Perfect - Exceptional - World Class

Pestana Palace - Situated on one of Lisbon's Seven Hills, yes, Rome also has Seven Hills, but today we're in Lisbon. We were fortunate enough to be in Lisbon in October of 2005, and were fortunate enough to have booked the Pestana Palace located in an upscale residential district. We arrived by taxi from the airport, and were treated to the FACT the Portugal now hold's first place in Europe for the worst drivers, the taxi is inexpensive from the airport, as are taxis throughout the city. They prove to be the perfect venue for a private tour of Lisbon on our second day. As you arrive at the hotel you enter under a portico and you are immediately greeted, and your luggage is whisked away. You are guided up the stairs to the reception desk which is amazingly small, but by the time we arrive they have been told our names and have our keys are ready. We requested a garden view room with a terrace. Our desk person comes out and guides us to our room, explaining the Pestana Palace's history, and explains different areas of the hotel to us. The main building (the original Palace built in 1907) holds many common rooms for the guest use, and the restaurant, but more on this later, and four suites, priced in the area of $1500 us per night, depending upon the season. Exceptional so far, and fully five star luxury. The Pestana Palace has an additional 190+ room set in two wings from the main building, and between the wings is the tropical gardens which were much more impressive than the "de 'hortus" which we just visited in Amsterdam. Our arrival on a Sunday limited our choices of restaurants in Lisbon and we chose to eat at the hotels restaurant 'Valle Flor", our first look at the menu is in the restaurant's forir. I have on my jacket and may wife is dressed in her best, (we're going on the silver seas cruise beginning in Lisbon). The menu is intimidating, and we are professional diners, we both rate for Zagat and are travel writers. We chose to enter and are greeted warmly, restaurants serve late in Lisbon, and the towns night life goes on till 2 am+, much too late for us. Just a note, we speak english, and can get by with phrases in 5-6 languages, but everyone we have been in contact with speaks perfect english from the airport to the cruise ship. Back to the menu, its more intimidating as we sit, I decide on the Young Bull aged in the dregs of reserve port wine. The we both decide to chose their pre fixed "Discover / Explorer" dinner, which sample through most of the main dishes we were looking at. Less than 100 euro PP. And I allow the restaurant to pair a wine to each course, well actually we try 6 wines with the 6-7 courses. We have had these types of pre fixed meals before and have been both thrilled and stopped and McDonald's after words. This meal is world class, the dishes are well though out, and expertly prepared and presented. The wine choices begin at the traditional Vinho Verde, (Green Wine) and progress perfectly to some reserve reds form Portugal. On red is so perfectly balanced and full I ask that they write it down for me to buy tomorrow on Monday. The meal and wines were five star. The dining room and dinner service just perfect, we tip accordingly. When back in the room, I plan on when to go to buy the wines I just drank. My guide book gives me the address and information about the shop, and tells me that its closed on Mondays along with the Maritime Museum which we had planned to visit on Monday. The joys of traveling. I have attached photos and am willing to answer any questions you may have. We booked directly with the hotel on their website, we E-mailed back and forth 3 times to get what we wanted confirmed. Booking through expedia etc will get you a lesser quality room, no view and a poorer experience, you get what you pay for, and you always get better service and more control of your reservation dealing direct. If there was nothing in Lisbon but the Pestana Palace and its 'Valle Flor" restaurant, this alone would make Lisbon a world class destination. Yes, we will return to the Pestana Palace.
Fabulous hotel

The Pestana Palace Hotel in Lisbon is one of the nicest experiences we have had in recent travels. The public areas are in the older palatial mansion with stained glass windows, a beautiful chapel, beautiful woodwork and magnificiently painted ceilings. The room are in two modern wings, ours with a large patio overlooking the absolutely georgeous gardens with walking paths leading to a beautiful swimming pool and spa. The area is quiet and away from the downtown which can be reach by the hotel's free shuttle.
If you want a tour of Sintra, Fatima etc, we can vouch for the Tours for You tours. Our van was new and the guide spoke excellent English, had a college degree and was delightful.

We stayed at the Pestana for 3 nights after spending 10 days in the Algarve. We got a deal through expedia and paid about £95 a night for a double room including breakfast. This was an absolute bargain. The hotel is beautiful - the public rooms in the former palace part of the hotel are amazing, the service is impeccable and the gardens and pool are perfect. I am astounded by the complaints of one poster that the hotel was dirty and smelt of food - our experience was blissful - so much so that we barely left the hotel during our 3 days in Lisbon. I hope that we will get the chance to go back to this hotel again as coming home to a lack of rose petals in the toilet bowl, cold eucalyptus scented flannels to mop my brow or chocs on the pillow at night has left me pining.

I stay this summer in the pestana of lisboa and i had a very big decepcion with the rooms.They are old, little and the bathroom too.The rest of the hotel is very good, but i think that the rooms are for a three stars hotel.

Amazing Place to Stay

What a wonderful hotel - I would recomend it to anyone! My husband and I stayed there for 2 weeks for our honeymoon.
To be honest I really dont know where to start. The staff are SOOOO friendly and helpful. We had emailed them several times about what sort of room we wanted, and when we arrived a wonderful man called Andre said he had chosen a room for us and it was wonderful - if you can, ask for a room with a balcony. They are on the ground floor but raised up slightly - so private.
We were given VIP treatment when we got there - they sprinkled rose pettles on our bed, a bottle of champage and fresh cherrys - a wonderful surprise to start the honeymoon.
The hotel is just amazing - every room in the main part of the hotel is spectacular! The gardens are lovely to stroll through. Have lunch in the little restaurant just up from the pool! The only slight disppointment was the size of the swimming pool and on a hot day (especiallly the weekend) it can get very busy!
The main restaurant in the hotel is something that cannot be missed! Food was out of this world and well worth the money. And the service was to die for!
The hotel is just out of the centre in a nice area, but taxis are quite cheap and the trams are great! Be careful that the tram just outside the hotel does finish at 7.30 pm, so if you go out in the evening plan for a taxi!
The staff are also very helpful with directions and booking a car etc.
Also if you want a wonderful night ask about the Fado night in the Lapa area - Full to the brim and wonderful. Music was so wonderful and expressive - we dont speak any portugese but you coul tell the emotion through the singing. We had a lovely couple sitting next to us who translated for us in the end.

A Peaceful Oasis

I am shocked to see an individual who found the Pestana to be dirty and old literally the same weeks I stayed there. It did smell of cigarettes--which every hotel and restaurant in Lisbon also does. That individual's issue may have been colored by the spouse being robbed nearby, something that can happen in any big city. Lisbon is no exception. One takes care--dusk is the worst time. This is a residential neighborhood and not prone to this level of crime.
With regard to the hotel, it is spectacularly charming--it is indeed a restored palace with beautiful gardens, an indoor spill pool that is deep blue, very clean, no cholrine spell, a small spa, and peace beyond ones wildest dreams in frenetic Lisbon. There is a lovely outdoor pool also. The staff could not be more accommodating. Most are bilingual. There are fresh chocolate truffles and Port wine at the front desk for the taking, free internet, excellent business services, fruit in the spa, and help finding anything you may wish, at reasonable costs. The rooms are pleasant and, unless you stay in the main palace itself, you will not have a palatial room All rooms are nicely appointed tho. I travel a great deal. I would easily travel "across the pond" again just to stay here and visit Sintra and other more rural points nearby--also the pristine beaches above Cascais. The Pestana is very convenient using inexpensive taxis--incidentally, the taxi drivers are wonderfiul--albeit most have a killer driving instinct. Most speak some english (American) and are pleasant. One told us the tip was too large and gave us some Euros back!
So staying at the Penstana Palace does not put you out of reach of the main city at all. It is just plain lovely and flawless with regard to service. Of the large city hotels in which I have stayed, I would rate this as one of the top 3...I felt so rested and cared for so well. (be prepared for board-hard beds tho--that's the wayof the Portuguese everywhere). The restaurant is very Portuguese and quite expensive, albeit beautiful. I do not think you could go wrong here, unless you were robbed in transit.

A Real Palace

Just finished a 2 week vacation through southern Spain and Portugal, staying at 5 of the top hotels in the region. The Pestana Palace was my favorite, with the Alfonso XIII in Seville a close second. The Palace features a number of beautiful drawing rooms and bar (all with 20' ceilings), a great place to read the paper, have a drink, listen to the piano in the evening, etc. (the photos online are representative of the property). Large, well appointed gardens (the best garden I found in Lisbon). Nice formal room (request a room overlooking the garden). Found the staff and service to be exceptional -- very friendly and helpful -- and most of the other hotels had really bad service, especially the Alfonso. The Palace is a bit out of the way (though just a 5 Euro ride to the city center), but since Lisbon itself if quite dirty, I considered this a plus. The free business center was also a nice perk. If in Lisbon, make sure you visit Sintra -- and make sure you take the time to climb to the top of the castle. The view is breathtaking -- you can see the ocean, immaculate estates, etc. (then you can relax afterward in the Cafe des Paris in Sintra -- a very quaint little restaurant).

We just spent two nights at Pestana Palace, booked on a "hot deal" from their website at just 170 euros per room per night half-board.
This was just incredible value.
We were very impressed by the efficiency and courtesy of the staff. We arrived at 12 noon, but there was an upgraded garden view room ready for us. We were also given a room to shower and change in at 3.30pm on the day we left, which meant that we were able to enjoy a pretty full three days in Lisbon.
We didn't make full use of the half board as we ate out one evening, but our dinner at the Valle Flor restaurant made the package an even better bargain.
Lisbon is a great short break destination, and I wouldn't hesitate to stay at the Pestana palace again.

Not a 5-star service, to say the least

The palace is a historical place, no doubt. I expected a five-star service. Unfortunately, it is not what I got. I would say one of the worst 4-stars... you can smell food everywhere, doors in need of repair, dirty carpets... Service slow and unattentive. Perhaps lack of staff for a five-star, no? Room service you wait for hours and then they bring you the wrong order.
The surroundings are not very recommendable either. My husband has been robbed just outside the hotel. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone...

A great place to stay

What a great hotel. Staff are very curtious and attentive. Rooms luxurious. Pool and gym facilities great. Couldn't fault it. Have stayed there a number of times and love it. We also take our little dog with us and they all love her.
Top Local Tips for Lisbon
Bairro Alto The restaurants are all quite similar, offering traditional 'Fado' music while you dine. This may sound very touristy and attractive, but the music is quite sad...even a bit depressing!! Dinner is served in between each performance of 3 songs, following which the artist tries to sell copies of his/her CD. If you treat it as a cultural experience, it is fine....just don't expect to be jumping out of your seat with excitement!!
National Tile Museum/ Museu Nacional do Azulejo Go see the national tile museum! It is stunningly beautiful. The painted of tiles is a traditional portugese craft, which they certainly turned into an art form. The museum shows various types of tiles, tile paintings, rooms decorated with tiles and modern art works which use tiles. It is located in an old convent, which includes a large church, which is also quite stunning. The museum also has a very nice cafe, which is worth visiting. The location is a bit off site, so either you go for a fairly long walk (which we did), take a bus or a taxi.
Go for the 5stars locations in the city center... ...try to bookthe York House in the city center. It is close to hip places, not really expensive and impressive nice.

It was wonderful to come back after a hard days sight seeing in the city to relax in the bar with coffees and a few whiskies and to be serenaded by a superb pianist!
Our only disappointment is that we didn't have more time to try out the swimming pool and other leisure facilities.
A wonderful hotel in a lovely city. Certainly a place to return to.
