Historical Traveller Reviews of Hotel Vila Gale Tavira

Eating

from Tobee
Don't bother with dinner - e.g. fish appears frozen bought-in type yet good market for fresh fish 2min. walk away. Eat in town, or better still, Santa Luzia 5 min. by car or bus.

A great hotel; a fantastic bargain!

from Mark_Liechelle
Thanks to the internet, and based on other TripAdvisor reviews, we were able to get eight days at this hotel for €330 (thats around €20 per person per night). For this we got a ground floor pool side room and buffet breakfast which has got to be fantastic value in anyone's money.

We booked via Portimar who organised the room and taxi transfer from Faro airport. A word of warning here: Portimar do not have a secure (encrypted) website so don't go giving them your credit card details by e-mail. Instead phone or fax the details as we did.

The hotel is all that previous reviewers have claimed and really lives up to its four star reputation. The buffet brakfast is huge with everything you could want, from lashings of fresh fruit to hot and cold meats, eggs, cereals and pastries. If one wanted to niggle, one could complain that the coffee was Nescafe rather than ground, but the rest of the breakfast more than made up for that.

Other minor niggles were the need to wear swimming caps in the indoor pool (cost €2 from the gym reception) and the lack of in-room tea and coffee making facillities. But, as I said, the positives with this hotel more than outweighed the minor inconveniences.

The week we stayed it was unseasonally wet which precluded sunbathing by the outdoor pool but we found more than enough to do. Among our recommendations for local activities would be:- Tavira mini-train trip (good for getting an introduction to the town), The "Camera Obscura" built into the old town water tower, taking a boat trip to the island beach and bird watching in the salt marshes.

Further afield, one can take the single track Algarve railway to Faro or, in the other direction, to Vila Real Santo Antonio for a couple of euros each way. Vila Real has some good linen and casual wear shops (a fleece jacket for €12!) but not much to see otherwise. However, from there you can take a ferry across the river to Ayamunte in Spain, which is a very attractive town.

Tavira has some excellent value restaurants that others have commented on. Our favourite was Bica, to the east of the Roman bridge. This was not much to look at but served us an amazing three course meal, including Tuna steak, desert, a bottle of wine and water, all for €26 for 2 persons! The other thing we liked about Tavira was the total absence of Macdonalds, Pizza Hut or KFC - long may it remain so!

In summary, the Hotel Vila Gale, Tavira offers Holiday Inn quality at Travelodge prices, while Tavira town provides enough interest and Portuguese atmosphere to provide an excellent holiday - whatever the weather.

Relaxing at the Vila Gale

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I stayed at the Vila Gale for 7 nights from the 26th November 2005. Having done plenty of research(thanks to Tripadvisor), we picked this hotel and got the best rates from agency based in Portamao called Portimar. We were looking for somewhere to relax and Tavira was the place to do this. It is a quaint fishing town.
Beautiful 4* hotel with good location. Used a lot by golfers as a base. 5 min. walk across bridge to where most restaurants are. The only other big hotel here is the Nova but it is up on a hill further away.
We found the Patio restaurant the best for atmosphere and food. Never paid more than €40 for both of us including wine in any restaurant and most give you free port at the end. Maybe this was because it was out of season - maybe not. The exception to this was in the hotel. On late check-in at 9pm, we were given voucher for free bottle of wine if we dined in the hotel restaurant. Being so late, we opted to eat here. We both had fillet steak (very nice) but it cost us over €50. Coffee in hotel costs €2 - across the road it costs €1.10. (No tea/coffee facilities in room.)
Just across the road are salt marshes where you can walk for miles catching glimpses of all kinds of birds including flamingos. Very relaxing.
Courtesy bus to beach departs mostly every hour. It actually brings you to sister hotel 5 mins. away and from there you get boat belonging to hotel to island 2 mins. Lovely sandy beach. Cost for boat €1 return.
We also went to Spain - train station 10 mins. walk from hotel (beside Lidl). Got train to Vile San Antonio (20 mins) €1.45 each way. 5 min. walk to ferry.
Ferry 10 mins. across river €1.20 each way. Goes back and forth constantly. Beware Spain is 1 hr ahead of Portugal so timetable for return can be confusing.
Rooms in hotel are spacious with mini bar (expensive as usual). Best to get room on left with poolview as rooms on right don't get any sun.
Safe in room but you have to rent the key.
Bring your own towels or you can hire them €1 each.
Girls bring moisturiser as this is not included in the bathroom stuff.
Last but not least when you enter your room, you will get nice surprise when you see the size of the bed!!! Looks like king bed. But when cover is removed, all you have is 2 twin beds each made up. All rooms are the same. No way you can play footsy or poke him when he snores. Beware!!!
Overall this hotel was exceptional value at €15 B/B pp pn. Wouldn't get a hostel here in Dublin for that and we like our comfort. Would definitely go back here to unwind.

Absolutely brilliant!

My wife and I stayed at this hotel in August 2005. Everything about it was excellent. The staff were some of the most friendly, polite and helpful we have ever come across, they made us feel very welcome and made our stay a very pleasant one. The rooms are spacious and we had a lovely balcony overlooking the pool which incidentally was wonderful - never too crowded even in august. Tavira itself is a lovely relaxed town with good places to eat in the evening. It's worth crossing the roman bridge to find some excellent restaurants on the other side. The beach (accessed by boat) is tranquil and if you're prepared to walk for 10 minutes from where you get off the boat you can find a little space all to yourself. I'd recommend taking a few supplies with you ie. food and water as there's not really any places to buy stuff on the beach itself. We would definitely reccommend Tavira and the Vila Gale Hotel!

Good Value Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed here in late Nov-05. Granted this was off-season, but the room rate of €35 per night was a terrific deal. The hotel is of a good standard and deserves it rating. Facilities are good & the breakfast buffet is good given that it was included in the €35 nightly rate.

The rooms can be a bit noisy [I found I could hear quite a bit of noise from neighouring rooms] but otherwise fine and there was no exterior noise from traffic/ parties as has been described by other reviewers.

The only other downside is the location of the hotel which is mediocre (on the outskirts of the town and beside a petrol station/ vacant lot). I would say that hiring a car is essential if you want to stay here. Parking within the hotels' underground car park is extra, but at €25 per week this is good value.

That said, it is a great place from which to explore the Algarve or to stay if on a golf trip. I would recommend it, especially if you get a good deal on room rates, and mainly want to use the hotel as a base.

Just great

Spent 3/4 nights here end of August (after the rush) with husband and 7 year old son. It worked really well. Rooms around central courtyard with large pool. Make sure to get pool view. It was hot then but great to return to airconditioned room from the sun. Lovely large marble lobby also soothing after heat.
Great choice for breakfast. Advise eating dinner out - 10 minutes walk to wide selection of restaurants.
Underground car park well worth 4.50 euros per day. Easy to reach from Faro, lots to see in town and along the coast, ferry to island beach most enjoyable for a change.
We'd go back to explore further.

Brilliant weeks break

from A TripAdvisor Member
Have just returned from a weeks break here. Cannot say enough about it, the staff and facilities were excellent. The rooms were cleaned daily, with fresh towels, toiletries etc. The food was lovely and dining room spacious. Would recommend this to all ages.

Tavira itself is still unspoiled, even though there are plenty of bars and restaurants around. If you want a good relaxing holiday this is definately the place to go.

Excellent Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
I spent a week here with my partner in early July. Excellent service and facilities, with a spacious room overlooking the Pool. Minor problem with noise from the bar (room directly above bar), but nothing to complain about. Breakfast buffet was more than enough to last all day. Tried the BBQ on the Saturday night which was excellent, but used local places to eat for the rest of the week. Would recommend the Bica and Patio in Tivira and Ideal in Cababas. A very nice hotel in a quieter part of Portugal.

Gret hotel

My boyfriend and I stayed in this hotel in June. We found it a lovely place to stay. It was kept very clean and the buffet breakfasts were lovely. Food at lunch time was not so great and we did not sample the dinner menu, but instead went to loads of very nice local restaurants.

The pool area was very spacious and well maintained. We had a pool side room and this was ideal, we heard very little noise from the bar area.

Brilliant Hotel!!

My wife and I really enjoyed our week at this hotel. The room was spacious and comfortable. We were not too happy with the views from the room we were originally allocated looking over a car park and flyover but this was quickly rectified and we were transfered to a room with a much better view. The breakfasts were buffet style and excellent, everything you could wish for. We ate in the hotel on two evenings sampling the buffet dinner. This again was excellent and good value for money for around 18 euros per head. We really liked the spacious feel of the hotel particularly around the pool area, you never felt crowded in, although that could be in part due to our being there in June away from the peak season. We didn't realise you had to pay for the underground parking, around 25 euros for the week, but we didn't mind, it's worth it because it makes thing so much easier and parking outside can be a problem. Tavira is a charming town and the location is ideal to explore the eastern Algarve. A trip to Ayamonte in Spain a short drive away is reccomended and Vila Real is definately worth a visit. All in all a great holiday, we will definately stay at this hotel again!

Top Local Tips for Tavira

Places to Eat Check out the restaurants and cafes along the riverside and over the bridge. i.e. friendly chinese restuarant and pizza house

comfortable shoes make sure you pack the most comfortable shoes you have as virtualy every street, walkway, is similar to cobble stones and can be very hard on the old feet, they also come up sometimes so always be aware

Where to dine Try the restaurants over the Roman Bridge, very reasonable and good quality, avoid the restaurants near where the boat trips go from as they rip you off (see other reviews for more details), For snacks go over the road.
