Historical Traveller Reviews of Luna Forte da Oura Hotel

not the best place for relaxing holiday

from paulnorthants
have just returned from week stay at forte da oura having read all the reviews was confident of having relaxing week away with my partner and our 4 month old son on arrival we were placed in room at rear of hotel - view of building site very impressive -still a long way to go before it will be completed . the rooms are north facing and do not attract any sun and therefore remain cold even though weather was very good. we were moved to front of hotel after two days of complaining same room but smaller balcony. we were happier and warmer in this room but on checking out we were billed an extra 50 euros for the privilige of not looking at rubble and listening to all the noise generated on a busy building site . the hotel was mainly occupied by seniors on extended winter breaks and the entertainment obviously catered for this .the main foyer is very large and was full on the two nights entertainment was on due to the design of the hotel the noise carries to every room and at one point we actually thought everyone was outside our door !! the hotel bar put its prices up in the middle of the week -have not seen this before! mini market on site when open seemed expensive considering large super market only few minutes walk. pool very cold -only seasoned campaigners braving the water. overall not impressed with hotel allthough rooms good size and well equipped . will certainly return to albufeira great restaurants and bars and something for everyone -lovely place just wont be staying at forte da oura

Great hotel to stay at

from hutchbeast
Me and a few mates (males aged 18-25) stayed there not so long ago. Great hotel, great pool (and a smaller pool for younger kids), nice bar, Very good location for beach (few minutes walk away and this is possibly the best beach I have ever seen)and nightlife (The famous Albufeira strip of bars). This hotel did not seem to attract the yobbish types but generally a good range of people from many different nationalities such as Danish, English, Swedish etc. Highly recommendable.

I would recommend this place for families, groups of friends and couples. There's not many hotels you can say that about!

Great hotel

We spent 2 weeks at this hotel in june, and it was great. The apartment was nice, with a nice bathroom. We would definetly stay here again.

Although staff was very friendly end helpfull, they didn't manage to forward messages to us. (Someone left a message for us at the reseption which we never recieved)

The only downer was the rooster that woke us up every morning!

PS! If you're planning a day besides the pool, be early, during summertime there is a fight for the sunbeds!

Great apartments in great location

from Dufster
Hi - we stayed at the Forte Da Our apartments for 1 week in September 06. We travelled with Airtours from Edinburgh and got a good deal. We had a 1 bedroom studio which was huge considering there were 4 of us. The apartments were cleaned every day and the pool area was also spotless. The apartments are just near the top end of the strip - less than a 5 minute walk and there are loads of bars and restaurants nearby. I would recommend and would have no hesitation to book again if I were returning to Albuferia!! Hope you enjoy!!

P.S There is building work at the back of the apartments - we stayed there - so the view was like a concrete jungle, but no noise as there was no building work going on whilst we were there!!!

Booked holiday through Apollo travel stayed for only 3 nights min break 5th Oct-8th Oct, hotel was very spacious clean and even had a tortoise to greet us at reception each morning!!. The rooms were spacious and clean the beds were very comfortable. Our room overlooked the pool great view no sound of any noise as per the other reviews.

This hotel is an ideal location to the strip 5 minutes walk away and is well worth the walk everyone we met on the strip was friendly and out for a good time especially the Scottish. We recommend the Vodka's & Redbull to give you wings while your there you will need it. We expected nightlife to be quite due to the season but it was still really busy and well worth the trip. Defintley booking same time next year!!!!!!!

This hotel was a lifesaver for us for what could have turned into a nightmare holiday. We booked in January 2006 for a party of 50 for a 50th birthday to stay in the clube praia da oura complex at the end of september 2006. Upon arrival to our original hotel we were told they had no reference of our booking (!?). We had confirmation of it but supposedly the agent in portugal (seligos) hadn't confirmed we were coming so there were no rooms available. For 50 people arriving with nowhere to stay this was the ultimate nightmare!!!

For the first night we were split up into three groups in temp accomodation which were not to most people's satisfaction. One of the groups were put into the Forte da Oura hotel and were very impressed. The next day we asked if there was any availibility for the rest of us and thankfully they had 14 available apartments for which we needed nine. Lifesavers. They accepted us reserving them and staying for the first night without paying any money at all while we tried to contact the agent to get them to pay (seen as it was their fault).

I think in the long run it was good that we had this accomodation instead as nobody out of our large group had a bad word to say about it. The hotel staff were very friendly, the reception area was large and very clean and the rooms were of an excellent standard with a seperate bedroom and living area and a large balcony. The maids were in to clean and change towels every day and they left it immaculate. The pool area was a good size and food from the pool bar was reasonable and they even sold Magners! The hotel is only a quick walk to the strip and the beach too so I would say the location is ideal too.

The only things that could be classed as a negative were the building works to the back of the hotel which didn't present a very nice view although I can honestly say we never seen a workman on the site or heard any noise at all from it. A few of our party ate in the resturant one night and weren't very impressed but apart from that it is a brilliant hotel that I would have no hesitation in stopping in again or recommending to friends and family.

Great hotel great location

from emmajt81
Booked holiday through Airtours. Hotel was great, rooms very spacious especially for a studio apartment. Beds were comfortable even the pull out bed in the living room was great - there were 3 of us sharing the room. Kitchen was of a good standard, rooms were clean. Our view was fantastic - overlooked the pool and you can see the sea also. Ask for a room on the front of the hotel not the back. Building work was apparently going on when we were there but we didn't hear a single thing! Hotel itself in a great location, 4-5 minute walk from the Strip (bars & restaurants) - can't hear any noise at night. Reception guy extremely friendly and a good laugh! Pool was very nice and clean. Beach is a 5-7 minute walk, quickest route crossing the road and walking through CPO (Club Praia Da Oura)'s complex, and down onto the beach - this avoids the notorious Cardiac Hill, which is hell to walk UP - down isn't so bad but it's much easier to cut through CPO - just head towards the sea!

Only gripe with the hotel is that yes the rooms and standard of accommodation are definitely worthy of its 4 star status, but the bar, which was situated in reception (not in a separate bar area really) was tiny - with only 4 or 5 tables to sit on. And there wasn't really any I didn't rate that particular part as a 4 star. But the rest of it is great - grounds of hotel are lovely and well kept. We were 3 24 year old girls, and found there wasn't as many children in this complex, great for us, but maybe the time of year we went. We had a noisy neighbour (who were actually a family of five) but this was dealt with swiftly by reception.

All in all a great time to be had at Forte Da Oura I would stay again.

Stayed at this hotel from 24th Sept to 1st October and had a fantastic time. Do not be put off my the buiding work, i was aware of this but as we were on the front i never even saw it! Facilities were excellant, tennis courts, volleyball and a decent sized pool. We didnt have a problem with sunbeds but the hotel was not full to capacity. The staff were friendly and helpful as was the airtours rep! Room was great, the airtours brochure did not do its justice. We has 2 balocony (1 in each side) a seperate kitchen which was well equipped, bathroom and a bedroom and living area seperated by a dividing wall. Maids came everyday and he room was left spotless! Location was excellant, 5mins from the beach and the strip. We ate at the hotel and the food was nice, although there are loads of nice restarunts nearby cheaper, id give the breakfast a miss at the hotel it was xpensive! I would recommend this hotel, we are hoping to go back nxt year!

excellent location

Stayed at this hotel from 29th july to 13th august 2006.The facilities are great at the hotel for families with children and also couples. The children loved the swimming pool and also the water feature in the main foyer which had turtles swimming in it.This hotel is ideally situated for the beach which is less than 5 minutes walk across the road, also 10 minutes walk to the strip and also has a nice area around the corner for eating if you dont want to go to the strip. The bus stop to the old town is also right outside the hotel entrance and only takes 10 minutes to get there.Taxis can be flagged down on the street to take you where you want to go and are just as cheap as the bus.The rooms are a good size and are kept clean daily by the maids.I would thoroughly reccommend this hotel as we found it in an ideal location for all our holiday needs. There is building work going on around the back of the hotel but if you are not facing it it doesnt bother you at all.We would definately use this hotel in the future.

Building work vs early bird sunbed baggers!

from Grizelda1
One week before departure the tour operator sent a letter advising of building work to the back of the hotel. We were advised that it was now too late to change our booking apart from cancelling it entirely which we did not want to do as we had booked in Jan and were looking forward to the break.

When we arrived we were allocated a room at the back of the hotel looking directly on to the building site. The noise commenced at 7am and went on until around 8pm. Definitely not conducive to a good start to the holiday.

After complaining to the rep. our room was changed 1 week later, to the front of the hotel (with a partial pool view) and the smallest balcony ever! So either way, early evening drinks on the balcony was not happening on this holiday!

Apartment was spacious and very clean. Maid service 7 days per week although sometimes it could be around 5pm before your room was seen to.

If you did not set your alarm to be up when the cock crows, then you missed your window of opportunity to lay a towel down and claim your sunbeds. By 9am, all sunbeds would be taken by way of towels laid on them with some guests not arriving until after lunch to lie on them! (By the way, the rep. advises that there are not enough sunbeds for all guests as it is against Health & Safety?!)

To combat this - we either went down to the beach which is only a 5 min walk (downhill) or, lay out towels on the grass in the gardens to the side of the hotel. This area could be better utilised and save all the guests vying for sunbeds and lying head to foot like sardines!

Pool area not too big and a bit slippy underfoot around the pool side.

Cafe sold good food and pretty reasonable prices.

Bus stop just outside hotel takes you to the Old Town. Definitely a "must see". Lots of lovely eating places and bars. Only a 5 min. bus ride for 1 euro each. Taxi home is a bit more tricky as after around 11pm the queues can be enormous! If you visit the Old Town during the day, take plenty of fluids and remember you sun lotion as it gets really hot down there especially in the square.

Great eating place if you have a huge apetite - Geordie Pride. It features in the local Free Map and is only a short distance from the hotel. Serves all traditional foods. We went 1 night and to be honest, 1 plate of steak pie and trimmings could have fed 4 of us!!

If you are at the beach, try the Beach Cafe which is more to the left as you approach the beach itself by walking straight down from the hotel. Good food and prices.

Try the ice cream parlours, they are great!

The Strip is really busy at night but a bit quieter during the day - some of the restaurants don't open until 5ish. Lots of live bands on in the bars at night, some pretty good sounds.

Met some nice people there from England, Wales and Ireland. The kids met new friends and also a couple from Norway and Sweden too.

If you have a late flight and have to vacate your room in the morning, there are showering facilities by the pool. However, they are pretty spartan. No hooks to hang clothing or towels on, no locks on changing room doors, only 1 plastic chair in the shower area (2 showers) and a slection of towels which run out quickly and seem just to be dumped on the floor when they are finished with (no laundry/collection basket). To get changed, showered and dressed - all the time with guests using the WC next door - is quite a feat!!

So if you can afford it, fork out the 50 euros for keeping your room on if you can - I think it would be worth it!!

Loved the resort, room was good, building work awful, no use of balconies, pool slightly small for number of guests, not enough sunbeds and extremely "territorial"!

If you get stuck at the back of the hotel, just stand your ground, tell them your entire family will sleep on the couches in the foyer until a more suitable room at the front is found.

That's what our Irish acquaintances did and they ended up with the "Penthouse" !! here's to ya!! Enjoy your holidays!!
