Historical Traveller Reviews of Hotel Vila Gale Cerro Alagoa
Relaxing time!from packamac
The hotel itself is large, and the reception staff are friendly and helpful. They do not provide exchange facilities for money though which was a pain. We had to go to a little kiosk inside the supermarket to change our travellers cheques, but on the plus side they didn't charge commission. The hotel is approximately half way between the old and new towns, a 10-15 minute walk to each, or there is a tourist train to the new town which runs regularly until late.
Our room was lovely, with a nice view of the pool and sea (in the distance!). We had asked for a high floor, but we were on the first floor, directly above the hotel bar. This proved to be really noisy at night - up until 12.30 - 1am some nights. If you get a choice, avoid rooms 40-50 (we were in 46). Our only other criticism of our room was that there was a fridge (which was empty), but we had to pay 1.50euro's a day to use it! We didn't feel there should be a charge for this as it was there doing nothing anyway.
The pool was a good size and there was a lawned area too, with plenty of sun loungers. When you check in to this hotel you are given a polite notice which says reservation of sun loungers is forbidden. However, if your towel is not on a sun lounger by 9am, you've no chance of getting one. If you want one with a parasol, better be up with your towel by 8am!
There is also an indoor pool, but we found the humidity overbearing and staff request you wear a swimming cap to swim?!
The buffet breakfast was ok - good variety of foods. We didn't eat there at any other time of the day.
Eating out was a bit hit and miss. We knew a few places from our previous visit and recommend "Grandmothers House", "Louisiana Grill" and "Bombay Palace".
The weather was very hot during the day but we found (more during the first week of our stay) it was cold/breezy at night. We were glad we had taken jackets.
We didn't do any of the trips, we thought they were very expensive. Can arrange cheaper excursions in town.
We had a relaxing stay at the Cerro Alagoa, but think we've had enough of the Algarve for a few years now.
First Class Servicefrom Susie3386
The hotel itself was spotless and fully air conditioned and the towels were changed everday (even unused ones).
We ate breakfast there and the occasional evening meal and there was always plenty of choice. One criticism, it would've been great to be able to make my cup of tea in a pot instead of having to go backwards and forwards with a bag in a cup all the time.
The location of the hotel is on quite a busy road, but we had requested a garden facing room and this was lovely. It was a 10 minute walk to the beach, but the exercise was welcome after the amount of food we got through! We preferred the Old Town to the New (containing The Strip) as it was more sedate and picturesque. The New Town would appeal to younger folk as it is packed with bars and clubs.
All in all a brill holiday and the weather was fantastic. Oh, take sensible shoes girls as the footpaths are cobbled and can be slippy.
Visit and enjoy!

We have just spent a most enjoyable week in the Cerra Alagoa hotel in Albufeira. The hotel is in a very central location and a short walk takes you to the old town of Albufeira.A 5 minute taxi ride takes you to the more lively Strip. We had a garden view room and it was very worth upgrading-superb views.Breakfast was a big surprise absolutely brilliant. The hotel itself was beautiful and the staff very efficient and friendly.I would like to thank Monica who very kindly posted on my jewellery which I left behind. We would highly recommend this hotel and will hopefully be returning ourselves.
Fab Hotel!from Amospring
We'd actually booked with Expedia and they had not made any arrangements for my wife and myself at the hotel! Ahh!! When we arrived, the hotel staff had no idea who we were! I'd bought my booking info with me and handed it to them - they said Ahh, Expedia! They then rang them to confirm our booking details and then forwarded my wife and myself to our room within ten minutes!
It was spacious, extremely clean, well equipped for a mediterranean 4* hotel and cool - air con on! I found the mini bar and the remote controlled air con most useful! It was so hot - 38 degess C! We had a pool/garden view as requested so no probs there.
The standard room we booked had a double bed (as requested) but you can get twins too, spacious cupboard space, enough drawers to satisfy a two week stay (we only stayed for three days - ---!), cable tv with Sky news, BBC news, CBeebies, and BBC World for us Brits, mini bar, large enough balcony for two chairs and a table, remote controlled air con, tables and chairs for the room, and a spacious and clean private bathroom with shower, bidet, W.C. and deluxe marble sink. Definitely upto 4* standard. No cracked tiles or cockroaches!
Breakfast at the hotel was an easy affair. Loads to offer and loads to eat. Good selection of a full English breakfast, as well as loads of fruit, cakes, omelettes made to order, wine, champagne, and more. The breakfast did vary and there was more than enough seating for us all.
The pool was just fantastic. Enough sunbeds in the pool and garden areas and lots of room for everyone. The poolside bar is great serving drinks and snacks from 10am - 5.30pm ish! Good prices too! Double Bacardi and coke * 2 was 9 euro's! There is also an indoor pool with a jungle theme where they regularly hold aqua aerobics. The jacuzzi and gym are enough to keep people busy on their hols. I recommend the jacuzzi - very powerful!
Another good thing about the hotel is the late night room service. We were always able to order extremely late night toasties, sandwiches, crisps, chips etc etc. The hotel staff were only too happy to oblige and it costs peanuts in euro's!
Albufeira is a lovely place, relaxed in the day with most poeple hanging around the pool area enhancing their tan or on the golden sand beaches, enjoying. The Cerro Alagoa is less than a ten minute walk from the nearest beach and for those who are too lazy, there is a two hourly hotel mini van taking people to the Strip, two beaches and back to the hotel. The two near beaches are Fishermans beach - see the pics to get a realistic view of it and Oura beach which is just as lovely too. I recommed Fishermans beach when staying at the Cerro Alagoa, its got crystal clear beaches as well as water, its wide enough to get your own spot and safe from rogue traders. My wife and I had a lovely time there.
Back to the hotel, the staff are always on hand to help, they try to get you know you quickly, and always help eg phoning taxi's to get to the Strip late night when too lazt to walk. Talking of the Strip, it's safe, good for all types of music and offers a massive selection of bars, and clubs. The main club is called KISS and gets going at about 3am. Stay in the bars until then. My wife and I enjoyed Reno's bar the most so check it out!
Can't wait to go back!
loved every minute!from A TripAdvisor Member
The Cerro Alagoa was great, we e-mailed them before hand and requested a garden view as I read on a couple of previous reviews that the rooms on the main road were very noisy! And when I arrived I had been allocated a garden view! The rooms were great, ok there where a few cracked tiles in the bathroom but that didn't effect my holiday atall! We went bed and breakfast and the food was quite varied! The only draw back was for a self catering holiday there was no facilities in th e room apart from a fridge which you have to rent the key from reception for 2.5 euro's a day. The room has a TV and the bathroom has a hairdryer!
The location of the hotel was great! 2mins along the road is a massive supermarket on two floors that sell absolutley everything!
The hotel is basically inbetween the two parts of Albufiera. More closer to the Old town than the strip. If you like walking like me you can walk all the way around in about an hour. There are loads of places to eat, something to suit everyones taste! We enjoyed the Kilt and Kelt which serve SCottish Food (even IRN BRU)!
Finally being the dog lover that I am! I adopted two stray dogs while there, if you visit Albufeira, you'll no doubt come across them, they tend to stay mostly near the Modelo Supermarket and the Brisa Sol. You'll recognise them straight away, One is a large dog, sandy in colour and the other is a small black dog. They always stick together! and they scratch more that they walk! Which is why I nicknamed them Itchy and Scratchy! They are very timid and don't like to be patted (not that you would want to as they must be covered in fleas! Shame) don't try and pat the small dog as the big one will warn you off by barking his head off. Like I said before being a dog lover my heart went out for these fellows and i bought dog biscuits at the Modela supermarket everyday for them and by the end of the week I had them taking the food out of my hand!!
GO YOU'LL LOVE IT!!! VERY RELAXING!!!
Lovely weatherfrom Lizziepbe
For a 4 star hotel we were a bit disappointed with the general decoration and especially the bathroom in our room. The furniture had seen better days, the built-in wardrobe was old and our bathroom had cracked tiles and bits of black around the grouting. Having said that, the cleaning staff were lovely.
The food in the restaurant was a bit disappointing, with not much choice. However, we were out of season so it may be better in the summer months.
Having said that, we had a great holiday and loved the area. If we return to Portugal, I think we would stay in another hotel although If this hotel were to be modernised I would definitely go back there.
The cake shop at the Hotel Brisa Sol next door was a 'must visit' every day!

Went for new year, what a fantastic hotel had everything!!from A TripAdvisor Member
Good facilities, poor roomfrom A TripAdvisor Member
Now the bad parts - we had a junior suite and as mentioned in a previous review we found the quality poor. It was clean but very basic and the kitchen units and cooker have seen better days!! The windows let in the rain and there was a slight leak in the roof of the corridor, thankfully it only rained one day!! The balcony (if you can call it that) was tiny and had the picturesque view of the bottle bank and main road. We asked if we could change to a pool view on the first day but were told those rooms were being refurbished, but never saw any evidence of this. The reception staff did not want to know if something went wrong, we had obtained a 25% discount for an extra night from the hotel via email but on arrival they refused to accept this and hinted that we may be lying, unfortunatley for them we went to an internet cafe and printed off a copy of the email so they then had to agree, begrudgingly to the discount and surprise, surprise only then found their copy of the email. Also on one night a live band was playing in the carpark opposite and though the hotel didn't have any control over this, it would have been nice to have been pre warned.
We went here through RCI, who we have used on a number of occasions and have always had excellent service and quality. Not in this case. The hotel is not a total loss, if you are going there insist beforehand in a room with a pool view not the bottlebank as this gets emptied about 5am most mornings. Avoid the junior suites.
