Exellent hotel in a superb position ,The staff were most helpfull and there was entertainment every night or a piano playier who was most accomodating the rooms were clean and of a good size and the breakfast was good.The locationh of the hotel could not be bettered being on the beach front and also wth direct access to the town all in all superb

We stayed at the Sol E Mar in October and what can I say? The best holiday we have ever had. The hotel is fantastic and the location, on the beach, is just breathtaking. Waking up to that view every morning and going to sleep to the sound of the sea every night was just amazing. The hotel itself is absolutely spotless. The staff are warm and very friendly and the food was the finest we have tasted. Ian wanted to bring the chef home with him. Excellent value for money. We would definitely love to go back year after year. The resort of Old Town Albufeira is beautiful. Loads of bars, restaurants, and great friendly people.

Loved it !!!! Ten out of ten.

We stayed in March so the beech was too cold, but we knew that before we went, The hotel exterior was very shabby, the concrete above our veranda was falling off, there were no mats around the bed and at that time of year the marble floors are very cold, the curtains were hanging off the rails, the bathroom mirror had 2 inch of silver missing from the bottom, The whole room was very shabby but clean, The breakfast food was of the cheapest quality, you would expect to get fresh orange from a country that grows them but they serve cordial, the tea and coffee was a disgrace, luckily there are numerous restaurants close by to eat out in. The hotel lounge area has school type stacking chairs to relax in. We were booked in for 7 nights but only stayed two, we found another hotel and moved out. How do these hotels get a star rating. The hotel wants pulling down and rebuilding to a modern standard, DON'T GO THERE.

Beautiful, Clean and Close to eveything

The Sol E Mar Hotel was not only in the most beautiful beach, but our view from our balcony was all beach and ocean. We could have stayed forever. We travelled with 3 teenage boys who loved every minute of it.

myself and my husband were really impressed with the hotel, and the area. i was on crutches at the time, so was restricted to where i could go. but everything is at hand. daytime we had the great sandy beach, sunbeds, and cafes with good food 50yds approx away from the beach, and at night approx 100yds away were the shops, resturants, bars, which i managed to walk to. we had a fantastic time. but the other great thing was going back to the hotel at night to bed, and all you could hear as you were going to sleep, was the noise of the sea which was very relaxing. the hotel was spotless, and the food was exellent, and everyone was very friendly. we are now saving to go back there. one of the best holidays we have had ..

My wife and I have just returned from a week long stay in Albufeira and found the hotel Sol-e-Mar to be perfectly located for both the old town and the very nice beach. The hotel is comfortable and we both found the food to be above average. The self service idea is one that we both favour and apart from one or two slight niggles regarding re-stocking certain choices I have nothing bad to say.
We did not try the air conditioning, the TV has the usual foreign channels, the only one in English is the CNN news channel. The fridge only works whilst you are in the room providing you place the door key in a socket that somehow completes the circuit for all the electric outputs within the room. To use the room safe you have to hire a barrel lock with key @ 12.5 Euros per week from the reception.
We did not like the two single beds and would have preferred a double bed. The mattresses on the beds were heavily soiled and really need changing.
Although the old town is very nice and has no shortage of places to eat, we found the ongoing building work too extensive to ignore, not so much for the noise but the visual impact is very intrusive. These works have been going on for some time and I would estimate that they will take at least 12-18 months to complete.
Overall, we did enjoy our stay at the hotel apart from the morning of departure when we were treated quite poorly by the night porter due to his difficulty in securing a taxi to transport us to the pick up point further up the road. For some reason he took exception to us having cases. I don't know what he expected holidaymakers to have other than suitcases, but he was very offhand and seemed determined to vent his frustrations on us.
Apart from this the remainder of the staff were very courteous and spoke quite reasonable English.

We're just back, having stayed for a week on half board...the location's just perfect, on the beach and a short distance from all the shops, the Square etc..however, lots of roadwork being done locally and the Square's disappeared!! Supposed to be finished by April 2006, though I'd be suprised if it is done by that time. Anyway, the hotel!! I've read comments about the food but we found it fine and were never hungry, though it's not restaurant quality, but neither are the prices. All staff just great and friendly and fairly laid back. We reckon it's probably best for over 40's, looking for a quietish time and easy chat with fellow guests..prices good and location outstanding. Renting a car? Well, parking always a problem in Albufeira so be prepared to circle and walk to the hotel. Rooms ok, though bathroom showers a bit outdated. Weather was mixed when we were there so be prepared to hear the sea 24 hours a day! Internet access available at 5 euros per hour. Good food available on ground floor and plenty local restaurants. Recommended!!!

The view from our room was quite outstanding,the blue-green sea stretching away to North Africa. We found the staff attentive,courteous and helpful. Location is unbeatable,with the pedestrianised square less than a minute away. There are many good retaurants nearby.Lots of live music - check out Johnny O'Sullivan at the Steps Bar and Mario Miguel at the Vegas Bar.Needless to say we are going back to Sol e Mar this summer.

Fantastic location with breathtaking views

The hotel was built in the 60's but has been upgraded over the years, and still retails the beautiful old 60's style bar. It's location is excellent with all rooms overlooking the sea, giving breathtaking views over the sea at dawn & dusk.
The room was a good size was was well maintained. It was very clean and comfortable.
Entertainment was good with a keyboard player every night and 3-4 shows a week.
as far as food was concerned, breakfast was fine, with a good choice and something for every taste. Evening meals were however only average with a good salad selection, but a poor hot meal selection with only one choice of meat and one choice of hot vegetables. The sweet menu was very poor with little choice and no ice cream.
Generally we were very comfortable here and would stay again.
The only note of caution we would offer is regarding the streets of Old Town which are currently undergoing major sewerage upgrades, causing much disruption in the Old Town. This looks as though it will go on well into next year.

The rooms were clean with ample balconies and wonderful views of the beach. Albufeira town is very easily accessible (and I HATE walking!) from the reception level and/or via the beach-level tunnel.
The staff were very friendly and helpful and even allowed us a late check-out as our flight wasn't until late evening.
As others have mentioned, it was a pity about the breakfast: cold eggs, bacon etc if you weren't there at 8am! Coffee from a machine and no fresh fruit or juice. It seems not a long way to go to improve this aspect. The hotel has ample staff and facilities, after all and fresh coffee and hot food would make such a difference.
The evening menu looked tempting but we decided not to risk it. Huge numbers of restaurants in the town only 2 mins away.
Hotel "entertainment" was of the "Hi de Hi" variety, but plenty going on in town
We would definitely return.

Would stay at this hotel again. The location was fantastic, beautiful views of the sea and beach. Lovely size rooms. Wish we had more of variety of food at the hotel in the evening, but what we did have was nice. Its definately a place for couples or mature families. Very very good holiday indeed.

we stayed at the sol e mar for new year 2005 what a wonderful experience.we were treated to a gala dinner with 7 courses that carried on all through the night until breakfast. all drinks all night were included the fireworks at midnight were wonderful as was the concert on the beach just 50yards along the beach.nelly furtado was in concert massive event all free.the staff were very helpful and kind.the views from your balcony were truly breathtaking. it is quite steep and cobbly on the streets outside but its very pretty and very old world looking car hire is very good rates from the hotel reception not your holidayrep. would reccommend this holiday. we are in the 45 to 49 age group.hope you enjoy it as we did very relaxing or as bustling as you wish.

Top Local Tips for Albufeira

Guide to Old town near Sol e Mar use Rocamar and St vincent hotels, small very friendly staff. Eat at AL Face [along from Rocamar] near viewpoint pier, freshly cooked food, very friendly owner, if not busy he will give you wine tips and history of Portugal etc. Beware of touts in main square, watch your footing in the streets, steep hills and lots of dog excretia and very keen painters using scrapers and whitewash on most of the buildings. Very narrow old roads in a twisting one way system in old town but cars travel at very modern speeds. Dao wine from supermarket only E3.49 and port under E5, head towards new harbour on Sir Cliff Richard Rua [not a wind up honestly!!] opposite cemetary.

Great Use the quirky train to get all around the town for 3 euros

Ticket sellers Beware those ticket sellers offering major prizes. You are more likely to get caught out on the first day of arrival like our selves. Unless you are genuinely interested in time shares or something simiilar and want to give up three hours of your holiday then politely refuse to accept the ticket or scratch card - there is no such thing as a "free gift"
