Historical Traveller Reviews of Stella Maris Hotel Apartments

Literally away from it all!

from GilbertSinclair
The apartments are excellent, spacious, well equipped and ours was spotlessly clean on arrival. Whilst we enjoyed our stay there were several things we would like to have known about before booking. The first is that once you are at the apartments that is pretty much where you have to stay. A transfer bus runs intermittantly from the hotel to various local towns, but this is very expensive and not always available. Taxis cannot be pre-booked and likewise are not always available. On arrival at midday we were told our room would not be ready until between 4.00 to 5.00 pm, which as we had an early start was dreadful, for those with young children it was a disaster. The cleaning takes place very late in the day, so if you have to use the sofa bed in the sitting room area then either you have to sort it out yourself, or it sits unmade all day long. Staff shortages seem to be the order or the day, the reception staff need better English. The bar staff were first class and worked like Trojans, there should have been more of them. How they maintained their sense of humour at times was a mystery. The pool is nice, but cool. The small garden area is a wonderful bonus. There are a few shops along the road, the supermakret stocks everything from tea bags to marmalade. The other places are eating houses of various sorts offering the only alternative to the hotel buffet, which is expensive. All in all I would go back but I would hire a car if I wanted to explore the country.

Fab Break

We stayed at the Stella Maris for a short break in June and had a wonderful time. It is in a very quite resort, about 30 mins form faro airport, perfect for a quiet getaway. We were further away form Albufeira town centre than expected, but that wasnt too much of a problem as it was only 10 mins in a taxi. The apartment complex was a really nice standard - rooms were very clean, well equipped and airy. Staff at the hotel were helpful but not all that friendly! The hotel is about 10 minute walk to the lovely sandy beach and a 5 minute walk to the local square, where there are supermarkets and restaurants. All in all, highly recommeded!

good hotel, but......

We stayed at the Stella Maris hotel this year and had a lovely holiday. The hotel was in a very nice location and close to some restaurants, and a mini market. (Lovely chinese restaurant)! Hotel always seemed quiet which I liked, no hustle and bustle! The hotel was very clean, although we found the staff to be a little reserved and not very friendly and didn't exactly encourage you to seek more information. It all seemed to be 'as a matter of fact' We also got the impression that they were somewhat 'mean', everything seemed to have to be accounted for, e.g. toiletries in bathroom etc, although the linen and towels were always crisp and clean.

I felt the kitchen could have been better equipped. There were no oven dishes, no colander, no corkscrew, no cheese grater. To me these are basic items in a kitchen and I don't expect to be carrying these along with me going on a self catering holiday. A microwave would have been useful. They were also somewhat mean when it came to a supply of crockery. Everything was the minimum amount, infact we did not have enough for us initially. Only one plug in the kitchen, which meant you couldn't have the toaster and kettle on at the same time. There was an iron and ironing board in each apartment and hairdryer in bathroom, which was not great if you are fussy about your hair. I was sorry I didn't take my own hairdryer.

The breakfast looked lovely although we never sampled same. We did have buffet dinner twice, and the main courses left a lot to be desired. The soups and salads lovely, but there was only a choice of 2 mains, usually fish and either pork or beef etc. Not a lot of choice for adults, and even less when you have two children ages 13 and 10.

The pool area was lovely and not too noisy, there was also a lovely garden area where you could sunbathe away from the pool area, and maybe read or relax, either in the sun or under the trees in the shade. Very nice indeed. The apartment very nice and clean and new, and the noise level low. We never had problems sleeping. Air conditioning very good also. Our apartment was nice and cool, surrounded by pine trees and looking on to the pool in the complex next to us, which looked good and was quiet enough.

We did have a lovely holiday and have no 'big complaints'. Would go back to the area, but not to Stella Maris. It was good but not great.

I would give it 4 class status for the standards and cleanliness only.

Quiet and good place

from ptomas
Because we know very well Albufeira area, we knew what to expect – a quiet place near the beach.
It first hotel impression is really good because it’s a brand new hotel, in a very quiet place surrounded by pine trees and villas, only 500 meters away from the beach. By walking only 2 minutes you can found a supermarket, restaurants or coffee shops.
The staff was very friendly and helpful with all our requests including a bed for our 2 year son.
Regarding the apartment we had a big surprise… We booked a studio for 2 people and a child, and the studio was huge. It had main hall, a big bathroom, big kitchen and the main room with 3 different areas – sleeping, eating and resting. It had also a huge balcony with table and chairs where was possible to have meals. Kitchen was equipped for all of our needs, and two different air conditioned serve all the areas.
From what we could understand, the studio has the same space like a T1 apartment, but only without the separation from sleeping room to living room.
The apartment was on 3rd floor opposite to the main lobby, in a very quiet area and with very good sound isolation from outside. The only problem that we found was the noise coming from the above floor. Our neighbors were a little noisy and with different schedules.
The hotel had parking, but it was also possible to use the garage in the underground level without any extra cost.
The pools were great (one for children and other for adults), and with enough chairs for everyone, but some people like to reserve them in the morning and use it only in the late afternoon… The pool was served by a near bar were you can eat a small meal or drink something. You can also go into the restaurant, but we hade never tried it – 2 or 3 times a week there is a special dinner with animation near the pool.
We also liked the playground for the kids.
This is a good hotel if you want to stay in a quiet place, but not if you want to go to the big animation in Albufeira (The strip)… It’s to far way to walk, but only 15 minutes by car.

Unlike another reviewer we liked the location!

We had been going to another hotel in the Algarve but changed and are really glad we did. Lovely hotel with supersized apartments and balconies (and a kitchen bigger than mine at home) in a nice quiet location, small selection of decent restaurants a 5 mins walk away and a good supermarket (great fresh bread and croissants in the morning) too. We did take the car and park near the beach as it's a bit uphill for a small child but spectacular, fabulous golden sand. The hotel has a gym and tennis courts and a sauna (you hardly need that though!) for a couple of euros extra. If you are looking for a wild time then agreed this resort is not for you but horses for courses we liked it and our 5 year old had a great time. There is a small playground in the hotel too which was handy at the end of a day on the beach. Excellent service in the hotel although we didn't try the restaurant.

BEAUTIFUL hotel, just in the middle of nowhere

Well, first hello and welcome to my review!
Me and my fiance Paul booked this holiday after seeing the reviews and photos on the internet, it looked brilliant.
We booked our trip through a website where you book your flights, hotel room ect seperately. I would definately recommend doing this as it saves you lots of money.
Our flights were fine and we arrived at the hotel at around half 11am. On first impressions the hotel looked fab! The interior was amazing-really minimalistic with shades of turquiose blue and cream. It also had cool vases, some which contained shells, some with blue water and floating candles. We could tell that the hotel had only been built last year as everything had a brand new feel to it.
We were told that our room was ready and we had also been given an upgrade to a pool-view top-floor room as it was my birthday =)
We got into the lift with our credit-card door key and went to check out our room......only when we opened the door the place was a tip with maids in the process of clearing it up!!!
We went back down to reception and we were told that it wasnt ready (doh!) and we would have to come back in a couple of hours.
Anyways, when our room was ready we went up and spent the next couple of hours unpacking our clobber. As soon as we had got everything out, the phone was reception telling us that we had to move rooms!! I wasnt very impressed whatsoever with this and the guy on reception wasnt very apologetic which impressed me even less.
When we got into our new room, luckily it was exactly the same. It was brilliantly decorated and with a large kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and living room it was the perfect size for the two of us (see pics) The balcony was huge and had a fab view aswell. The maids are brilliant, they come every day to make the bed and change the towels. (hInt, used towels, throw on the floor)
We went out to explore that night after reading other peoples took us about 10 minutes!!!
About 5 minutes away there is a small square with about 2 restaurants and a couple of bars (which were closed)
We decided to go to Albuferia and were disgusted when we found out it cost up to 15 Euros one way, as you can guess it wasn't a cheap holiday!!!
The 'Old town' and 'The Strip' are brilliant, there are plenty of bars and nice restaurants.
The 'Strip' is very british with karaoke and pub quizzes. The old town, however is very traditional. There is lots of Portuguese peeps and music wise all they seem to play is Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtado,Shakira and the Pussycat dolls, these are their faves!!
I would recommend without a doubt, 'steak on a stone' You are given a sizzling stone and a piece of raw meat and you cook it yourselves. It's so fun.. and really tasty too *dribbling at the thought*
Other dishes you have got to try are; grilled spare ribs, swordfish, prawn and monkfish kebabs, steak Portuguese style and chicken Piri-piri.(Theres plenty of others...I could go on all day!!)
Chocolate mousse Algarvian style is to die for aswell, ive been to Portugal 27 times so I should know!!
Day-trip wise I would recommend going on a boat trip. These are very reasonable (about £20) and can last up to 7 hours. You get treated to a barbeque and numerous stops to beaches that are only accessible by boat...idyllic and very romantic too.
Slide and splash has great waterslides, very scary! Lots of waterfun!
We also went to Zoomarine. We had such a great time! On top of the price(around £20 inc transfers) you also get lots of unlimited shows. These shows include; Dolphins, Sealions, Exotic birds and birds of prey. You can also swim with dolphins for around £100-what an unforgettable experience!
They have a brilliant aquarium with great big sharks and sea turtles.
The best thing though is the 4D cinema, I won't spoil the surprise but its great. We went in 3 times
Basically, The algarve is an awesome place to stay, if you want the 'hustle and bustle' you want to stay somewhere like Albuferia/Praia da rocha. If you want some where luxurious nand quiet where you just chill out, Stella Maris is the place for you!!
Hope you have enjoyed reading my review as much as I have had writing it

Nice hotel- what a shame about the location...

from Team_Kirby_Howse
We checked out Trip Advisor before we booked which is why the utterly rubbish location of this hotel came as a massive shock.

The hotel itself is gorgous - clean and very spacious with huge apartments with A/C. The pool was clean & so long as you can beat the sunbed rush which started at 8am (by the Brits shamefully enough), it was a nice place to relax. The beach & a little shop is 5 minutes away.

However, HOLIDAYMAKERS PLEASE BEWARE. If you are planning to go anywhere of an evening, this is not the place for you - you cannot escape. Its a 15 minute drive from anywhere so take an extra e150 for taxi fares... if you can get one. There are extremely poor bus links and taxis are like hen's teeth. We ate at the square at the end of the road 4 nights out of 7 because we couldn't get out!! Thank goodness the chinese was there.

And here's the catch. The Stella Maris has teamed up with a transfer company to offer absolutely extortionate 'transfer' services to the neighbouring towns if they cant get you a regular cab. Vilamoura costs e10 in a taxi but they charge e22 and they double and triple you up with other couples so they make e44 or e66 out of you. In my personal opinion that is scandalous profiteering and the hassle to get a ride every single night really spoiled every evening - several other couples remarked the same.

I wouldn't go back here for a million pounds. I'd rather stay in a cardboard box in central Vilamoura.

Loved it

Myself husband & two children Stayed for 10 ten days in July 2007 - Hotel fab in quiet area , apartments very modern comfortable & clean and staff very friendly / helpful. Pool area lovely. would definitely recommend.

Only let down Hotel restaurant - poor service & food & non existant entertainment for kids. There is a lovely square only 5 min walk away with choice of restaurants & Bars.

Definitely reccommend hiring a car - Albuferia town around 15mins drive. Surrounding towns & beaches well worth visit.
Would definitely return but not with kids.
Couple from Ireland.

Quite and shiny

Nice, modern apartments, nice and well taken care pool, very good for families with kids. Stayed on a T1 with 2 kids (1 and 7) and was a very nice stay at a nice price.
Only downsides: no micro-wave in kitchen, toals booking pool seats.

Having been used to going further afield we have just returned from out 1st ever trip to The Algarve and were very please with the result. We booked with, also for the first time 'First Choice' and am glad we did as they were superb in everything.

This Aparthotel was a lovely size but the Apartment was massive, larger than our home and so clean with everything you would need. And,to our surprise (because we were self-catering) the towels and sheets were changed daily, amazing.

I will certainly go back to this area. The one and only downside was that,if the weather is ever poor you would need a car although the Taxis are not dear, approx 7euros into Albefiera and if you do go try the 'Sizzling Stone' and 'Wild & Co' restaurants which are next to each other on the 'Strip.

We also found a beach which was amazing, although a way out,it was called 'Saint Raphael'.
