Top Local Tips for Lisbon

The park - Calouste Gulbenkian The museum is really great, but the reward is the beautiful park you can lay down for a siesta in the shadow after lunch ;-)

The best parts of our trip to Portugal Our favorite parts were a half day tour of the city, Alfama, side trips to Sintra (do not miss the National Pena Palace, most amazing castle I have ever seen), Obidos (walking the walls of this amazing walled city), Nazare, Setubal, following the aquaducts through the countryside full of olives and grapes (near Fatima), seeing the storks on the Troia peninsula, the cork trees, the wind turbines everywhere, and we were able to drive right up to them (amazing!), and the pottery. If you're going to buy pottery do it outside of Lisbon, the best we found was in the town with Santa MariaDe Alcobaca Abbey, an amazing little town with great shopping and the Abbey has the most amazing tombs. We just happened on it while driving around. Wish we had more time to see the Algarve and the Northern areas. Next Time!!!

Take the ferry to Cacilhas! We read this tip in the Marco Polo guide: reatuarant Atira-Te A O Rio (Throw yourself in the River!) accross the Tejo for lunch. (From the ferry turn right and follow the quay for about 800 mts). We didn't make reservations beforehand and that nearly broke us up: there was a sign "reserved" on every empty table. Luckily for us the very friendly waiter put in an extra table on the outside terrace and we the had the lunch of our life: sunny sunday afternoon with a splendid Chef's Choice, a delicious bottle Vinho Verde and a great view on the city.
