The Hotel Monumental Lido is in a good position & an easy walk into Funchal, the Hotel is clean, with friendly staff, towels changed when ever they were left on the floor.
Beer cost a lot more in the hotel than in the bars out side.( 3.40 euros at the bar, 2.80 euros pool bar. White House Pub 5 minute walk 2.50 euro ). We had a great holiday except the food in the hotel was a bit limited,(we were on half board) & the rooms at the back overlooking the countryside were noisy at night with traffic into the early hours. Bins were emptied at midnight.

We had a half board, late booking with Portland and took our teenage daughter for a week in the sunshine. On arrival we were quite impressed with the hotel, and the rooms were extremely comfortable and spacious. The maids worked extremely hard to keep the rooms clean all the time and were always friendly and kind.
The restaurant was buffet and downstairs at pool level. We were shown to our table and had to dine at the same table each evening, but breakfast we could sit where we pleased.
The food was fairly good, always a good choice and every night a different fish dish. No choice much for vegetarians though. Breakfast not really up to much except fruit, rolls, pastries and jam, not the typical excellent traditional English fayre that we have had in other 4* hotels abroad. The waitress we had on most evenings was excellent and really hardworking. The restaurant manager was extremely biased to certain nationalities though because he refused my husband entry to the restaurant the first night as he happened to be wearing knee length smart shorts, however the Portuguese guests and Germans were allowed in, wearing their shorts and nothing was said to them. Also the same can be said for reserving of sunloungers around the pool. If you happen to be British you will be scolded by pool attendant for doing it, but this doesn't apply if guests Portuguese or German. The snack bar around the pool serves very tasty lunchtime snacks if you have missed breakfast or are peckish.
Madeira was absolutely beautiful and we had a wonderful stay, despite the hotel restaurant hitches. We will definitely return to Madeira, however would prefer a hotel closer to the town centre, because even though taxis are readily available outside the hotel and reasonably priced, it is nice to be within walking distance of the marina, without a hike of about 2miles up and down hills. We took a taxi ride up into the West side of the mountains with Bernardino for almost a whole day, and it was so much nicer that a coach tour as we had our own personal guide who was able to pull in for photo shoots where a coach would not be able to. Believe it or not it cost us the same amount as the coach trips. The casino was a very entertaining evening too, taking in the Vegas style show and then down into the casino for a bit of roulette. My husband was extremely impressed with how reasonably priced the drinks were inside the casino. Our teenage daughter absolutely loved her holiday also, as there were shopping malls all over with sales on.

Many thanks to the medical and reception staff for their help and kindness shown to me after my accident on saturday. I would happily return to the Monumental Lido because of the friendly staff who take great care of their guests. The location is convenient for buses and coach tours. Food is well cooked and presented, rooms were cleaned properly every day with towels changed, pool attendants kept up a good supply of sunbeds and brollies. All in all a very well organised hotel, run by a caring staff.
