Top Local Tips for Lisbon
Great City - so much to see A taxi to the Vaso De Gama mall is about 7 Euros - very prety over there. Was once the place for the Wold Expo in 98. Great stores - but your typical mall. Walk down Liberdade and get down to the Barrio and Baixa. there is so much to see. If you are going to get a Country book before you go.. get the DK on Portugal... it tells you everything... lots to see.... but if you are coming from the States - be prepared - its expensive because our dollar is not very strong against the euro. Oh and by the way.... you DON"T have to tip every one... 1 or 2 euros the most... NYC girls can't help it... and then we were told by our friends who live there... not to do that...
We found .... ... that the airport bus was an excellent way to get too and from the hotel. The stop is literally five paces from the front of the hotel. Sintra is a must if you have time - the train journey was quick, efficient and extremely cheap €3.60 return. The Castle Sao Jorge area was gorgeous with spectacular views over Lisbon. We found all the restaurants we tried were very good - enjoyed the Fado restaurant in the centre - for the atmosphere more than the food. Wouldn't specifically recommend any in particular - you just have to have a wander up the little streets to find really nice, not so touristy, places.
stay central I recommend a very central location. On the map it may looked quite central, but Lisbon is a very large city. The buses take a bit of effort to figure out and the last hing I want to do is running around looking for bus routes.
