Top Local Tips for Sintra

Take te train Don't drive in Sintra - there are enough cars already. Take the train from Lisboa. Trains depart from many stations every 15 minutes and the ride is only 1,65 Euro as of March 2008. It takes lss than an hour.

Don't bother about the Palacio National in Sintra & go early to the Palacio Pena Ok, the kitchen is cool with its funny chimneys, but there isn't much to see. Go to the Quinta de Regeira instead. We arrived at the Palacio Pena arount lunch time after walking up from Sintra and the queue was unbelievable (in April). We went early the next day and it was fine, worth the second trip.

Highlights of Sintra Sintra was my favorite destination on our two week trip. Although many people seem to do it as a day trip to Lisbon, I was very pleased with our decision to stay overnight. Driving from Lisbon, we visited Queluz Palace en route and then spent the afternoon/early evening in Sintra. Our hotel, Tivoli Sintra was across the street from the National Palace which had great wooden ceilings and decorative rooms. Given the winding, steep roads, we decided to leave the car and take the bus that went to Pena Palace, Pena Park and the Moorish Castle. We walked back to Sintra from the Moorish Castle. The following day we drove to Monserrate, Convento do Capuchos and Cabo do Roca. If we'd had more time to enjoy Cascais and Estoril, we could easily have spend a second night in Sintra.
