stuffy rooms

Hotel Tivioli in Lagos, Portugal has a good location in the town and a nice but small & unheated pool and tennis court on the beach which is a nice perk. However, all the rooms are stuffy and outdated -- we had to really push to get a better room with a somewhat decent view. Service was poor.

we stayed here in 2003....advised to us by the agent and didnt let us down. Rooms are basic and not as impressive as the main hotel. Breakfast is great with plenty to choose from and the hotel is well situated. Balconies are small but ok.

Beware of the egg!!!!!!!

Excellent week -loved it

The Tivoli is a rambling pile of excellent rooms and facilities on several floors. Pity the lifts are scarce! My wife and I stayed bed and breakfast and enjoyed the many restaurants within easy walking distance for lunches and dinners.

Breakfast in the hotel was buffet style with a good choice, although kippers and black pudding never featured. But there was a reasonable variety with lots of fresh fruit, cerals, breads, pastries and cooked English grilled favourites.

The room was very clean and reasonably spacious with a marble bathroom. Nice pool area. The bar is huge and there is a happy hour cocktail session every evening with free nibbles. The evening entertainment would have been paid off in most clubs, but so what! The staff are underpaid yet very friendly and courteous.

The old town is within ten minutes walk and is quite interesting with its mosaic cobbles. The marina is only five minutes walk. There was an excellent bar and simple restaurant just outside of the hotel owned by Luis who is everyones friend and made us very welcome. We used to call in there on our way back before our nightcap in the hotel.

Anyone would enjoy staying at the Tivoli.

My husband and I go to the Algarve every January in order to get away from the British gloom, and chill out after the Christmas rush. The weather is usually fantiastic. This year was no exception. We booked this hotel through Expedia but I checked the reviews first on this site, so I had an idea what to expect, but it was better than I expected.

I agree that the rooms could do with a touch of refurbishment but they weren't as bad as I expected from the reviews. They were very clean and I liked the marble tiled bathrooms. The hotel is very spacious and has a light airy feel about it, pleasing atmosphre. In the evenings there was a roaring log fire you could sit in really comfy sofas and drink your port.

My only disappointment was that I couldn't use the indoor pool much because there always seemed to be some class going on in the evenings,

Even in January, we went to the beach every day, and there was a fabulous cafe on the beach (Linda's), served great food and mulled wine! They had a sister restaurant called Os Cais at the Marina, not cheap but great food and wine. We did try one of the hotel restaurants once, but it wasn't good and I wouldn't recommend it.

Lagos is beautiful and the hotel is so central so you can walk everywhere, and Lagos is well worth exploring on foot. Handy for exploring the western Algarve We found the all the staff helpful and friendly, and I would definitely go back to the hotel again.

The hotel was fantastic, not too far away from the town centre of Lagos, only a 5 minute walk, the rooms were clean and tidy, helpful staff, we loved it and will be going back next year.

Comfortable, once you calibrate to a three star hotel

This was our second stop in Portugal and we'd just come from a fabulous new hotel near Lisbon. We chose this primarily based on location, reviews and price. I think I expected more based on the reviews, but considering we paid about 100 euros a night for a club room, it wasn't bad. It seemed like a converted apartment building. It was clean and we had a living room with a bedroom. The breakfast buffet was good and the people at the front desk were nice and helpful. However, it reminded me of a good, "value" hotel for tourists.

With all that said, the bright spot for the hotel was the Duna Beach Club. The beach was beautiful, the pool nice and we enjoyed spending a couple of hours there each day before heading out to tour other areas.

Preceding comments from other reviewers regarding spareness of rooms, lack of amenities, etc. are somewhat petty. Simply put, the Tivoli Lagos is a terrific base from which to explore the winding walking streets of Lagos itself or to use as a springboard to the Algarve beaches. My wife & I found the hotel clean and tidy and the staff quite helpful. Although we are not as fond of the Algarve per se as we are of Mid to Northern Portugal, as the Algarve is completely overrun with package tours from Scandinavia, Germany & Britain, and has lost much of the charm it must once have had, it is still a fun place to spend a few nights (the area of Lisbon, Sintra, and the Port Wine Country along the Douro River and to Porto are certainly more reminiscent of an older, more refined and charming "traditional" Portugal). However, people go to Portugal for different reasons: if you want old world sophistication, it's there; if you want to get sloshed every night and go to the bars and discos until 4am, well, that's there, too. You can have both. Point being, this is a terrific, central location for exploration of the Algarve. Be sure to get lost navigating Lagos' twisty, winding streets, which are filled with great restaurants and wine bars. One night, we stumbled into a darkened alley-like maze of streets, from which we ended up at a mildly seedy looking restaurant where we sat with locals and a 3 generation gathering of a family from the Netherlands. After a few bottles of the local vinho and a dish of the most flavorful fish I may have ever experienced, plus hours of laughter and conversation, we were all the best of friends, despite our outward cultural, national and language barriers. Also, be sure to take advantage entirely of the Duna Beach Club, only about a 15 minute bus drive from the hotel. Sun, great food, beer and wine, and a lovely beach. Now that's a holiday!

The Rough Guide to The Algarve had this spot on: central location but rooms on small side and staff can be quite surly.

Our first reaction when shown the room was disappointment - probably borne out of greater expectation (and the fact we were given a twin room instead of a double). The outdoor pool was empty - of water! And as the hotel got busier, parking in the free car park / field got more problematic.

However, it is in a great location, facilities are pretty good (though you have to pay to use health club / gym!) and we generally enjoyed our stay.

I guess the 4 stars have been granted because all the boxes can just about be ticked. Or they're reflective of the hotel's younger days. I would say a good 3-star hotel!

Wonderful Hotel

We stayed here last summer in August for 4 days after getting a reasonably cheap deal off the internet. I had my reserves about it but I actually had an absolutely fantastic time: the hotel was excellent and Lagos, beautiful. The hotel has a free shuttle bus that takes you back and forth to a lovely clean beach, but if you're feeling more adventurous you can find lots of other beautiful views and little beaches along the coast on foot or can even go on a tour of the grottos in a boat (should try this!) Receptionist staff are very helpful in recommending the best places to go...

The breakfast laid on everyday at the hotel was fantastic, HOWEVER, would NOT recommend eating in the hotel, we ate in the Italian section on the first day and the food was mediocre and over-priced and the waiter was not very nice! Down in the town there is a cheap restaurant (I wish I could remember the name) which sells simple, but delicious Portugese meals, and seems to be where all the locals go and often has a queue outside so must be good!!

wonderful stay

My partner and I stayed at this hotel for a week in August 2004 and would highly recommend it to anyone. It was clean, well looked after and the staff were very friendly. It is well located for the beach and was only a ten min walk into Lagos Town. The beach club is well worth a visit, with its comfy sunbeds and quiet position.
There was a wide choice at the breakfast buffet, which was constantly filled up.
There is a good pool outside where you can order drinks and food from your sunlounger.

Top Local Tips for Lagos

Hire a car Hire a car to make the most of the beautiful coastline in this region. Many of the beaches aren't acessible from the resorts and a car gives you access to a wider range of beaches, many of which are tucked away in little coves at the bottom of cliffs - get your map out!

Lagos - English or German If you're looking for a holiday where everyone speaks English and menus are catered for the English and German markets the Lagos is for you.

Where to eat in Lagos... Bahia beach bar, Escondidinho, Linda Bar, Estrela Do Mar, Bar Ferradura (pork steak sandwich), Adega da MArina. All the restaurants mentioned are Mostly Portugese cuisine. Highly recommended.
