemed effortless. Breakfast was as good as I've sampled anywhere in Europe and the waiting staff were attentive without being "in your face". I would thouroughly reccommend this hotel, great pool area by the way!

Great location in a 4-star charging 5-star prices

from NW_Raven
Looking for a hotel convenient to Lisbon's main walking districts, the Tivoli Lisboa was recommended to me as a good respite from a week's worth of business meetings on Lisbon's outskirts.

Indeed, location is this hotel's prime virtue: on the broad, multi-lane boulevard that runs directly into the heart of the old city. A 15-minute walk takes you to the Rua Augusta pedestrian mall with its large number of patios, bars, restaurants, and shops. Near the hotel are old neighbourhoods, local restaurants, and good transit. The airport is not far, taxis are always around, and a big souvenir shop stands on the same block. The hotel's lovely breakfast buffet room overlooks the boulevard and the facade is easy for a footsore tourist to spot in the evening.

Inside, the lobby is grand and old-fashioned, with lots of room for big groups to arrive, then mingle over a drink later on. The staff are of the experienced, professional type often found in such downtown 5-stars. The feel is old, high-class, but a bit musty.

Unfortunately, the same can be said for my room. While the décor and fittings were all high-quality, they seemed to be from another decade. The drapes and linen had a musty odour and the bathroom a few cracks and shoddy upgrades. The room was small, but with a nice ante-room attached. For the 5-star price, I expected more. Especially since I had just left a better appointed suburban hotel that cost half as much.

My disappointment was compounded by the extremely high cost of any meal or service other than the complimentary buffet breakfast. Fortunately, good eateries frequented by locals are all around the area.

Overall, a decent place but definitely 4-star at 5-star prices paid mainly for the location and prestige.

The best thing for our group was the hidden outdoor pool.

from ohmirose
Huge lobby tastefully furnished, marble floors, whiskey bar, huge dining area on top floor with fantastic view of Lisbon and the ocean from the large balcony. But the best thing was the outdoor pool, tucked away on the 7th floor. Surrounded by trees and tall plants, it was cool even in mid-summer. Nice place to have a drink. Hotel is centrally located on major boulevard. Kind of far from old town, but still walkable.
Our room was not large and I didn't care for the heavy draperies and fussy patterned wallpaper, all in green.

VEry good but not 5*

from Jchm
I have just returned from 3 nights at the Tivoli Lisboa, and I can agree with other postings regarding the hotel. It's certainly a very good 4* level but I could'nt say that it matches other 5* places I have stayed in.

It scores highly for location and service. The staff were excellent in all regards. Our flight out from Manchester was cancelled, so we had to move our booking back by 24 hours - the hotel obliged without fuss or charge.

The lobby and restaurants/bars are very nice, and the breakfast buffet excellent. As noted by others, the rooms are a little jaded and a refurb is overdue. We were on floor 8 (non-smoking floor) and the room was smallish and dated but clean. There was one issue in that you could clearly hear footsteps and chairs moving in the Terrace Restaurant directly above, but as this closes at 11pm, it wasn't a major annoyance.

I would say this hotel is fine for a short stay, but has more potential if it was thoughtfully updated.

Nice hotel in good location

from mairebeth
Just returned from a 3 day trip to Lisbon staying at the hotel tivoli. The hotel was in a good location very easy to walk the city and see the sights. Room was average, clean etc but not 5 star standard. Prices for drinks in the whisky bar were above average, I paid 5 euros for a coffee and for the amount of people staying in the hotel very few were eating or drinking in the restaurants or bars. I would recommend the restaurant La Caffe approximately 5 minutes walk from the hotel same side of street. I have to say the breakfast was excellent, internet accesss is in the lobby area and is for free. Staff are pleasant and helpful - looking at other hotels in the city I have to say this is worth staying in especially if you can get a good deal like I did booking through the internet. The aeroport bus (no 91) stops near the hotel and cost 3 euros one way from the airport.

Perfect!...Without fault.

from metz36
We spent three nights at the Hotel Tivoli Lisboa at the beginning of February 2005 and thoroughly enjoyed it. The breakfast buffet was of the highest quality and the fresh fruits, meats, cereals, (I could go on)...were all in top form. It really made the difference not having to concern ourselves with where to go eat first thing in the morning. We could just walk downstairs and everything we could wish for was laid out in front of us.

On our first night there wasn't a non-smoking room available, so we were put into a smoking room for one night. But, we couldn't smell the difference. Everything was clean and tidy. The bathroom had all the essentials with plenty of towels and hot water. The staff were friendly and attentive...we felt spoilt by the end of our long weekend. Highly recommended, especially if you can get a good rate as part of a package deal.

Good location but a bit old, needs renovating

from cla114
I think in some aspects it is a 5 star hotel (good service, great breakfast) but the rooms are more of a 4 star (like in many other 5 stars all over Europe, I must say). The bathroom was tiny to say the least, all furniture was on the old side, heavy curtains and all... . Other thing, I had booked through Expedia and the hotel did not have any reservation, they gave me a room anyway and did not ask for money (so they probably spoke to Expedia in the meantime), however I'm wondering what would have happened if they had been full....
For the rest, good service (I had left a book in the room and they found it and gave it to me afterwards). Great thing is the location at walking distance from the central squares, which few other hotels can offer.

Good Hotel

from Scientist-Mad
Stayed here for 2 nights from 3rd to 5th Dec. I agree with other reviews that it is more of a 3-4 star hotel rather than 5*. Room was basic and the double bed was really small. Bathroom was clean but there was mould on the grout and tiles were cracked. Breakfast was really good - buffet style with lots of different kind of bread, juices, cereal, and a vast selection of hot and cold dishes. We had lunch once in the main restaurant downstairs which was ok. Had dinner at the terrace grill bar with lovely views and fantastic service though I must warn that the terrace grill is definitely not for people on budget.

Location wise this hotel is very well placed compared to Marriott/Sheraton or Ritz but I dont think I will be returning here given the choice.

A Pleasant Surprise

from TerriRH
I was hesitant when booking this hotel, not knowing much about it. I chose it for what looked like a perfect location for a quick trip to Lisbon.
While the hotel itself derserves a 3-4 stars for appearance, as everything needs a little updating, it more than makes up for in service. The staff was absolutely fabulous regarding every request we made. First of all, I had booked a junior suite, but upon arrival they upgraded us to a 3 room suite with a living room, bedroom, huge marble bathroom and a large foyer. The bathroom had a separate tub and glass enclosed shower, and top quality toiletries. Maid service was twice daily, and every afternoon around 5 pm, china plates with linen napkins were left in our room along with a large platter of wonderful flaky pastries.
The main restaurant off the lobby, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner is quite beautiful and has floor to ceiling glass windows overlooking the Avenue da Liberdad. The food was just so-so. We found many great little restaurants within a 10 minute walk of the hotel.
After seeing the Sheraton and the Ritz I would still choose this hotel again for the location and service.

Top Local Tips for Lisbon

Tourist Card Buy a travel card from one of the metro stations. Our five day card covered all journeys on metro/ bus/ tram/ elevador and at 14 euros each was a bargain. If we had these travel prices in the UK then more of us would use public transport. Do check your metro map before you go as one small section of the metro is still not complete but is shown on most maps as either scheduled for completion in 2004 or for example on our 2007 edition Michelin Map as being complete.

Prelim work Take an open top bus tour asap on your arrival to get your bearings & work from there

Good public transport Check out the public transport web sites before you travel as there and excellent all in one travel card that can be purchased. Lisbon is hilly so going back up to the hotel this may help.
